I think there's a difference between signing the Wallaby Captain, who plays in the position where we historically produce the most talent, to a massive deal for 5 years and signing a heap of up and coming players, all be it some are Wallabies, to long term deals.

It is my understanding the Reds are also benefiting from many U20 stars being Queenslander. The Creme de la creme of aussie youth who are also the target of RA initiative to lock in young talent. I'm sure this must be beneficial when it comes to what can be offered to the youth and for how long.

It's also a huge tick for Brad Thorn and how these players have learnt and responded to his coaching style. Didn't he bring most of them through the 20s?

Rodda is the closest thing to a Thorn clone currently in Australian rugby. If he had done a runner on the Reds it would have been a bit worrying!!

Wait, you think I've got something to do with Picone? Haha I think agents are a scourge on sport. Barking up the wrong tree there Bobby.

No!

Old mate was throwing your name in as a Red Herring..

You pass the muster mate.

Lets all carry on shall we, this is turning into a game of chinese whispers.

didn't everyone bitch when Hooper got a 4 year deal..

Sigh.

Its very different when a player is signed to the national union as opposed to the state union.

The state union contract means that player is staying with the franchise and most importantly staying the country.

The national union, especially on a large contract, essentially means that player has a mortgage on that position again especially so if if that person is the skipper.

Its gets even more concerning when you have two players who are world class in that position, because you de-motivate one player because he sees that signing as that he needs to change position or being a secondary player. Rather than pure competition by the virtues of our favourite form of social organisation..... capitalism!

Caveat as to why this hasn't been the worst thing in the world though is that David is retiring...... it is Liam Wright and Fraser McReights problem now.

Hi Liam Gill we miss you too.

Yes, Rodda and Tupou have both signed contracts with both the QRU and RA, both have a significant portion of their contracts topped up by RA as players of national interest for the Wallabies. RA will be paying around half of the contracts for those players.

Reportedly RA also came to the table for Petaias contract.

And as the best players in their position, without peer, that is a great investment.

Props rarely play 80 minutes so it makes sense to lock in 2 (AAA,TT).

Hi Liam Gill we miss you too.

Like these 2 at the Red's how's it going to be if one or both of them end up on the bench at the Reds for the next 4 years.. or is ok that Wright moves position so McReight can play? Or that ok at the state level ?

Great question.

However Wright is a Wallaby & McReight hasn’t started a game yet.

So you sign both, a hazard of producing 40% of players in the country.

Wright will move to 6, or one will move on. But McReight needs to prove that he is capable at the level first.

Good competition, no one has a mortgage & Fraser will keep Liam accountable. Not to mention Harry.

To quit the hypotheticals, Hooper was on nearly the biggest contract we have (long term) & named at skipper in the only position we consistently produce world class players. However, due to Dave’s injuries it will work out fine. Will be interesting who the next long term 7 signed is and who we lose like we did Liam Gill.

Wright at 6 is different from any other openside in the country right now because he's tall enough to fit the traditional position description.

You don't want a blindside who is actually an openside. But I suppose it's better than not playing an openside at all like some.

Yep, but I think he even plays like a 6.

He’s good over the ball without being a true pilfer titan, defends savagely, good ball carry, lineout etc.

Think Dusautoir.
