Round 4 - Festival of Hate - Qld v NSW

Scoey

That was a really shit game of footy. Reds were poor and Tahs not much better. The pitch negated our one main advantage. Jackson is just a rubbish referee. Not sure what the ARs were doing either but the offside from both teams was atrocious. Back to Jackson but, he is so hit and miss. Won’t make a call when the pressure is on but happy to call BPA for not hooking when he clearly does. Or hand the Tahs 3 points for Wright being offside at a ruck that never even can close to forming.
A large part of what made that game shit was the commentary. I simply can’t stand Clarke. He’s a broken record of cliches and doesn’t not add anything to the game. When he does try actually calling play he’s often wrong. But worst of all is Kearns. He is poison. I have no idea whatsoever what FoxSports think he is adding for their customers.

My last gripe though, did anyone else see in that last ruck when Folau got cleaned out and then came back and hit ASY (Angus Scott-Young) in the head with a no arms clean out? Hope he gets cited but I doubt he will.

Sorry for the rant, just had to get that off my chest.

Mate, the only positive thing about Jackson is he's equally shit for both teams. He penalised Will Miller for no clear release despite the fact as the tackler Miller never got close to the pilfer and had well and truly cleared the ruck by the time he was penalised. I often find myself wondering if I'm watching a different game than he is. All over the shop. He has far too much of an influence on how a game is played. Which generally aren't all that flowing. Strange thing is, the Kiwi's rate him and this essentially ensures he won't be sent to the scrap heap where he belongs.

I would like to say I was disappointed, but it was an expected result.

Both teams look ordinary, Reds will end season below the Sunwolves and the Tahs will be in a scrap to beat them too.

Reds play like a U7's soccer team, crowding each other and running where the ball is without thinking about spreading out an offensive line.

When is the "worlds best kicking coach" going to improve the Reds kicking.....or Thorn have the guts to tell his team not to kick as they lack the skills required? I always hate to quote Allan Jones but I believe he once said you cant score tries without the ball in your hands.

Hold onto the ball!!!

The field was shithouse, what would happen if the referee said is was unfit to play? When the Reds were penalised for collapsing the front row Kerevi should have approached the referee to say the ground was not up to scratch. (not to stop the game) This may make the referee have some pity for the reds and stop blowing the whistle.

I cant see the Reds improving, what talent can we add to improve? I cant see too much for the Tahs either.

Lets hope that the Rebels and Brumbies can provide Wallaby standard players for the world cup because on form not too many Reds or Tahs deserve selection.

That Miller penalty was odd, as he had landed a metre away. We wondered whether it was Hooper as the tackle support who he was penalising for no clear release rather than Miller.

nice to see the win. was expecting a typical arm wrestle derby, did not disappoint.

Some observations from a fan returning from a self imposed rugby viewing ban:
1. Reds basic rugby fundamentals are at a very low standard. Aside from the handling errors, there was several rucks I saw where the only players from QLD who made it to the contest were backs despite the breakdown being in the middle of the field. We also have no kicking threat to our offense and our catch pass looks poor.
2. We seemingly lack leadership from players who can see the bigger picture. We also have no players who look up and search for the space on the field.
3. No creativity in attack. If runners don't straighten or at least look forward momentarily it makes the defenders job pretty easy. The old shovel it on strategy is also easy to defend against.
4. Lack of urgency. With 10 minutes to go and 12 points down you would expect players to be sprinting to the next play, not so apparently.

The Miller penalty was odd. The only thing I could think of at the time was that he didn’t roll away quick enough denying the tackles player an opportunity to set the ball back but still, it was a weird one to blow up.

On point 2, i don’t think there’s a lack of leadership, perhaps leadership isn’t instilled in the right person though.. Samu Kerevi is a leader but in terms of captaincy, I think Izack Rodda is the natural choice. He is the forwards captain at least

At least Kearns called out or at least questioned some of Jackson’s calls. Clark sits on a fence 24/7 and the worst part of all is how Clark just lists off stats and expects that to come across as good commentary. It’s so inauthentic it sucks.

Went with a Sydney mate to Suncorp Stadium last weekend, he couldn't stop commenting on how close we were to the pitch despite having shit tickets. I could help but say to him, yeah its pretty good but its been the standard expected n Brisbane for almost 20 years now.
The old SFS is being rebuilt so SCG is temporary venue. It's a cricket ground ffs, there was never a bad seat at Allianze Stadium either

Pretty disappointing game. I think the reds just had a really off night however they still managed to score 3 tries and be in it. How quickly we forget their first 2 performances, particularly the first one.

I think a big thing people overlook is that unfortunately the Reds are coming from years and years of losing culture. You can't just turn that around overnight. Anyone who had been involved with a team or club which has gone through this knows how hard it is mentally to change it around. From the outside looking in it looks like this is something they are really struggling with.

Hegarty proved tonight he isn't a 10, I do like him at 15 though. The Reds need to stick with Stewart at 10 and let him develop or sink and fall on their sword. Lucas had a very good starting debut... seems to have all the toughness of his brothers. CFS back on the up again as well.

Tahs forwards really stepped up. They must have read all the press about the reds having a better pack. Credit where credit is due, Hanigan had a good game particularly in the 1st half. I've always liked AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) however he does look to be a couple steps behind. Think tonight's backline with Rona to 13 and Newscombe to the wing will be their best starting backline.

The refereeing at the ruck and offside line tonight was terrible. Really shocking. I hope these guys get some sort of review after a performance like that.

Congrats on the win Tahs

No, D Wessels is doing that in Melbourne - its easy. It starts with good coaching . It's not a generational thing. It really can happen over night.

Rubbish.

Trying their asses out would mean they put in the extras at training in order to be able to deliver on the field.

If you think they are well prepared for a super rugby match then you are kidding yourself.

Thorn and co not cutting it for them? Well pick up the ball after training and practice your kicks, throws and passes ffs.

How do you know they aren't doing extras at training? In fact if you had a clue about the culture thorn is trying to instill in this group you would know that this is exactly what he is big on. Over the last couple of years the players have volunteered for extras, including contact work. You really dont have a clue what you are talking about and I think your comments reek of someone who cannot separate his emotions from a sporting teams performance. I saw a bunch of guys in maroon out there tonight busting their gut to try and make something happen. It didn't. The gameplan isn't right and their structures arent great but I cannot fault their heart. To suggest otherwise is just plain incorrect as others have suggested here.
