That does look a lot like sugar coating it though.

2010 we thumped the Cheetahs and lost by 2 in the last minutes to the Sharks on the African tour.

2010's close opening home loss to the Tahs which is similar to this year's Crusaders loss. But difference is in 2010 we turned around and pumped the Crusaders the next week, whereas this year we copped a flogging.

Call it sugar coating then. The point was that you can pick similarities and differences between what became a building season and this one. It's a long season and it's premature to be writing the Reds off after two home games and their Africa/Americas tour.

2010 was seen as a successful year because we ended up in 5th, 3 competition points from a playoff spot. You talk about a close loss to the Tahs and most people remember that one but what a lot of people forget is that an 81st minute conversion in the last Reds game of the regular season was the difference between us finishing 5th or 8th of 14 teams for the season. Could've been a lot different.

Interesting team, I kind of like it. Stiles ain't dying wondering.

Two wingers on the bench is a bit odd, but as we previously talked about I guess Maranta is fullback cover with DP covering 10 and Hunt 12.

Smart move by Stiles

Some selections based on need, being Slipper and Quade. Both huge.

Argies are expected to win anyway. Why not make some other changes and see if it works.

There is absolutely no downside (from Stiles perspective) to these changes.

On another note some time ago I said that Thor would replace Tak. about round 4 or 5 (I think) as the starting THP. He has been a bit of a disappointment so far and looks like he has a long way to go. He needs to run more and do some work around the field, not just wait for opportunities to shine to make the highlight reels. Also his scrimmaging is coming along slower than I anticipated.

How slimmed down is Leroy? Enough that it makes sense to play a true 6 at 8 & an 8 at 6?

Chucking Tuttle and McIntyre in a trial by fire over in Argentina for their first run on together seems an odd move to me. Although I give some leniency due to the Quade suspension.

I love the Reds and will continue to support them this season, but I'm predicting a fair flogging here, again. Ugh.

They are in the squad - They are getting well paid.

They will relish the opportunity. Its not about throwing them into the fire.

They play well and their careers are enhanced. No different to any other guys breaking seriously into Super Rugby (from any team)

I think he's been going ok. I think the reason he's looking a bit lacklustre in some peoples eyes is that he isn't trying to play 'highlights reel' rugby. Stiles has him playing tighter than he generally would and he also made it clear that the wider channel hole running stuff should be his last priority.

His scrummaging was never going to be top notch (he's only 20) but everyone still expected him to be making the big busts out in the midfield and he hasn't been because I expect he's been told to play tighter. If he was making big runs out wide people would probably overlook the 20 year old scrummaging ability.

Just a thought.

he came to everyone's attention with those bullocking runs. Maybe, just maybe he will only be average playing in tight.

Workload will be the Thors biggest hurdle

OK fine. But Jake has not exactly not had previous opportunity. (Happy for Tuttle, but why now?) Look, I'm hoping for the best, doing what I can to give Jake the benefit of the doubt. But I dont at all mind admitting the trepidation it gives me.

OK Jake, prove me wrong bloke. I will be like a pig in mud if you smear my face with egg.

Jake has had a fair crack at 10, all last year. He was just not up to Super rugby standard. ANYONE who disputes that opinion really has no idea about rugby at all. (when the lad first got promoted I genuinely thought he had all the skills to be an excellent 10 at this level - he certainly made me rethink that opinion)

I really hope he is much better. Great to see Tuttle get a tilt at run on - Pickle hasn't set the house on fire so far this year so fair enough.

Maybe the Tuttle / McIntyre combination will be good, possibly better than the Pickle/Cooper one. Time will tell

Looking for some extra enthusiasm, particularly from the new starters and the Reds to win narrowly
