Reds 2021

McReight was an exceptional leader for Brisbane City in the NRC for the few games he had with them. And did well with the U20s.

Yeah, he did. But he debuted of the bench half way through last year and as enough pressure on him with already being the anointed one.(Edit : sorry - this is wrong. He debuted 2019, but he was still very much a rookie last year IMO, albeit a very, very good one).

What if the season goes badly. What if we get 2/3 through and the Reds are winning at sub 50%, our lineout is the shit show it was last year and McReight is struggling a bit for his own form. What if O’Connor gets 3 games in and it’s clear he’s already looking at his next great adventure. What if we have a major off-field incident or a player manager manages to convince 3 key players they should take some sort of action to trigger a get out clause. What if we have a major break out and the Captain has to reconcile the responsibilities the Reds management has bestowed on him and a bunch of team mates who are a bit over being asked to take a hit again.

Anyone can be a good captain when things are rosey.

Any yes, I get that in some of those scenarios Liam Wright could step back in.

I just think it is unnecessary pressure that doesn’t need to be placed on McReight.

There are people who still hate Hooper for how he responded in the Beale/Patston fiasco.

I think ASY (Angus Scott-Young) has more in the bank than Uru does to get the starting nod. More importantly, ASY (Angus Scott-Young) is carries himself pretty well infront of the cameras as well.

Did Sam Scott-Young ever captain the Reds? He was well before my time so I've got no clue.
Can’t remember if he captained, but he sure as hell lead from the front.

He and Angus are very different as players though.

Ah nice - here's one to test your memory Reg, how many Father and Sons have captained the Reds? If Angus got the gig, would he be the first?

yeah I believe so. Some close calls.

Paul McLean captained QLD as did his grandfather, Doug.

Tommy Lawton Snr captained QLD but surprisingly his grandson, Tommy Lawton Jnr did not (nor did Rob).

Annabelle Codey captained Easts to a Premiership last year and I reckon will captain QLD soon, to follow in the footsteps of her father, Dave.

Oh, I'm not suggesting Uru would be starting week one, but more speculating as to where he could get to with a half dozen Super Rugby Games. He looked very impressive in the trial. And could/would be getting close to being on par with ASY (Angus Scott-Young) at least from the trial.

I agree Uru looked good in the trials and hence important to give him game time Super Rugby AU to see what he can offer....bench option?

Yeah, I think Uru will get a bench spot. Can he play in the locks?
He could be a nice forward utility option. He's probably big enough to play as a lock, looked like he could get through the work for a lock in the trial game... but it's (relatively) easy to show up big in a single trial game than it is to do it week in week out at Super Rugby.
The thing that really excites me about Uru is just his physical potential he's got that Naisarani-esqu build, and could run the ball like Naisarani, but he's got a much more dynamic game. His problem is doing it for 20-30 (bench) or 60-80 (starter) min a game. He can jump in the line-out, tackles well enough, his his rucks, he just can't keep disappearing in games like he has, and can be error prone (although maybe/hopefully those are just an experience thing).

Where Uru will end up by the end of the season -- could be a Wallaby (granted unlikely), but I'd love to see him getting a consistent bench spot, coming in for 20 min like a raging bull to finish a game. He can easily play 6 or 8, and probably cover a lock position too. It's possible he could pinch a starting spot from ASY (Angus Scott-Young) but Uru would be the first out.
I don't think anyone can deny the potential oozing out of him. He's got the height, the body, the skill set, just really hope he figures it out at Super Rugby level.

Uru played lock for Easts in their grand final run last year

He was very good there for Easts. I don't know if he has the work rate to be a Super Rugby/International lock though.

I think Uru's best asset is his work in contact and range with the ball in hand, he's quite a dynamic player, playing in the backrow he can afford himself more opportunities like this. I think a Super level lock needs to have a high work rate of hitting multiple rucks back to back, both in attack and defence and making their presence felt, something I think Blyth did very well last season. That type of work is draining and would take away from Uru's main skill set.

Just my opinion.

Just letting everyone in here know that I run a rugby podcast called the Sideline Experts that will be back next week. Last year we had some awesome guests (with a particular focus on Queensland as we are based here) including Harry Wilson, Fraser McReight, Byron Ralston, Josh Nasser, Tom Wright, Tim Horan, Sean Hardman and the guys from GAINLINE Analytics.

Been part of the GAGR community for a while now and if you guys get a free moment I think you might find it interesting. Also if there is anyone you might want to here from in 2021 let me know and we will try sort it

Think these type of decisions are all about team balance .

You can have someone like Uru playing lock without really changing his game dramatically if you have someone like ASY (Angus Scott-Young) at 6 doing the hard yards around the ruck. Someone has to fit that role.

Bit like who plays 7? An on-baller isn’t always required if you have other guys in your forward pack who are hard on the ball. Traditional positional roles are great , but sometimes you just have to pick your best players to get the job done.

While Wright is unavailable and LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) suspended think we will see quite a bit of Uru and ASY (Angus Scott-Young).

Must admit, I’m concerned about how much impact losing Wright will have on the balance of the team, his contributions all over the park and his intelligent leadership will be hard to cover.

"Plays a lot closer in weight" If that is what we are going on Sean McMahon is 140kgs and Rob Simmons is 65kgs

No that’s not what I meant.
Anyway, you asked so I gave two examples and explained why I have that opinion, if you don’t believe that then fill your boots.

I certainly don’t believe he is a similar weight to the likes of Wilson/Naisarani and he wouldn’t be the first professional athlete to inflate their stats.

Smash 4ltrs of water before the offical weigh in always helps, rush to the toilet as soon as it's over. Happens all the time.

ASY (Angus Scott-Young) is listed as being 1cm shorter than Harry Wilson on the various profiles but pictures of the two of them together generally make ASY (Angus Scott-Young) look slightly taller.

I would guess they're very similar in weight.
