But the occasion has been hijacked by Stan Pilecki, the man after whom Queensland’s best-and-fairest medal is named.
The legendary hard man of the great Maroon sides of the 1970s and 80s urged former players to turn up at Ballymore to remind current Reds of their responsibilities. As painful as the “morale boosting” gathering promises to be, it will be less embarrassing than the alternative suggested by one former official, that past players boycott the training session in protest at the limp performance of the Reds who have fallen from the heights of a title win in 2011 to now be fourth last on the Super Rugby table with only five wins from 15 matches.
In a thundering email sent to the former players in the wake of Queensland’s soft capitulation to the Force on Saturday night, Pilecki growled it was time to stop “mollycoddling” the Reds.
“I find it hard to support a team that doesn’t support itself,” Pilecki wrote.
“I was embarrassed and disgusted with the efforts shown on Saturday. I don’t mid losing as long as you try to win … have a go! Not too many guys had a go on Saturday. They showed little pride in the jersey.”
