This will be the seventh Rugby 7's World Cup (but only the third to have both men's and women's competitions) and the first to be played under a knockout format. Previous winners were:

1993 in Edinburgh: England
1997 in Hong Kong: Fiji
2001 in Mar del Plata: New Zealand
2005 in Hong Kong: Fiji
2009 in Dubai: men's Wales, women's Australia
2013 in Moscow: men's New Zealand, women's New Zealand

World Rugby have produced these nifty flowcharts to show how it all works. The observant will note that barring an upset in the men's qualifying round Australia and New Zealand will meet in the Round of 16.

Yup. Aussies play Spain at 10:52am east coast time. They’ve troubled us in the past so it will be tough.

^^^^^^ NZ play Ireland immediately prior & after what happened to England I'm a little nervous. Luckily tournament is on FTA & the Duty Manager, top bloke that I am, has changed channels from the endless reno & "flipping" shows on Home & Garden TV for the day. Even better I can see the screen from my desk. Life is good sometimes.

^^^^^^^^ yeah I know you guys hate losing to kiwis almost as much as we like beating Aussies but losing to France is a pretty fucked-up avoidance tactic......

USA pushed us all the way but NZ prevail 26-21, Portia Woodman with the match-winner, her 17th in RWC7's: the next-highest on the list each have nine.

Two YC in four minutes, ain't gunna beat too many teams with six v seven. World Championship defence hanging by a thread here.

Make that three in six minutes. Fuck that's gunna hurt in the second half.

Time up in the first half, France up 7-0, they win a lineout against the throw in our half & they kick it out! Coulda nailed us right there had they gone up 12- or 14-0.

So the blitzwobs and wobblettes get frogmarched out of the cup.

It's back to the drawing board
