I can see you are trying to be the moderate voice here, but trotting out the 'he did it tough' line doesn't wash with me - the courts will decide on his guilt or otherwise, and he won't have a choice when it comes to punishment.

What exactly does your last sentence mean?

I'm not sure what you mean by it not washing with you - I'm just pointing out it is what it is. I'm not trying to defend him, just pointing out the facts. I don't expect this to be used for him in courts, as you point out, they will decide and he'll have to take the punishment.

Last sentence is about Lauaki who is up for his 3rd case of assault now I think & he's about 28. I don't think he's going to learn & I think he's a serious waste of talent.

As for RR - I don't know too much about him, but it sounds like he's had a tough upbringing & has made some stupid mistakes in the not so recent past. If playing rugby is a way for him to grow up & mature into a fine role model, then I have nothing but respect for him. He is still a kid after all. Like QC (Quade Cooper), I hope he takes his punishment, learns from it & then continues to deliver on the rugby field.

If we have another Lauaki on our hands, then that would be a real shame to such a talent.

If he does become a fine role model, I'll be with you in respecting him.

I think there is definitely a place for rugby as a safe(r) and controlled outlet for aggression - I'm not so sure it helps with larcenous urges though.

What exactly does your last sentence mean?

I think it means Lauaki had his chance to put his troubles behind him and he just keeps infringing. He's a man now and not a boy - unlike Ranger or Cooper - and could have pulled his head in and grown up a bit. Lauaki hasn't and believe me when he burst on the scene he had some of the greatest potential I'd seen in a long time. It's a shame he's gone the other way. If he stopped eating pies and trained more, he would have been a great (or at least had a longer career at international level than he has now).

On Ranger ... this is the first time I've heard of him getting in trouble. You're right, the Courts will decide on his guilt/punishment and if there are any mitigating circumstances. I'm hoping there's a reasonable explanation to it all and I did like the fact he feels shame for his actions and their impact on his family. That's a good sign: showing remorse.

As far as I'm concerned, his background makes no difference. It cannot be used as an excuse. Nor is his obvious talent relevant to the case.

No, but it can be used as a "context" as will where the altercation took place.

Langthorne the point you seem to be banging on about is nothing like I said - I even said it's no defence & it doesn't make a difference didn't I?

I stated his background as part of my hoping that rugby gives him a way to mature & grow up into a well respected & rounded person as it doesn't sound like his background was condusive (sp?) to that.

Anyway, seems he is claming self defence, so sounds like the theory of some knob jockey wanting to have a go at a rugby player could hold some water. Doubt it will work though, self defence doesn't usually involve knocking someone unconcious and leaving them.

FFS, what is this thread about? Come down hard on RR? Abuse Maori's?

enforcer, your idea is pure bullshit. Your looking for something that isn't there, based on an off the field incident it would appear, there is NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING wrong with this tackle at all. If his assault charge hadn't come up, would you be posting this somewhere?

As for the comments regarding Maori's, some people need to take a long hard look at themselves and whether or not they should be posting such tosh on a rugby forum. I am glad to see the moderators have removed where reqd.

Lachie Turner told me recently RR is the hardest player he has ever had to tackle. Very stocky and powerful.

It's Maori, not Maoris. :)

I've been pulled up on this point by Kiwis in the past.
