Nice passing and support running for the first try. Jordy Reid's charge down. Hodge's penalty from near the half way line. I thought the midfield was particularly poor - Hodge and English?
The backline organisation, and I am assuming this is Turinui, also got it very wrong: quite often they went behind three to four man wide screens and became isolated a man or two inside the Blues outside player - WTF?
Reid is a tryer, but gees he had a game to forget apart from the charge down. Having him run wide was also an utter disaster, he is a limited player comparatively at this level and if you are playing him you need to let him play to his strengths, and that is not running the ball in wider channels or linking.
All of this is not surprising if you look at how many players the Rebels are missing. The amazing thing is the Blues are also missing a lot yet the quality they had to replace them with impressive.
The lineout throwing was also poor from the Rebels, especially the reserve hooker. When you look at who they have jumping it's no surprise they got picked off quite a bit.
On the bright side Maddocks had a good debut, Mafi was good early and Stirzacker looked good before he came off. Don't know why the commentators called incorrectly called Mafi as Timani over and over though.

JGB looked ok for a first up Super Rugby start with a twice shuffled back line with Inman out just before kick off then losing Stirzaker. With the way the Rebels played it would not have mattered who played 10 they would have looked average at best.
I think Meehan would be a better option @10 than JD to be honest. JD 's time @10 expired (should have) about 2 season ago so leave him @15 where he looks to fit better.

Awful. I walked at 60min, I'm afraid to say.
The positives:
- mafi and timani offer serious grunt
- scrum solid after its schooling v reds
- maddocks good on debut
- jd more assured at 15
- English in good form
The negatives:
- back line was woeful. shovelled passes from pork chop and hodge, outside runners taking soft diagonal drift lines and no penetration. Twice in the 2nd half we got it right; leafa and English (?) ran a hard line at a hole and bang, through the gap.
- leafa still can't throw, Cummins stuffed a few calls
- jgb kicked horribly, both out of hand and from the tee
- phases were disorganised, tried to go wide without having earned it.
I've been pretty patient with the coaching but these are the same fucking errors every year. What does Mcgahan offer? At least with Hill we played with style.
Last point: I'll just hope that it's the Force that get the chop (sorry Sandgropers) and the flow-on concentration of talent means we can offload some dead weight.

Tough night for the Rebels after a decent first 25mins. Fitness looked horrible with the whole team dropping off the pace badly after 30mins. Not a lot of plan B, C or D employed by the Rebels to steady the play when things were going wrong. On field leadership needs to be accountable for this. Rebels tight 5 were too soft running the ball and hitting cleanouts. The backrow, while industrious, gave next to nothing in terms of a ball running game. Just everything about this performance was disappointing from the 30min mark. 2 basics the Rebels quickly need to rectify are the tight 5 play and a bit more control from the halves to steady the ship and turn bad ball into at least a half positive reset of structure. Hopefully things improve or it will be a tough year to be a Rebels supporter, something us Force supporters know a thing or 2 about. Doesn't get easier with the Canes in Wellington next week. If some of the basics dont improve over the next few games, i think "Dumper" may turn into "Dumpee".

Because FFS it was woeful apart from that. They had a stable scrum midfield and the best that they can come up with is to kick it long, WTF?
As for running plays of turnover ball, if they intend to run a dual line of attack those dummies in the front should try not to be so dumb. They need to at least look like they are going to get the ball and commit a couple of defenders. Instead they walked quickly forward (sometimes not even quickly) and the ball was passed 10 metres behind the advantage line to a sideways moving second line of attack that now had the defence advancing hard because they ignored the dummies in front who were plainly never going to get the ball except by some horrendous mistake, and even if they did the defender could stop scratch his nuts and still make the tackle with ease.
As with a few other comments already made one has to ask what has McGahan done in his time at the Rebels? At best it can be argued they haven't regressed. Argued I say, but I don't think anybody would win that argument, IMO they were better if more erratic under their previous coaches.

Just finished watching the game. That was pretty rough. The Rebels just panicked more and more as they fell behind and the errors just compounded.
A few players really not up to it and several of the better players just didn't perform anywhere near well enough.
Going to be tough to turn things around with so many players out injured.
I thought Gardner did a good job with the whistle and let the game flow well.
