I always find it difficult at this time of year to locate and purchase the right boots etc for my kids.
The big name shops have a limited range most of which is for soccer or league or afl - I am a firm believer in aluminium studs for forwards.
I thought it might be helpful to start an equipment thread where people could share their questions, advice and recommendations.
I have taken to buying my kids' boots online from a site that I think is based on the US. But I have bought from others and I can recommend these guys: JMSRugby - I went to their shop in January and they have been very helpful with follow up.

Is this boot legal?

I thought the boot stud themselves had to be either all metal or all plastic. Not a combination of both. The metal and plastic can separate over time and cause a sharp edge.
This is only from a referee telling me that a few years ago.
Is there a current ref who can clarify?

Combination metal and plastic studs, similar to the photo are very common over here.
In my years of coaching and playing, it has only been the plastic studs that I have seen get sharp edges.

I wore boots similar throughout school. I was never told any different by any ref, nor when I did the refs course myself. As long as the sprigs are replaced when they sharpen. If it is concerning, replacement sprigs are probably easier to find.

My concern is with the single stud on the toe.
This was banned in the 80's because it was considered a weapon in rucks.

I couldn't find anything in the regs to say they remain illegal and I doubt adidas would spend the time and money developing them if they were.

This is the way the current predators and f50's work - which is different: wonder what is behind the change.

As you can see I really am a boot tragic!

First rule - Black boots

no other colour should be allowed for a forward (or back) they just look like stomping targets to me (as was any bandage showing in the good old days)
Ankle high 10 stud units for tight forwards
The rest, who cares
Changa agrees - they do seem to be making a comeback.
I notice Pocock has not branding at all on his completely black boots: whats the inside story on that?

In an era of tailor-made fluorescent boots, Pocock chooses to ignore six-figure sponsorship deals, instead painting over the logo of his boots.

His brand, Heroes Boots, will be releasing rugby balls in two months, with the ethically produced boots to follow later.

Pocock must be the only athlete who can be ranked among the top five players of a global sport not to have such an endorsement deal.

"What sort of living and working conditions do those who make the boots have?" wonders the Western Force captain, who faces the Waratahs tonight in Sydney.

"As consumers in a country like Australia, we often feel powerless to issues happening in other parts of the world. But we don't realise the powers we have being consumers. You can really vote with your dollar.

"If you buy things, companies will make them. But if you stop buying things - like chocolate that isn't fair trade - companies are going to move toward practices that help everyone benefits from the production, like the farmers and workers.

Not sure there is a law on this, but definitely a guideline. Stuff like these are legal, even though they appear to be both plastic and metal.

These are the same deal as the first lot in post #6 - the sole includes the base of the stud and the stud then locks (in this case) into the sole

I'd like to see referees do a shoulder pad inspection more regularly.
That way all those kids wearing (illegal) league pads (weapons) would be forced to comply with the law.

I've already bought boots for QH jnr. I'll definitely give some of these websites a look for next year though.

Wonder if Pocock will set a trend to the return of black boots. QHJ and friends wouldn't be seen dead in them. I don't think 1 boy in his team has worn black boots in the last 2 seasons at least.

Offspring #1 reluctantly went to white boots this season because Dan Carter is wearing them.
