Blues back Rene Ranger has been named as the rugby player at the centre of an assault case in Northland.

Name suppression was lifted on Ranger today.

The 23-year-old allegedly assaulted a man outside a pub in Mangawhai, north of Auckland, last August.

He was arrested several weeks later and appeared in the Warkworth District Court in October, where he was charged with injuring with intent to injure and granted interim name suppression.

Ranger admitted his disappointment when he fronted the media after Blues training on Monday.

"I'm disappointed that I was involved in something and that it has got to this stage. It's not good for me or my family and it's not good on the team," he said.

"It's now in the court's hands. I have just got to get on with my job and do what is best for this team."

Blues coach Pat Lam said the franchise would support Ranger through this process.

"While it didn't happen in our season we have been well informed with what has been going on. We will let the court take its process," Lam said.

"We are totally behind Rene and it's important now, just like he has been doing since the season started, that he focuses on his job and what's best for him and the team."

Ranger starred for the Blues in the thrilling 39-35 win over the Brumbies at Eden Park last Friday night.

Ranger plays his club rugby for Wellsford and his provincial rugby for Northland.

He is a former New Zealand Sevens representative and last year made the Junior All Blacks squad.

Bad news for All Black and Blues fans if it interrupts his Super 14 season.

He seems to be quite a good 13 and I thought he was very effective against the Reds. In my opinion, he could be benching for the All Blacks as early as this year.

Police advise that their forensic team found silver bullet casings at the scene and acting on an eye witness account (from a man dressed in native American costume) are looking for a masked man riding a white stallion.

Maybe the best way to find some form this year is to have a court case hanging over your head. Both RR and QC (Quade Cooper) have been in fine form this year on the pitch.

As one with some Maori blood I should have been offended but then I remembered some of my extended family.

We've all got those types in extended families. The poster's comments were stupid. How does he explain all the other stuff from other ethnicities? Or doesn't that fit his stereotype?

Are we talking about his stereotypical view of Maoris or his stereotype per se? :)

I wasn't having a shot at them due to there ethnicity. I was just pointing out that they both have some off field drama but are close to the best players in their teams. Most of thetime off field drama takes away from the players form but here are to guys who have risen above it.

May I point out that Cooper and Ranger share another characteristic? They are both rugby players.

is it just me or does his HUGE tackle look like there was no effort to bind leleifano. i mean his hands are up but it looks more like a token gesture. maybe im being pedantic because of the slow motion but you decide:

FFS, what is this thread about? Come down hard on RR? Abuse Maori's?

enforcer, your idea is pure bullshit. Your looking for something that isn't there, based on an off the field incident it would appear, there is NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING wrong with this tackle at all. If his assault charge hadn't come up, would you be posting this somewhere?

As for the comments regarding Maori's, some people need to take a long hard look at themselves and whether or not they should be posting such tosh on a rugby forum. I am glad to see the moderators have removed where reqd.

As for RR - I don't know too much about him, but it sounds like he's had a tough upbringing & has made some stupid mistakes in the not so recent past. If playing rugby is a way for him to grow up & mature into a fine role model, then I have nothing but respect for him. He is still a kid after all. Like QC (Quade Cooper), I hope he takes his punishment, learns from it & then continues to deliver on the rugby field.

If we have another Lauaki on our hands, then that would be a real shame to such a talent.

You weren't the poster in question being an idiot. I read your post and there were no dramas. Another one got reported on that fell into the: "he's being a bit of a dick" category. :)

Hey Major

Overall Ranger's been pretty well behaved. I hope he pulls his socks up after this, but for anyone that knows the area, I have to say I raised my eyebrows when I read "Mangawhai Tavern". Enough said. Wouldn't surprise me if someone tried to give him the beat down because he was an up and coming star.

I can see you are trying to be the moderate voice here, but trotting out the 'he did it tough' line doesn't wash with me - the courts will decide on his guilt or otherwise, and he won't have a choice when it comes to punishment.

If he does become a fine role model, I'll be with you in respecting him.

I think there is definitely a place for rugby as a safe(r) and controlled outlet for aggression - I'm not so sure it helps with larcenous urges though.

What exactly does your last sentence mean?
