if the Reds want a boost early in the week, they may get it from the fact that the Bulls have been preparing down the Gold Coast.

Not a good sign for mine. Too easy to get suckered into the holiday lifestyle.

The Brutes only have to look at the Shark blue print to knock the Reds over easily. Keep the ball with the forwards, maul them, dominate the lineouts and defend well. think at this stage the Stormers do this even better then the Brutes.

The Reds should aim to get at least 40% but they also have to play the wide game and have to play a 80 minute passionate game at home, like the Blues did two weeks ago. Anything less and they'r dead.

Yeah, kick the ball out (and into the stands), chase hard and put pressure on the set piece. Essentially play the Reds like you play the chiefs, set piece to set piece and attack through the 10 channel with wave after wave of Bok monsters.

Bulls have to be carefull playing the kicking game, if they dont get it right the Reds have the speed and skill in the back 3 to capitalise.

Unlike the chiefs however the Reds main attacking channel isnt on the wings rather the 9-12 channel, i wouldnt be surprised if the Bulls try to close this down by pushing in a bit, leaving there flanks vulnerable all day long.

I like the RL approach, make Cooper and Genia do 20 tackles plus each sticking them on the bottom of the ruck and see how much petrol they have left to attack.

Agree. The Sharks dominated the Reds ruck.
I'll be at the game to see what links got planned

Agree, as long as there aint to many cows around.

Thing about the Brutes is that they have to much experiense in players like Matfield & FdP who know exactly what needs to be done in preparation for this.

If the Bulls kick away possession like they did on the weekend they will be playing right into the Reds hand.
It will be a great game and I will be there as well.

I'd love for this game to turn out like the Boks game at Suncorp last year. It would really validate how far the Reds have come this year. I can't really see an upset happening, but I'm already getting that tingling feeling thinking about being in the stands for this one. I think we'll know in 20 mins whether its going to be a flogging by the Bulls or a gallant stand by the Reds.

Reds attack- good
Reds Defence/dicipline - not so good
Bulls Attack-Good
Bulls Defence- not so good

Considering there is no Tahs game this round, I am looking forward to this one, its goona be a cracker of a game and I expect to be a large crowd/tele audience, which can only be good for the QRU. Reds are going to need all their firepower for this one and best of luck to them

I'd like to see Hardman and Byrnes starting this game. We need to have as strong a set piece as possible. I think Fa'ainga lets us down a bit in this area. We are also going to need our loose forwards to have a blinder.

Hmm. Not sure of this. Saia has his faults but he is doing the job pretty well so far.

I think I'd rather see him start and use Hardman as an impact player around the 50-60 minute mark (or if Saia loses the plot, whichever comes first!).

Agree about Byrnes though....

Fuck you'd hope so given the current state of their financial situation!
Anyway it's going to be awesome to watch the REDS get up again and cement their place in the top 4...

The Reds defence I believe is second best in the competition at the moment, though I agree about their discipline issues.

I think I'd go for a team along the lines of this...

1. Holmes
2. Fa'ainga
3. Weeks
4. Simmons
5. Humphries
6. Higginbotham
7. Braid
8. Leroy
9. Genia
10. Cooper
11. Ioane
12. Fa'ainga
13. Chambers
14. Davies
15. Hynes

Key notes

  • The half back battle will be key to the game
  • Sustaining Matfield's line out presence is key
  • Cooper needs to have his head switched on, discipline
  • No stupid penalties, only at maul time, I wouldn't mind if they are committed,
  • Reds are not going to win by hitting the ball up constantly

The Reds are a definite chance at this game, the Bulls all year, haven't faced a back line that can match there's. So we will definitely see what can be created here.

You know its funny, that ever since the Reds are successful, I now wake up to watch the Reds play. People start talking about the Reds and what has happened to them. I don't want to curse this, but the culture of the QLD Reds is back.

Fair points raised, my comments:

Link said via twitter that he's been dreaming tactics for this game for months.

So what are yours for him? (and "loosies/backs/quade/tight five playing well" aren't what we're looking for.

I'll start off with

1) The transition zone. As Burgess exploited a few rounds back, the Bulls fan their pigs out leaving gaps just outside the ruck. I'm expecting a lot of those flat pop passes from Genia and a big display of his running game. S Fainga'a works well in this channel along with Van the Man and Byrnes. Could really do with Leroy stepping up.

They have been exploited in this area, and the second half against the Chiefs they fixed it by committing more players to the ruck and the fringes. They Bulls want to have their big ball runners in the back line and try to get turnovers with as few players as possible. When it works, guys like Spies and Rossouw usually make yards and they go from there. If this strategy doesn't work they have struggled in some games when they don't change the plan. They will be mindful of Genia.
2) Kirchner. I reckon he's very rattle-able and with Rocket Rod and Morahan putting a good kick chase together (like they did this week), this could be a good source of pressure and territory. With Habana gone, back 3 danger is a lot less.
Kirchner has been rock solid in defense. The Bulls defensive frailties have come from lack of organisation and problems in the 13/14 channel. I believe tingling Kirchner out won't bear you much fruit.
3) Lineout. Like the Bok gameplan, this is the key plank of their territory game. Let them have it unopposed/without pressure, and you're giving them carte blanche. This is Van's chance to push the Wallaby squad by getting in the air in front of Victor whenever possible. Alternatively, let Byrnes and his teeth off the leash.
I don't quite know how Byrnes' teeth will help the Reds at the lineout but I guess you'll take any sharp edge you can get. :)
Other thoughts?

I expect a very tight game from the Bulls, with a lot of kicking when they are in their own half. The plan against the Chiefs in the second half was to kick when they are in their own half , give the defense time to set and back themselves to smash the attackers.

The key for the Reds will be to put pressure on du Preez and Steyn, the latter who has been very much out of sorts. This is where the structure to their play starts and the Blues managed to break it down.

I am picking the Bulls by less than seven in a low scoring game for the simple fact that the Reds have the travel problem to deal with and the Bulls will be rested and focussed, and their structure will see them through.

The QLDers also need to win the ball in the air. The Bulls resort to the mid-field bomb and maul when they aren't getting much joy out wide. Genia is very good under the high ball but Hynes etc will need to really assist in this regard.

I'm not sure which Hynes you have been looking at but the one who plays for The Reds is fantastic under the high ball.

He wasnt doubting his skill under the high ball, rather I think he was saying he will have to bring his top game to support Genia, who is also highly skilled under the high ball.

Now that the Brumbies and Waratahs are gonnneee for the season, the Reds really need to win this for Aussie rugby and keep the finals dream alive.

Does anyone reckon old man Turinui (at 28 years old) will make an appearance on the bench?
