What has Schmidt specifically said about Kiss and/or any of the other local candidates for that matter? How do you know he has high esteem for Kiss and not the other coaches?

How much time and/or insight does he have to what the various coaches are doing? How much are his comments grounded in working experience with Kiss in contrast to the other coaches? I know he's spent 'some' time in/at the SuperRugby teams such that he could make 'some' judgement, but he hasn't aired his thoughts publicly (not that he ever would being the professional that he is).

I don't really share the idea that the Tahs are massively disadvantaged from not having played together, they are simply the team that ccame last in 2024, and early season form shows them to have improved, but still have a long way to go. They put it to the Reds for 20 minutes last night, then lost their way and the Reds were definitely the superior team, particular in terms of converting their opportunities into points.

The hate that some (and before you jumpdown my throat, only some) posters from other states have for the Tahs borders on manic, and reaks of a massive chip on the shoulder. As to the two coaches, McKellar's record with the Brumbies is, at this point, better than Kiss' with the Reds, but I think they are probably both very skilled coaches but without a competiton win between them.

As to RA stacking the Tahs with Rebels Wallabies, last night Lancaster was injured, Kailea was not selected, Kellaway had signed with the Tahs long before the Rebels demise, which leaves you with two last night,Tupou and Leota.

Yeah, he really stood out at the ground. Outshone Leota which was pretty impressive for a starting debut. The tahs most effective carrier on a night when they struggled to get much going with ball in hand.

WAs this picture taken just after Mc Reight scored & Anderson jumped on him to celebrate & damaged his shoulder?
McReight was getting attention before the try. I don't know if it was for the same thing, but he definitely had the trainer with him moments before.

Tahs started so well, I was thinking the Reds were in for a long night, and then we rallied, and I was hopeful - then it became a bit one sided. Reds lost a few to injury quite early - what happened with Faessler? According to the commentary at the time he seemed to sub himself off in the 1st half, but I didn't see what happened. Good signs for the Reds in some of the cohesion but hard to say if it was just a weak NSW team since the Reds did so poorly last week.

I think everyone just needs to chill out a bit, there’s some outrageous comments going both ways.

Regardless of what happened in the QF the Reds 2024 season was significantly improved on 2023 by a whole variety of metrics, as is the Tahs 2025 season an improvement on 2024.

if we’re going to pick out a single game to measure a coaches performance, then let’s not discuss the Wallabies vs Argentina match
The game that half the team were literally shitting through the eye of a needle the night before that they considered forfeiting because they weren't sure if they could field a team?

Really? Where was it in the QF last year? Or past week vs the Crusaders

Schmidt took over a team that didn’t make it out of the pool stage of a World Cup and had them looking super dangerous by the end of the year

Kiss took a Reds team that lost a close QF, and led them to be embarrassed in a QF
He coached them to a win against the crusaders in Christchurch last year for the first time in eons!
Also by your own measurement what has Schmidt won with the wallabies? Some respect back but that’s it.

I’m sorry but what has Les Kiss done with the Reds to earn this moniker as some world class coach any better than McKellar or Larkham. Has been a coach for 20 years and won nothing with a career win rate of sub 50%. Took over a Reds team that make the QF and proceed to take them to the…QF (in which they got embarrassed)

McKellar deserves more time with this team. No team captained by Hugh Sinclair is anywhere near winning a comp, even with Rod Macqueen coaching them
The point is Kiss, Larkham and McKellar haven’t got big runs on the board. But also there isn’t a single available coach out there that doesn’t come with a level of risk. The thing that puts Kiss in the box seat is with a short run up from the end of the rugby championship to the world cup we need a coach that will work well with what Schmidt has set up or with him as a consultant.
I actually trust RA to make the right call with this based off the last weeks signing spree.

True re: Schmidt. In raw outcomes, It's the win against England which is the notable one. The Wales series was hardly a triumph when you have clarity on where that team is at. But looking beyond the win/loss, it's hard to argue that there isn't an improvement in the team, though I'm also of the opinion that Rennie wasn't doing as poorly as some make out. If a few of those close losses had tipped another way we might have avoided the whole Eddie Jones debacle.

Also winning against the Crusaders last year was hardly notable. Everyone was doing it. Even the botton dweller Tahs (who knocked them over twice) :)

I thought he was better than Gleeson, and I would have left him on longer. If he can keep this level up, he will be a big step up from Gleeson.

We move on quickly here.

3 yrs ago Hooper was untouchable for most Tah fans. Then Gamble came along and Hooper needed to go and Gamble should be the Aussie 7. Now he’s shit.

Only 2 years ago Gleeson was the next big thing and several posters, Qwerty in particular, couldn’t see why we weren’t picking him for the Wallabies. Now we are moving on from him and the new guy in is going to be an upgrade.

I do wish players were more loyal though.

Great post TSR very pertinent. In rugby you are only as good as the current season or the next injury - which may be your last. Gleeson, to my old eyes, was never going to be a great 8 but many loved him for his big hits and hit ups! I did have an online affair with Charlie Cale and still expect great things from him but not this season, although at 24 he should be a bit bigger than he is.
