Lilo and Lucas?
Lilo starting to look pretty good, early days. Lucas will never be seriously considered as long as he is kept in the "Supersub" category. If he's gonna be a 10, he needs to be playing 10 (when back). Hence my thoughts he might be better away from the Reds to get a clear run in the position.

Good points Cyclo. But I would say that all of the names mentioned, with perhaps the exception of Harris and Barnes, are good 10s and along with a few others have been unable to show their full potiential due to injury. Harris and Barnes I seperate out as I belive that they are more inside centres then Flyhalves.

Strategic use of the bench might play a major part in tonights game, Hooper for the Brumbies, and Holmes, Samo and Quirk for the Reds definitely have the ability to impact the game.

Talking to brumbies fans about hopper is like talking to kiwis about sbw. As I told those guys, if he's THAT good, he wouldn't even be considered to warm the bench.

Hooper is good. Gill is better. Joking, joking.

I am actually incredibly excited about this match, as their are so many tangibles that we haven't seen before. Backrow, Lane, Toua.
At the very least, we should see a slightly different mode of play and if the fatties can aim up against 'the most cohesive forward pack ever assembled in Australian rugby', we should go okay I think.

Reds by 5-10

To be honest, I think he made the Hooper out of spite of how much we listen to you lot go on about him being the next Pocock. Yeh he is a good player, being a standout in 3 matches doesn't make you a superstar. Come back to me at the end of the season then I'll tell you if he deserves the hype.

Oh, the sweet delicious ironing...

The past year all we've heard is that Gill is the next Wallaby openside, and now that Hooper is performing better some people are really feeling put out...

Apparently it was laughable to even mention Hooper in the same breath as Gill only a few months ago...

Yes, it's still early in the season... but this is just... wow...

Slim, I am more than willing to hang my hat on this statement. You can come back to it whenever you want, it's actually a freebie.

Gill is a better prospect that Hooper, and will be a far superior player at both Super and Test level.

The fact that as you say 'performing better' is in your own words 'wow' because Gill has been sharing the 7 role in a forward pack that is not performing.

Let's all just put this niggling rubbish aside, and hope for a great game tonight, and then start the what if's and whodunits after the siren has sung.

And there it is...

It's probably fair, Gill has more potential and I'll back him to become a superior player - has the more instinctive game that McCaw has.

That said atm Hooper is performing better, he has dominated a Super Rugby game and is impacting a game more. Gill has performed strongly but not up to Hooper's standard yet, he'll catch up he's a year younger isn't he.

Just be glad we have another Smith/Waugh pair to wear gold for the next 10 years.

Yes, it would be interesting to see Hooper when playing in a pack that is a mess and doesn't allow him to focus on the breakdown and that alone. Gill has been quite good in a pack often beaten. Hopefully soon we can see what he can do when not trying to do others jobs. Both without doubt very good prospects but with a long way to go yet before such bold claims about their futures can be made.

Now, apologies to all non-Reds fans of the board. After witnessing the recent Hooper love i can just how boring the constant talk about every bloke that has had 2 good games being the next big thing in the wallabies can get. I will endeavour to present balanced analysis in the future.

I don't actually think it is that far sighted to be talking about both of these players as test options. Matt Hodgson is 2nd best 7 in the country, but has struggled at test level in the past and is getting on. Saffy looks a great prospect, and has a more mature body than both of these blokes however he is still playing a 6 and a half role like Dusatoir and we all know Australian rugby needs a scavenger (sic Ireland). The reality is one of these blokes will be the backup before too long.

Quite fitting that the Reds quest for a turnaround is being played on the Easter weekend.

A pity that they are not playing on Sunday speckie.

It's difficult for a fan when their team has to deal with the adversity of injuries beyond their share, as the fans of the Lions would attest to, but it can get dividends later on.

Oz Super teams don't have the benefit of a Currie Cup type competition to assess their fringe players in and sometimes the replacements do better than you would have expected, having not seen them play above the club level. Even if the opposite applies, that is a positive in a way, because a 3rd fellow, or even a 4th can get a shot - and the 2nd work on his shortcomings.

I don't know that young Sam Lane will make his mark, but at least Oz rugby will get first shot at him. Looking at the video, he looks like a good ball player, and better than his old man was, though he would want to be, being a specialist 10.

As for the breast beating about Gill and Hooper: let's wait and see. IMO Hooper was the best player at the Oz Schools tournament in 2008 but we kept hearing about the U/16 player north of the Tweed, who could play a bit. I couldn't wait to see them oppose each other in 2009 but it never happened. Hooper had to have a knee reconstruction and missed nearly all of the 2009 school season.

It is much too early to make a call on these splendid youngsters especially as Gill is younger and also hasn't had the Super experience of Hooper. Both found themselves in Super teams where they had to contend with other fetchers and be rotated, but that was a good thing at their age: one wouldn't have wanted them to burn out young. Few young players can play like a grown man, as Pocock did, after they walk out of the school gates for the last time.

Let's not beat our breast and instead be happy that in a couple of years' time Oz could have two excellent candidates to back up Pocock - as some old fella (ahem) foretold 3 years ago.

You're right about the Hooper op BG - the memory fades sometimes.

You must be chuffed by the way your guys are playing even though they lost against the Sharks. Christian is not getting huge wraps but he should be. He could make a case to Deans this year for the EOYT and his kicking percentage of 88% at the minute and the ability to play both 10 and 12 - and even 15 - will do him no harm at all.

I liked the way the forwards played too, especially around the 30 minute mark when they were wading through the Sharks ruck, which shocked them, as Oz teams are not supposed to do that, though the Force are not too bad of late.

I usually go for the underdog team in Oz derbies and will so again.

Although the Reds and Tahs are not playing well the Conference system gives them a shot at the final series, with the Brumbies - and the Force won't die wondering. This will not sit well with fans in the other two unions but too bad - their unions should not have agreed to it; so don't blame us.

And if whoever the Oz Conference winner is at the end, they may have got there by finishing with a wet sail, after having been becalmed in the first half of the season, and challenge at the finish line.

It's not all doom and gloom.
