One thing we have in our favour compared to the soccer is that Super Rugby is as high a quality competition as there is in the rugby world. Sometimes.

Whereas local soccer is four or five levels below the EPL et al.

Reds v Force was not high quality.

I do get your point though, potentially the Super Rugby is an awesome comp, the issue is that the Aussie derbies are generally below the standards of other games.

I wonder if there is some way of having an "Aussie bonus point" that the ARU runs to try to add to the local derbies. We would need some prize worth playing for that is awarded at the yearly ARU awards

The problem with our teams is the skill levels.

Better skill levels = fewer errors = fewer stoppages = better rugby from every point of view.

That - and we also play our first round of derbies at the start of the year when it's hot, humid and fitness levels are lower.

Back to earth with a bump this week after a couple of good Friday nights. Punters don't like the late starts out West very much

Force v Brumbies 38k
Blues v Hurricanes 53k

Highlanders v Lions 38k
Rebels v Reds 55k
Sunwolves v Cheetas 34k

For comparison sake, NRL had a total of 800k across their 3 Saturday games on Foxtel.

Ouch. Not good for an all Aussie game on prime time.

Rebs v Reds was up against NQ cowboys v Parra. At my Brisbane pub it was 11 screens on the league v 1 for union

With respect, I don't buy that excuse any more that the northern hemisphere "it rains" excuse.

It rains a helluva lot in New Zealand, but all their teams are full of high skill, high intensity skills.

Work hard at the skills in hot humid conditions and one will be much more equipped to execute them in games.

Quick comparison with last year - though obviously it's not apples v apples (start dates, new teams, games included in ratings etc)

Up to Round 5 2016 - Ave 62, 2 games > 100, max 149
Up to Round 5 2015 - Ave 72, 4 games > 100, max 122

and where we were not so long ago
Up to Round 5 2012 - Ave 91, 7 games > 100, max 193

I think a big factor is the number of rounds before the NRL starts. This year there was only 1. I think that skews the figures a fair bit.

Super Rugby had a strong run when the Reds were doing well and playing spectacular rugby. That was the last time a team really captured significant bandwagon support and a lot of neutrals who liked the way they played. The Tahs under Cheika didn't quite get to the same point.

Thats sobering and if it follows last years pattern the average will continue to fall.

So hard to get media coverage its like the AFL and NRL are the only two sports in Australia.

That's because the AFL and NRL are both far more popular than our game by any metric you care to use.

That is why they get media coverage.

They are both simple to understand and frankly far more appealing to the casual viewer.
