How did the Reds get out of that last couple of minutes?? Epic defence.
Kaplan threw a lot of warnings around, very surprised he didn't go to cards (possibly both ways). Not specifically directed at either of these teams, but I hate it when refs escalate rounds of pre-warnings, warnings and "now I really mean it" warnings and do nothing.
The Reds roll on. Might want to tighten some wheel nuts though! ;)
Its the Tah pressure that keep him from the cards. ;)

What would your decision have been?
Tough decision. Either tackler "no release" or tackled player not releasing the ball, as you say, but split decision as to which call is right! But he had 2 goes before Whitelock dived on him to push him over, so not a fair try.

I know we are in the wrong thread so I'll make this my last one on this. Here is a clip of the incident, starting at 0:50

Watching it in real time, I really am pretty comfortable with this decision. It is only when you slow it down and show every painstaking moment frame by frame that it looks like it shouldn't be a try. I really don't think it is fair to say he had two goes at playing the ball, it all happened before he even had one go.

How many times are the Reds going be penalised without a yellow? Just warned them then Genia with ANOTHER cynical penalty.

No, the Reds have infringed significantly more.

Only because Kaplan forgot about the rule where you have to release the tackled player before you go for the ball.

He decided to apply it against A Fa'ainga in the 78th ish minute - you can't tell me the highlanders weren't guilty of the same previous to that!

Just back from the game.

Unfortunately, it's impossible for me to tell you what was going on because there was some fucking idiot running all over the place waving his arms and blowing a whistle.

This. I was there too and everyone had the shits big time with that ref. Who the fuck was he? Complete muppet. Utterly inexplicable.

Kraplan. I thought he was only supposed to cruel the Tahs. His games end up a shitfight where both teams don't know what he is going to blow at the breakdown far too often.\

Still, it was probably more sporting to spend the game yelling at him from the stands rather than abusing Cowan, which was my initial plan.

He wasn't as bad as you probably think. I was watching on television and the crowd blew up a few times unjustifiably. But no doubt the cards should have come out for both sides.

And what was its security not escorting him from the field? It felt like he was reacting the the crowd booing him after about 20 minutes. How many hits FTS and FTA put in. Absolute wrecking balls in defense. We are going to miss Higgers next year.

Did they show the didgeridoo player on tv? thought it was good the way he played the teams on, would like to see more I it, really added to the theatre of the game.

Great result for the Reds, in the end.
Positives
  • Quade has found his vintage form. Definitely looked like the best 10 in Aus tonight, forgot how good his pass was. Some stupid decisions (the kick to Higginbotham which either needed to go deeper or needed to be passed), but they're just a byproduct of Quade coming back to his best. Also, boy did he defend well.
  • Simmons has turned a corner.
  • I thought Radike actually put in a solid game.
  • Lucas showed why he's such a valuable player on the bench, played extremely well when he came on.
  • F'Sautia is an absolute gem, a wing tandem of F'Sautia and Ioane will be devestating soon, if not now. Would like to see one of CFS and Shipperley given a shot at 15, still not a big Morahan fan.
  • Genia and Cooper are back and will be a force to reckon with over the next few months.
  • Thought Harris had a good game too, it'll be interesting to see what happens when Tapuai gets back into form (Harris' kicking is invaluable, but thought Tapuai was the best performing Red when he went down injured).
  • Defence is back to the stubborn defiance of 2010.
Negatives
  • Scrum was terrible, it hasn't been too bad this year but it was shown up tonight.
  • Injuries to CFS and Simmons are not good news. Simmons was really coming into form, hopefully its just a mild sprained ankle (correct me if I'm wrong but that's what it looked like from my seat at Suncorp). CFS was electric and would've been great against the Tahs, sadly that hammy looks bad.
  • We were monstered at the rucks by a more organised pack. Reffing decisions aside they were dominant at the rucks. Need Gill and Robinson tandem to get going again.
All in all, plenty of positives going into the grudge match, but also plenty to work on over the week. Hopefully the return of a few key players eventuates and we go into the match as close to full strength as we can, which I think would like something like this:
1. Holmes 2. Fainga'a 3. Slipper 4. Simmons (?) 5. Wallace-Harrison 6. Robinson 7. Gill 8. Higginbotham 9. Genia 10. Cooper 11. Ioane 12. Harris 13. Fainga'a 14. Shipperley 15. Morahan 16. Hanson 17. Daley 18. Samo 19. Butler 20. Lucas 21. F'Sautia (?) 22. Tapuai

Are people really criticizing Kaplan for that game?

Kaplan was fine, possibly one of the best games ive sen him ref, except that he should've carded the Reds after the 100000th warning in their 22m........

If anything, the Reds got the run of the green with some decisions.......

CFS looked great until the injury. Hopefully it is not a high grade hamstring tear for him.

Some of the media reports were saying a knee injury for Simmons which if correct could be a worry for his season (and the Reds). Samo might be required to play lock.

Not to mention the Wallabies. We are pretty thin on locks at the moment, except for uncapped possibilities.

And he calls the lineouts for the Reds, so a double blow.
