I expect the Wallabies to progress to the QF. A loss in a QF would confirm their current status according to World Rankings.
Making the SF would meet my highest expectations.
Making the final would exceed all expectations while winning the final is just not a realistic outcome.
Not getting out of the pool stages would be a failure.

Yes but if she said making the QF is a pass there'd be people accusing her of accepting mediocrity. Not many on here, moreso the instant experts who appear roughly every four years then mostly disappear for the next 3.9 (also fucktards like AJones).

True. I get that she's got to talk it up for all the "RWC band wagon" supporters that only turn on the rugby every four years, but it's frustrating because she's on the kool-aid.

I'd be comfortable with us exiting in the semis.
Would either of you really see us losing in a QF as being a pass mark? I agree that's where we sit in the World Rankings but I also think it will be a disappointing result if we lose then.
We'll presumably start as slight underdogs in our pool match against Wales. I think it will be very close to even money. Win that and top the pool and we would presumably play France or Argentina in a quarter final (assuming England top that pool) and would start as comfortable favourite against either of those teams. We would clearly go in as underdog against England if we face them in a quarter final.
I reckon Castle would be copping a pasting from exactly the same people if she'd suggested that our expectations are to go out in the quarter finals and that making the semi-final would be a significant achievement.

I'd consider not getting to quarters an abject failure, getting through quarters a struggle, maybe a C+, and solid pass for getting to a Semi and being knocked out.
You're not wrong - as I said just above, I understand Raelene has to pander to the masses, and talk it up. I just get a little tired of the sizzle but no steak.

Pragmatically I think a semi final loss and third place result would be par for the Wallabies. To win a semi is achievable but not supported by form over the last few seasons. To win the final would be a fucking Headingly.

BH the way I see it is that on form over the past 4 years, we should only have an expectation of reaching, not winning, a QF. How we get there and who the opponent is will have a big bearing on the chances of winning the QF, but if we make a SF then that is where, long term, I see the Wallabies in the overall pecking order, ie a top 4 nation. The truth is, though, that this Wallabies side hasn't been a top 4 nation for quite a while, so while attaining that end would meet my highest expectations, I certainly don't think they have the form to suggest they will be successful beyond the QF stage.
I do have hopes of them exceeding my expectations, but in light of the talent coming through now more confidence in them being more successful over the next RWC cycle than they are likely to be in this Cup.

I feel like we have to be favoured to win our pool. We've had the wood on Wales for a long time. Their win last year was more about us losing than anything they ever did. If we do top the pool, it's probably France or the Argies. Reckon we should be favoured in those too. Don't fancy our chances against England, South Africa or NZ in knovk out rugby. But you never know.

We have a lot of rugby to play, in a format that only occurs every 4 years.
Plenty of pressure on the teams expected to win/reach the final. Anything can happen.
Huge games coming up - I'll enjoy every one and hope for wins in all of them. We have the potential to Bring Back Bill.
Sadness, recriminations, retirements, and sackings are all in the furthest recesses of my mind.
