Watched that game with my son, Nick, and couldn't take my eyes off the peeling carpet. Disgraceful! What, one of the great rugby stadiums of the world? It was crap.

The surface in the bulls game was rubbish too. Patches of dirt etc.

Congrats to Sanchez!

Interesting that Link overlooked Morgs...

someone made the point that they may be looking for sucession planning and the probability of Morgan not been around in 2011

He already was vc, so we shouldn't be surprised. Horwill must have been the same age (or one year older) when he got the captaincy.

Genia has the look of a future Wallabies captain.

Well, with Braid being announced as VC, that point about succession planning seems a bit of a joke. Can anyone see Braid being around for much longer? Link says that as a former All-Black, Braid has the experience. Well, I would have thought that being a former Wallaby VC, 20 Test caps and one of the more vocal and experienced players on the roster, Morgs would have been a monty for the role, in a mentoring off-field and traffic cop on-field kind of way. Does Link really dislike Morgs, or what?

what Link likes is forwards being skipper, or team leaders

Genia is, remember, only a half back.

no doubt Morgs will be playing a role, but that role is outwide with the fancy dans.

Yep, good to have a forward as part of the leadership group. Morgs might be the best candidate as far as captaincy skills are concerned, but he is too far from the play. Morgs, despite a good game last start is also not a guaranteed starter, whereas Braid and Genia are.

In fact, there aren't any other guaranteed starters in the forward pack. Higginbotham could be an option, as I believe he has captained at club level, but I don't think his form is exceptional. Van is probably a guaranteed starter, but generally doesn't last a game.

Coaches generally like one the captain or VC to be a forward, and the other a back. That way there's a clear forward and back leader. Works well, especially if the ref knows who is the forward leader/scrum leader so he knows who to talk to in certain situations.

Braid will definately be gone from the Reds next year. I would bet the Reds would love to retain Braid, given how he is playing right now, but there's a 2 year limit on international marquee players. Therefore, Braid has to be gone next year unless the Reds get special dispensation from the ARU.

In terms of Morgs, he's very likely to be gone next year as well. Hence why Genia, much younger and less experienced but considered a future leader, gets the captaincy/backline leadership over Morgs. With another back with the captaincy, it's very unlikely that Morgs would ever get the VC. So the question was only, which forward? None of the others really put their hands up, other than maybe Hardman.

Braid has apparently been great for the Reds in terms of off field leadership, and praised by both Mooney and McKenzie. I don't think it's any surprise he was chosen for VC after Horwill being gone, and in fact I think it's a good choice. He appears a natural leader on the field as well as off.

Succession planning? The Reds have Shaw at 7 short term, and Gill at 7 long term. Gill is the more likely option in 2 - 3 years, so I would love Braid to hang around another year or two (if the ARU allowed it) and mentor Gill. I was a fan of Shaw off the bench, gathering experience, until he nearly single handedly cost the Reds the game vs the Tahs by giving away some absolutely stupid penalties. In saying that, Shaw will hopefully get a few more goes off the bench later this year.

Braid makes great sense for VC. Kev will be back next year and things will go back to how they were before the injury. Succession planiny is not affected at all.

Up until a few weeks ago, I probably would have agreed with that. After a year out following a dreadful season I expected Morgs to come out firing this year. On the pre-season game against the Force, I thought he was simply awful. Lots of yakking, which was good, but it seemed to get in the way of any sort of defensive effort at all.

However, and it is a big however, the last few weeks (and last week in particular) he has been fantastic. I know that some consistancy needs to be seen, but if he keeps going this way who knows what may happen? I'm not dumb enough to suggest a Gold jersey is waiting for him in NZ in 2011, but maybe it is in the back of his mind? If so, unless the Rebels want him on their books I have a gut feeling he will want to stay in Qld for another year at least.

I remember sitting in a bus next to him for a week as we travelled around France in RWC07 and his mantra was all about getting another shot at the Gold jumper. He was really passionate about it. I remember also when the news filtered through about Mortlocks shoulder injury while we were sucking down some suds in Paris, he was straight on the phone to see if he was on the radar. Of course, he was also pissed as a newt so maybe his perception of reality was skewed somewhat..! :)
Unless things have changed significantly he might actually value the jumper more than a big pay-day.

I have to say I am a bit biased as I think he is a top bloke; I was as pleased as punch when he signed with the Reds. And let's be honest, you don't play 20 Tests for the Wallabies without some skills. I'd hate to see him fade away..

Anyway, thats my 2 cents worth....

I think that's a bit harsh. He may have started that season slowly, but it finished in awesome form.

Okay so Reds are playing Blues this Saturday (27/2/10) at Ballymore. Should make for a great game, hopefully the Reds can keep their performance up despite the loss of Horwill, which is a terrible, terrible shame.

I wonder how Ballymore is going to fair out. They must be bringing in temporary food and drink vans, as it really wouldn't surprise me if they get at least 20,000 (which would be sell out material). If you are going to the game, don't be spontaneous about it, make sure you purchase your tickets first, as I know first hand getting tickets at Ballymore in that queue is a bitch.

