This game really highlighted that Jake McIntyre is not a Super Rugby 10. I'd like to see Greene get a chance - he seems at a club level to be a much better organiser and distributor than JM. His lack of organisation and the performance of the backs yesterday were not of professional standard.

Looks like you're right & SF came on under the scrum protocol with Browning drawing the short straw to go off. When Ready comes back from the bin SF goes off & Browning returns. SF then subs in for Ready a short time later. All covered by the scrum protocol so nothing dodgy going on.

Yes, but he didn't come on when there was a scrum, he came on because there was a lineout and the Reds obviously thought they needed a trained thrower. But I didn't think this was allowed under the protocols, I thought you had to wait till a scrum occurred. Could be wrong though.

The Tahs only just won, so it is probably gratuitous of me to be giving the Reds' selectors advice, but it seems to me that the Reds problems are twofold:
  1. 9 & 10 are not working for them. While Frisby seems to be retrievable - he needs some good coaching and getting subbed after 55 because he can't get to rucks in time - McIntyre needs to spend a couple of seasons in grade/NRC to learn his trade before he gets elevated. Greene cannot be worse and what I have seen of him makes me think he would be miles better. O'Connor obviously doesn't like him, and won't give him game time, which means he's probably the go.
  2. The Reds centre pairing are disfunctional. AF is defensively good but that's it. Kerevi is playing out of position at 13, he's played his best as a line-breaking 12 and you don't get the same sort of opportunities at 13. Hunt needs to come to 13 and that means you can get Goromaru on the field at 15. Goromaru is world cup class and just needs time in the game to adapt to playing a non-Japanese system of rugby. Once again, its clear O'Connor doesn't like him.
These two problems start with the coaching. IMO O'Connor is a mistake of the RG type. His record in Ireland screamed out for someone else to be chosen, even if that coach had less experience. On what we have seen so far he has chosen a halfback who's not fit enough to get to rucks after 60 minutes, a 10 who cannot lead, a 12 who can only defend, a 13 who should be at 12 and at least two players (Greene and Goromaru) who should be starting but who get less than five minutes each week. That behind a dominant pack is an absolute waste of the highest magnitude.

Can't see Matt o'connor getting a permanent gig.
They are clueless after 2 phases. Maybe that's mcintyres fault.
I wish they'd get their act together up there.
It stops being McIntyres fault when O'Connor ignores performance & continues to select him.
He's had 2 games since the assassination, if McIntyre is picked again, then O'Connor is confirming that this standard is satisfactory.

O'Connor has to make the change but not in a manner that hinders a young players development.

The blame rests at O'Connors feet. What does he do with his backs at training? So far to me it looks like he doesn't know shit from cake. Another poor coach that needs to be purged.

We have zero game management and it is killing us. We have a wealth of big runners and have completely forgotten what an inside ball looks like. We used to tear defences apart with that one. We are so far behind the gain line when our outside backs receive the pill, more or less have it shoveled onto them without any form of deception from the ten.

Between breakdowns our forwards have know clue as to where they should be and are either ineffective receivers or just plain in the way. Genia and Cooper were exemplary in sorting this stuff out on the field and the team had a bloody pattern to play to.

Fix these things up and the Reds will be a tough team to come up against.

Not sure I get your point, kneeing someone is ok if your intent wasn't to injure?

It all depends how you look at things, I recall Jed Holloway pushing a Reds play in the face forcefully with an open palm.

I guess it is alright to attack a players head if the intent was not to injure.

The Reds players on may occasions apart from the set pieces just are not switched on. Case in point Browning or Shatz can't remember which=, was stripped one on one by Lucas in the closing stages. To have such poor ball control going into contact that a small 9 can strip a backrower like he did is just lazy.

i think throwing jake mac under the bus is poor form.

he has a 1/2 who thinks that slow ball still isn't good enough, and plays for ponderously slow ball. the two halves outside don't really offer any support or options.

he's a young guy thrown in the deep end in a backline that just doesn't want to run onto the ball. i'd be looking elsewhere at other playing combos around him before lighting the bonfire and grabbing a pitchfork.

he is definitely green but it's hard to judge his true value until he gets some players outside who think that running really is something that's supposed to be done during the game, not just at training.

Not sure what your point is. FWIW, I think what Holloway did is worse than a punch to the face purely because if a Reds player retaliated to that they'd probably get the penalty against them.

You will find in that little melee that a Reds player also pushed Holloway in the face with an open palm. Maybe that Reds player should have been penalised as the third person in?

Someone's got to break this circle.
The slow ball is due to the fact that no one is getting to the gain line.
Not running onto the ball is partly due to passes being thrown at or behind and partly due to no one knowing what's meant to happen next.
Reds pigs are good. Gill is great over the ball. Keep the emphasis in close and hit the gain line. The rest will come - its not rocket surgery.
Playing all those crappy switches and second receiver plays 10m behind the gain line has an entirely predictable outcome.

IMO I think O'Connor has changed the backline approach and the style of play dramatically for the better. The first couple rounds we barely made any line breaks or dented the line now we have been there or there abouts each game scoring points, but by goodness we have blown far too many and dropped to much pill.

The fundamental skills in our backline are at a very low standard actually the whole squad that comes down to the recruitment of previous years and also player 'pressure' execution. I've preached about it a number of times but when you have Fainga'a and Kervei together in the centres there is absolutely no ball playing ability.

Whats difficult for the coach is do you go young and raw or have at least one old head in the backline to settle things when they go to strife. Everyone is aware of the inexperience in our team this season. What happens if you drop Fainga'a for Paaiaua. That's;

9. Frisby
10. McIntyre
11. Nabuli
12. Paaiaua
13. Kerevi
14. F'Sautia
15. Hunt

That to me measuring up to the past Reds back lines look like a 2nd string outfit. This is were whoever is recruiting should be axed. The QUALITY of the players we have lost last season far outweighs what we have signed/re-signed for not only this season but moving forward.

9. Genia > Tuttle (2018) /Gale (2016)
10. Cooper > McIntyre (2017) /Greene (2016)
11. Nabuli - F'Sautia > Laloifi (2016)
12. Tapuai > Taefu (2016)
13. Kerevi
14. O'Connor > Gibbon (2016) /Kuridrani (2017)
15. Turner > Goromaru (2016)

Close association with politicians does it, its why Canberra was put where it was and no decent highways, to try and stop the contagion.
You realise only four of the politicians come from Canberra. The bulk come from NSW, Qld and Victoria.
