My thoughts -

- Tahs defence was atrocious. Sliding defence may work in the future again, but it doesn't work here and now. They did well to score 5 tries

- I've been saying it since last year, but you should get either half a point or a whole point for scoring 4+ tries alongside the 3 tries more than your opponent.

- How tf was Jantjies not carded for whacking (albeit unintentionally) Reece Robinson in the head? would have made the score 33-29 after 48 mins (IIRC)

Tah fans relax. Yes a bad result, but a bad result:

Away
At altitude
In the absence of your usual starting halves
With late late personnel changes
Against a cracking team

Gear up for the Sharks. Be patient. Show up in force at your next home game.

As a Tahs supporter I'm not particularly concerned with this result. The late withdrawals of Phipps and Skelton certainly didn't help when we're already down Foley, Holloway and Hanigan. Joburg is a massive home advantage, as are Pretoria and Blomfontein.

This backline isn't gelling in either attack or defence and Izzy is wasted. The forward pack need to spend some time with the referees so they understand the ruck and maul interpretations. 12. Simone 13. Horne 14. Kellaway 15. Folau.

As a Wallabies supporter I think it's telling that we are in round 2 and there are no undefeated Aus teams. That's not the fault of the players, there just isn't the depth in Aussie rugby for 5 competitive franchises.
But I don't think the answer to improve rugby is having less professional sides as long term will only shrink rugby further at grass roots level. Sort out why we don't have quality of players to compete and in fairness we are behind nz and who isn't as generally we are on par with saffa sides who have huge playing base.

Agreed. Ultimately we'd like our own domestic pro comp with 14 or so teams that would keep the 100+ players at home instead of having to go overseas to facilitate their desire to earn an income playing rugby.

It's a two edged sword though, 5 faltering teams isn't likely to increase the supporter base, but 4 teams that can give all the other sides a run for their money and all be genuine finals contenders might. I'm not saying that would be the outcome, it's the alternative argument though.

Anyway, it's not really relevant to this thread so I'll shut up now and go look for the many threads that it is relevant to!

No question that the Lions were the better team but: the referee seemed to decide that sacking the lineout before the maul got started was also a penalty infringement. If that ruling becomes widespread, then every team is going to use penalties, especially at altitude, to kick inside the 22, set their maul and realign their pod once its formed. Done properly, it is wholly indefensible and takes away the contest, which is the prime ethos of our game. Its not what rugby is about.

Latu is having a great start to the season, but god damn........... he was so lucky to get away with most of those turnovers in the second half - I'm not sure he was on his feet for any of them?

I believe that generally you are required to go after the bloke with the ball not those in his vicinity. Key reasons explained to Hooper at the time were jumper still in the air, lifters tackled in attempt to sack the maul. So illegal and dangerous.

dont even know why they took him to altitude with concussion symptoms? bit of a ridiculous decision.
They thought he would be fine (as presumably he did).

He passed all the return to play protocols and it wasn't until they did contact on the Thursday that he felt symptoms again.

OK then with Foley out I think we need to revert to the more conventional and proven:

12. Simone 13. Horne 14. Kellaway 15. Folau

I haven't watched the whole match, only the first half, it was a rather strange game. So far too many tries, but the game didn't get really going

Tahs big guys failed to play well. Hooper and Israel were pretty poor.
Think Folau should go back to 15 or hit the bench, Bloke is just not where he should be.

Tahs fronties were just outmuscled. Latu got some great turnovers but probably a bit lucky at times. He sure gets low over the ball

Just a bad game by the Tahs. Expect them to fire next week.

NOTE: Missed Skelton bigtime but the result would have been similar

Latu seems to get low the way George Smith made a living, with at least one knee on the ground :)

Thought he was the best of a beaten pack. Lack of combination at 9/10 not only caused issues in attack but exposed the Tahs defensively.

The Lions are a tough team when they get a roll on like that.

The second half was pretty strange too - different to the first half, but still strange. I remember my predominant thoughts at the end were how unsatisfactory the whole game was.

This is going to be a long season for the Tahs. They look much weaker then previous years.

I don't think the Lions played all that well. They got a lot of points from rolling mauls - probably close to the difference between the two teams. The Lions defence looked positively porous at times. I think the Tahs will improve a lot on that game, especially once the injured reinforcements arrive.

I think any one of the NZ provinces would have murdered the Lions on that form. I wasn't very impressed, I didn't see that big a gulf between them and the Tahs, who also didn't impress me. Luckily for the Lions, they don't play the NZ teams till the finals.