Here's some of the QRU information about it.

The Blues at Ballymore

Ballymore Stadium
Fresh from their thrilling victory over the Crusaders, the QR Reds are returning to Ballymore for one night only to take on the Blues on Saturday 27 February.

This is the first Investec Bank Super 14 rugby match to be played at Ballymore in five years and will be sure to be a night that brings old memories flooding back and for those too young to have experienced Ballymore in all its glory it will be a night to create new memories.

Tickets

With a current ground capacity of around 20,000, there may be as few as 8,000 tickets available for sale for this match so you don't want to wait! Get your tickets now through Ticketek.

Parking

On site parking is extremely limited at Ballymore and Reds members have been given first priority on pre-booking those spaces that are available.

Buses to Ballymore

(Important note: While the shuttle bus services listed below are free of charge, the use of any connecting trains, buses or ferries will require purchase of a fare. The public transport network is only free for matches at Suncorp Stadium.)

Free buses will operate to Ballymore from the following locations:

Brothers Rugby Club
Wests Rugby Club
University Rugby Club
Easts Rugby Club

These services will start at 4.30pm and run every 15minutes (approximately) with the last bus at 6.15pm. After the match, return services will run between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

And these are only the pie vans for Turinui. ::)

Just back from watching the Reds 2nd XV belt the Argie team Casi. Not sure the final score but it was in the range of 90 odd - 10.

Leroy had a great game, linked really well between backs and forwards. Scored a try and set up a couple. Interestingly did a fair bit of jumping in the lineout as well. Came off at half time.

Tasi didn't play well, looks like he is trying to do too much.

Chambers did OK. Nice off-loads and is starting to get the whole primary support thing by getting to breakdowns etc.

Morahan scored a couple of tries but didn't really stand out, similar to Toua who made some great breaks but against mediocre opposition.

Connor got stuck in and probably had a better game as he was prepared to do a bit more hard yakka.

Eddie Quirk played well and looks all the better for his time in the sevens, Snoz O'Connor was there casting his eye over some of the troops as well.

Ben Lucas looked a fair bit off the pace, first game for a while I guess.

Second half the bench was cleared and Taylor played 20 minutes at lock. Once again a fair bit of lineout ball went to him.

Jono Lance was good at no 12. Really strong in contact and always made ground. Might be a longer term inside centre rather than a fly half?

Of those who played in the second half the one who was the most impressive was Liam Gill at no.7. I'd heard a fair bit about him but never seen him play. Plays really hard on the ball and is very agressive in his defence and most else and is very athletic. A real goer and one the Reds must hang on to. Was rewarded for his efforts with a try on the final siren.

I went and checked out the massacre as well.

Few things that I noticed.

Tapuai has a pretty good kicking game - I had no idea.

Leroy was throwing 20m spirals all over the paddock linking up with the backs. I didnt know he had this trick in his arsenal.

Toua scored one try that was from well over halfway without being touched and I thought looked very classy, however it was against ordinary opposition. But he looks a composed footballer.

Connor looked good on the wing, yet too small.

Tasi always seemed busy, but not effective.

I thought the halfback Brent Hamlin was pretty impressive, crisp service and great talk.

Ed Quirk looks an outstanding talent and I would say is already alot better than Shaw and Tasi. His counter-rucking, no doubt as improved from playing in the 7s but is particularly impressive. However discipline looks to be an issue, he was constantly niggling, made a high shot, and was always looking to run into the push and shove.

Heath Tessman at hooker was another standout, very prominent in the loose and his throwing looked spot on. What is his story? could be in line for a contract with Hardman retiring?

But to be honest it was a little bit of a waste of time, The argentines had alot of heart and made some fantastic tackles but had no cohesion or structure in attack. Alot of the players were clearly amateur and unconditioned and could not keep up with the super fit academy side.

Id be putting my money on this academy side to towel up the junior tahs next week.

Not too much to take out of this game into Sunday's match. The opposition was so obviously amateur. Tah's Academy will be quite tough I would reckon, with the likes of Horne, Nadolo and McKibben, just to name a few of the backs. And I thought the forwards were tested at times against the Argentinian side. They will have to be a lot tighter in the mauls.

Agree on Tessman Tranquility, he looks a likely lad.

I wouldn't have thought Horne will play in the 2s. He is on the bench for the Tahs this week and if all goes to plan he will be in the 22 somewhere again next week.

Nadolo is rubbish, Benny Lucas and Taps will just put it in behind him and showed how poorly he moves laterally. Take into account that we will have a better balanced backrow (Quirk played 7 tonight) and more experienced front row (Slipper in for Anae), and I don't think the pack will have a problem.

Mckibben can play but out halfback isn't half bad himself. It was only his form off the training track that made him lose his Brumbies contract.

Add Tomiki and Brando to the mix with the players that played tonight, maybe Ezra as well and it's a pretty handy looking side.

Saw the 2nd half from tonight's game because I got times mixed up. Gill was seriously impressive, we should do our very best to retain him. Probably shouldn't talk him up in case McQueen sees it all :lmao:
