Reds 2022

Yeah, I guess Wright didn't say he was going elsewhere.

Anyway, Reds squad looking very stable. Hegarty, BPA and MoSo the only departures. I do kind of get the feeling they need to freshen things up a bit otherwise you run the risk of getting stuck in a rut and doing the same thing again and again. Need a re-fresh every year.

Jordy Petaia playing fullback may definitely add this. A full season (hopefully) of Vunivalu may help as well, but it would be nice to get some fresh blood somewhere in the starting team just to provide a point of differnce.

I remember Wayne Bennet had a rule where he would enforce a 20-30% (cant remember exact figure) turnover in his squad each year just to ensure there were fresh faces pushing the older players and competitiveness in the squad remained.

A look back at the Reds in the 2011 - 2013 period, they retained 90% of the squad both years, probably retained some players who didn’t deserve to be, and missed out on others who should have been recruited.

I wonder if one of the Sevens players would be a good pick up and help with that refresh? With the Olympics on this year it'll be the right time to get anyone keen to transition over to 15's to increase their earning potential. The reds settled environment and a strong local club comp would have to make it look like a great spot to do that.

Maybe Longbottom as a halfback with a bit off utility?

I think Wayne Bennett’s rule was based on having a normal spread of young guys to veterans.

Reds after a new major sponsor for 2022, St George to move from naming rights to sleeve sponsor

I thought this was supposed to happen last year/this year, but I guess they worked out a temporary extension with St George while everything was still up in the air.

Probably for the best in the end, after the season on the field and the way the new broadcast deal has gone they're in the best position to attract sponsorship since the 2011 title. Excited to see who it ends up being.

Yes they announced the same last year but then stuck with the existing sponsorship regardless.

Agree they’re probably in a much stronger position to negotiate noting the recent success and exposure generated through Stan/Nine.

With the ongoing injury issues JOC (James O'Connor) is having I'm a bit more worried about our 10 stocks. Looks like Jack Debreczeni is running around NPC again this year, this time at Canterbury. I haven't seen him play in a while but he could potentially be a good option for 10 coverage while we bring some younger guys through.

Filling the flyhalf position is a concern and particularly when our friend at Newstar holds the stocks. Over on the Wallabies thread the names being thrown around are out of the Red’s archives. Debreczeni is a sensible option based on past performance. Really, who else is there who we haven’t pissed off and not already contracted in 2022? What about Campbell Parata?

Not sure how he's tracking, but there's a Campbell Morgan-Parata named as an inside back for Tasman Mako this year, which I'm pretty sure is him:

My understanding is that he sees himself as every bit the kiwi, so it might be a hard ask to get him back over here, particularly given he would only ever make sense as a long term option.

Outside of Carter Gordon - whos the best flyhalf running around in QPR at the moment? I don't think the Reds have much folding left in their pockets, they seem to have retained most of the current squad for at least another year, so a budget backup option might be on the cards.

I think the fall-back options next year are Lawson Creighton and Hamish Stewart, with Tom Lynagh and Taj Annan been the long term options.

Parata’s father is an agent here in Aus and has connections with the Reds. The discussions would have been had I’m guessing.
I watched Taj Annan play at flyhalf against TGS a couple of weeks ago and think he’s more of a fullback. He was out injured and didn’t think the Nudgee or BBC flyhalf on the weekend were much chop. Lynagh arrives soon with all bets with him. We just need to keep JOC (James O'Connor) fit for the next couple of years.

Complete the Quade comeback
Hahaha, I did have that thought for a moment yesterday. I think he'll be much more likely at the Rebels in a player/coach role though, particularly given he has a good relationship with Stiles.

Good coach for Carter with those big looping passes. Not sure Quade ever did work out how to stop throwing intercepts though...

yeah, as Adam says its probably (1) Hamish Stewart (2) Lawson Creighton at the moment with the young lads a last resort.

In club land, who is there?

Norths - Jacob Prideaux
Brothers - Patrick James
Sunnybank - Liam McNamara (mostly)
Bond - James Abrosini
UQ - Bradley Twidale of late
GPS - Jason Hofmeyr recently
Souths - Roman Prasad
Easts - Lachlan Kirk

Of that lot, I'd back Patrick James probably. Experienced head. Obviously a few Reds lads at Brothers so some combination there. Has played NRC under Thorn with many of the Reds squad too.

Speaking of broader squad members, really like the look of Lucas Ripley - I assume he's in our academy system somewhere?

Isaac Henry could be a wildcard inclusion in the mix given he played 10 for BBC 1st XV - a long time between drinks though
