Set piece magic

Sure it was somewhat riveting but it was also very very frustrating. I was just screaming from my seat to let them push it over so the game could move on. Coopers try was brilliant, those scrums ruined the second half. Also, Dean Mumm is a gumby... When they decided for a penalty i thought great that gives us an opportunity to get back in their half. And that's what happened.

EDIT: just saw that last post on page 2. I was so relieved when it went out. Heads wouldve rolled if we didn't win.

can I confirm you are complaining about a rugby game being fought on set piece play?

The issue I have with scrums aren't the scrums themselves. I actually enjoy the scrum contest. The issue I have and surely most people would agree is the time stuffing around between scrums in resting and resetting. We see zero rugby in that time and it is a very poor advertisement for our game.

I was sitting with a former prop and a former no 8 that were saying the same. The prop even said he would fast forward through those parts of the game when watching the replay.

You NSW kids may be calling for a penalty try but that shit was ridiculous. That was NOT in the spirit of the game. The entire waratahs squad + board ought to be ashamed of themselves for trying to score a penalty try. They should all forfeight the cost of the boredom. 35 minutes of 40000 peoples time at ten bucks an hour = 40000*10/(35/60) = $689655.

PLUS. Money lost to rugby because of people that won't come back after that: I'd guess 5 million in the long term

PLUS. Rugby should have a law like in the NRL, bringing the game into disrepute, $10000 fine per incident.

Phill Waugh you have a billion dollar fine.

That was not rugby. I do not care if you say the reds scrum was weak. You do not go for pushover try's in Australia. Get out.

This is easily the post of the year. Agree wholeheartedly.

Maybe you would like League better if you don't like scrums. If you do then the rest of NSW game should enthuse you.

oh please. you want a game with no set piece contest, watch league. Yes, congrats on the win, but if you cant handle a game fought and decided in the forwards at set piece, then you are into the wrong sport.

agree the resetting is a problem, but going for repeated scrums to dominate an opposition forward pack os all rugby. remember the reds fucking about with holmes v daley on and off again caused a fair few of those rests/breaks between the scrums

I woud wager if the prop and 8 you were sitting with were supporting the dominant scrum they would have changed their attitude.

I enjoy the scrum contest, a good example of the scrum contest is the bulls game. There would have been one reset and it was all good.

What I do not enjoy is 35 minutes of sitting down watching scrums reset. That kinda shit is suppoed to happen in Europe not here. The waratahs should be ashamed because in Australian rugby, you run the ball and make it exciting. It's an unwritten rule.

All my mates where leaving so I had to go, but If not, and I am deadly serious, I was going to go down to the front of the western stand and tell the waratahs how ashamed they should be.

If I were a waratahs fan I would want an apology for that kind of display. That's just not cricket, and I mean that in a metaphorical sense

I was actually expecting Shepherdson to go off "injured" to negate the only place the Tahs had any ascendancy.

you may want to watch a replay and see why there were so many resets. perhaps the reds couldn't complete and were being forced off the ball?

you should have told the tahs off - I'm sure it would have made a big impression.

again, congrats on getting the win

Phil Waugh came off as an absolute toss when interviewed. "That was a pretty special Reds defensive effort to keep you out for that 20minute period", "Nah not really... every team can defend".

You wouldn't expect anything different from him unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of respect for his playing ability (although past his prime now), but he comes across as nothing but a whining poor looser in these situations. "The points we deserved" - cry me a river. Sounds like its never the teams fault they lose, which in a way is probably what Gnostic is alluding to in his separate thread.

Take a look at Victor Matfield for a class act on the wrong end of a result, or the right end for that matter. He's having a rough run on the losing captains speeches at the moment.

spikhaza has a point - the scrum resets were the biggest load of negative bullshit play I have ever seen on a rugby pitch. And after 20minutes all NSW got from it was 3 point. Seriously. Learn to play rugby.

edit: And get fucked!

edit2: Don't ban me, I was at the game and everyone was ripping their fucking hair out, not even joking. It was appalling decision making by NSW, and whilst it was exciting rugby that the Reds held them out, it was not in the spirit of the game.

He did, actually (well, according to the ref chatter I heard through the sports ears) - but it was very late (like 75th min); and there were no scrums after that happened...

In fact your right, knowing the way the waratahs are run they don't give two shits about a spectacle or there fans. Seems to be the way things roll down there. If i was Jim Carmichael, I would be writing to the Tahs CEO and asking for an apology for losing fans.

Let's hope the Tahs do take action over Higginbotham over this as it was a blatantly illegal obstruction towards a player going full pelt...

Totally. What do you think the best punishment would be? Lynching? Drawn and quartered? Perhaps we should make this into a poll.

I think we were a bit lucky with Aussie Steve going off for the second half. No way would he have had the patience the other guy (Smith?) had with the scrums, it would have been yellow, then PT, then lets keep playing.

I find it hard to believe that tahs fans are defending waughs reset tactics when it didn't win them the game and the only reason they got so many opportunities was coopers poor kicking.

I also remember this happening when TPN was down and out for an eternity. :)
