Rugby News from unexpected places

28-8 Penalty count, nothing else needs to be said. Plus then the 3 Refs were Romanian, appointed by a Romanian, who knocked back a request to change the ref a month ago from Spain, the same guy who recently purchased the WC rights for Romanian television. That's as funny as it comes.

I'd be leaning towards null and voiding the result, replaying the match it is the only way to fairly play this out

Sounds like they have all the credentials to fit right in with Clyne, clarke and north. RA sign them up now.

That's seriously impressive you managed to bring that up, 10/10, would tangent again.

Just putting it into perspective for you, a mirror you might say.
It's a bit arrogant to be criticising and laughing at the Romanians after the carry on by the RA clowns last year, which was all highlighted in the Senate enquiry, have a read.
What do you mean by "would tangent again", showing off your engineering speak?

And now we have another twist in this tale. Apparently Romania have used an ineligible player during this qualification cycle which means they could be docked the points from the game or games he was used. Meaning Spain could in fact be Japan bound.

And also that Belgium fielded an ineligible player in their match against Germany. Same guy was originally named to play against Spain as well, but ended up being replaced before the game. It's amateur hour at Rugby Europe!

Question is whether Belgium only get disqualified for the match against Germany or if they get disqualified from the entire qualification tournament. If the latter then Spain would go through too. You'd think it would probably just be for the Germany match, but maybe not if they decide it's unfair for one team to get a forfeit victory, i.e. automatic points, in such a crucial tournament. WR (World Rugby) could use that to justify Lance Armstronging Belgium out of the standings altogether.

Obviously wouldn't make a difference if Romania had been playing the whole time with an ineligible player as well. Only that in addition to Spain qualifying Russia would go through to the playoff against Samoa (presuming they beat Portugal).

What seems clear out of this is that World Rugby has to take a bigger role overseeing RWC qualification once it gets up to the final stages.

Rugby Europe (and the various other bodies around the world) might be right to manage it when it is every country in the region is playing and almost all of them won't qualify but once it gets down to the business end and there is more at stake there has to be better oversight to avoid future embarrassment like this.

Would it be fair to assume that all these odds and ends have only come to light because of the consequences of qualification? If this is par for the course for Rugby Europe they need a major shakeup, I don't think World Rugby taking a bigger role, I'm thinking more World Rugby kicking some arse so that Rugby Europe can competently do it themselves, all the time, not only for RWC qualifications.

I don't think it will ever be much different. Most of these unions outside of the ones close to RWC qualifying would run with the budget and professionalism of a subbies club.

Belgium, Romania and Spain could all be disqualified for RWC due to fielding ineligible players.

And the Steven Bradbury in all of this could be down to Germany or Russia!

Imagine being a club player from Germany and getting the call up to Japan!?

Just read an article on Americas Rugby News and from what they've attained at least one of the Spanish pair is fine but the other is less clear. The Spanish Union seems confident that there is no issue and it hinges on whether the French fulfilled their duty of informing the player that his participation in 2011 essentially locked in his eligibility as the French moved from using their 'A' squad as their next senior squad to their U20s team.

Jesus Christ.

I've read that Spain approached WR (World Rugby) to get approval for their player when he was first selected. What if Romania did as well, and both were given the green light incorrectly?

What a nightmare. Maybe they should just have some new set of matches between Romania, Spain and Russia in June.

That would mean changing the timetable on a whole host of other qualifiers.

The window to correct things with no changes is gone. Spain were already scheduled for a playoff against Portugal on 4th of April.

To only impact that match they'd need to resolve it prior to 2nd of June when the winner of that playoff is scheduled to face Samoa in the first leg of that series.

It's a complete clusterfuck.

Good points. Then I guess the worst case scenario is that Romania, Spain and Belgium all get disqualified, Russia qualify and Germany and Portugal playoff to see who gets to be destroyed by Samoa.

Japan vs Russia to open the tournament is pretty sellable, and Russia is at least roughly the same level as Romania and Spain. But there's a big drop off after them so hopefully they don't have their own issues!

That said, Spain might turn out to be fine. The case against Romania seems more cut and dried but who knows, they might have an ace up their sleeve too if it turns out WR (World Rugby) gave them the all clear incorrectly.

Why is it that as soon as a person becomes involved in rugby administration that person instantly becomes unable to organize a piss up in a brewery?

Looking forward to European Rugby appointing respected rugby administrator Vladamir Ruski from the Russian Federation to decide whether Romania, Spain and Portugal should be disqualified

Can somebody tell me why Portugal are still in the equation? They play in what is seemingly Tier B on the European Rugby Championships. Surely, as the winner of that, they would be the 7th best (non-tier On) team (behind Romania, Russia, Georgia, Spain, Germany & Belgium)....
