Reds 2020

Sigh.

Its very different when a player is signed to the national union as opposed to the state union.

The state union contract means that player is staying with the franchise and most importantly staying the country.

The national union, especially on a large contract, essentially means that player has a mortgage on that position again especially so if if that person is the skipper.

Its gets even more concerning when you have two players who are world class in that position, because you de-motivate one player because he sees that signing as that he needs to change position or being a secondary player. Rather than pure competition by the virtues of our favourite form of social organisation... capitalism!

Caveat as to why this hasn't been the worst thing in the world though is that David is retiring.. it is Liam Wright and Fraser McReights problem now.

Hi Liam Gill we miss you too.
On the other hand, long term lucrative deals are one of the few tools we have left to keep the best players we have playing in the country. Even on 6 million he could have done better in Europe or Japan.

Yes, it gives him an unfair advantage when trying to retain his position, but it also means we get to keep one of our better players.

Not a chance in Hades.

Australian rugby pays over the odds.

They were dumb enough to make one fella the highest earner in the World - it's only fortunate he turned out to be a bigot and won't likely see out the contract.

10. Michael Hooper – £570,000
9. Nicolas Sanchez – £580,000
8. Ma’a Nonu – £600,000
6=. Steve Luatua – £650,000
6=. Dan Biggar – £650,000
5. Aaron Cruden – £680,000
4. Charles Piutau – £1,000,000
2=. Dan Carter – £1,100,000
2=. Matt Giteau – £1,100,000
1. Israel Folau – £1,150,000

we get to keep one of our better players.
When chasing huge money, they genuinely should have let him go.

Let's say a French comic book reader wanted to buy out his contract right now. Take it in a heartbeat.

Stats seem pretty dated.

Owen Farrell got signed up to a 750k pounds p/y contract in 2017 as an example. It'd also be pretty amusing if the Blues were paying Ma'a nearly a million buk.

Despite the almost universal hate for the bloke in Aus, he's actually one of the best in his position in the world and i strongly suspect he could get more overseas.

It's doubtful he's even the best in Australia.

Yeah, that was in comic book issue notes

It’s clearly a subjective conversation, and I think both sides have justifiable reasons to argue why they think player ‘x’ is better then player ‘y’. People just need to accept that it’s a subjective topic, and concede others will hold a different opinion on it and not let their pride get hurt when someone prefers one over the other.

Its my understanding Folau was closer to 1.15 million aud per season, not 2.1.

I can see why Hooper was signed on a long term contract.

Pocock at end of Carreer.
No one else close to him
Australian Captain.
Critical to his franchise.

It was a good move.

Notwithstanding this has nothing to do with the Reds 2020, surely everyone on this thread knows that Izzy's previous contract included substantial payments from third parties, and that reported number includes the Japanese contract which he never took up or earnt.

If Hooper left for overseas next year we would have been bemoaning the loss of two world class backrowers in the space of
12 months, and outside of POOPER the other backrowers really aren’t of world class quality yet. Plenty of prospects coming through the ranks for 2021-2023, but the Wallabies still need quality for next year and Hooper is without a doubt a quality player.

Nope & nope. What is does is stifle competition and incentivise other players to move elsewhere as their aspirations to play international football have effectively been destroyed. Form is meaningless.

/Back to QLD rugby.

Wellllllllll, Liam Fucking Gill and Sean McMahon would beg to differ.

We have this giant gap between ranks because those two went overseas. Thankfully Hooper has been largely injury free, because with Pocock missing so much game time, there was a chance we could have been heading to a RWC with an open side with only 1 cap to his name.

Nah, he's played 60 tests - even though that rule will be exposed as a fig leaf when they try to get Kerevi back after barely playing 30 - so coach Cheika (see what I did there?) could get Hooper back from his overseas cash gig for a couple of Bledisloes in 2020.

I probably wouldn't even bother if someone else pays his $6 million+ price. Let him chase the money. Or, if they'd signed a three year deal, he'd still be at the Tahs until 2021.

Pocock's 'retirement'? Suspect he might still be playing OS next year, like Gill, McMahon, et al.

Anyway, my last post in this thread on overpriced 5-year contracts. :) Back to the mid-priced 4-year Reds contracts.

Anyways, hopefully McReight fulfills his promise and we end up with a 6 million dollar man riding the pine.
