Reds 2020

I am so saddened for Aus rugby.

Is Rodda at Brumbies just for 2020 or is it something more meaningful?

If he ends up at the Brumbies isn’t that the epitome of throwing the toys out of the cott? He should never be considered for another leadership position at any level.

I should add that if this comes to pass then Thorn needs to be looked at. Your best Forward and wallaby for years to come can’t be allowed to walk away without an investigation as to why.

Yes emanating no doubt from the ARU.

The ARU should stick to its mandate and leave QLD rugby to the QRU.

Why would you be so narrow minded not to look into this? You do know QRU only survives by the grants provided by RA.

You might disagree with the current leadership but it doesn't mean that the proposed model is wrong or not worth investigating.

If it crushes the mind-boggling self serving implosion of NSW rugby it works for me. But to be honest, QRU would be the last union that needs pulling into line. They're doing fine, the major problems are elsewhere.

Reading Pandas article again, despite the headline he then says that Rodda hasn’t even spoken to the Brumbies. However, what seems clear is that Rodda, and probably the other two, are pretty unhappy with the Reds set up. Rodda could just as easily end up at the Tahs or Rebels but I don’t really care as long as he stays here. Presumably Hockings and Lucas are going through the same due process. If they end up at another franchise then they have to give a player back to Qld right?

People seem to be happy when they go to Brumbies, but if all these continue as is, how do they have room? Enever, Douglas, Frost, Swain & Neville. All quite solid.

Rebels surely as DESPERATE for a quality lock and a leader with Phillips and Jones going.

Brumbies have Swain and Frost longer term, though with Neville, Enever and Douglas contracts ending there could be room for Rodda, especially if someone off contract will head further south...

And all the backrowers. Those rolling mauls don't pack themselves. ;)

And does any team have adequate compensation for a World XV tight forward that they’re willing to part with? At this point I’d be happy with a washing machine for Hockings and Lucas but you’d want at least 75c back on the dollar for Rodda.

After I don't know how long we were finally seeming to put some effort into building a 10. There's been several attempts, one at least built a great player. But building a true 10 is different.

There is the old adage when building a rugby team the first bloke you procure is #3. The second is his back up.

Now I know hooker is going to feed into this discussion at some point but very very soon you need that 10.

Losing Lucas is losing our future. Or at least what we thought was our future. At any rate it isn't good.

Adequate compensation? QRU have no bargaining power in this scenario. They certainly will be on the wrong side of any deal proposed.

Also world XV is a bloody stretch. Rodda wouldn't be in the top 12. Off the top of my head NZ 4, SA 3, Eng 2, Fiji 1, Ire 1 and Wal 1 better locks playing for them.

Do we think this situation is as simple as Rodda missing captaincy, Blythe seemingly ahead of Hockings, and Isaac not locking down 10 or 15?

I hope it isn't that simple.
If that’s the case, they’re not the players we want to be the best performing Reds team of all time. If they don’t have the confidence or drive to prove they are the best man for the job, then bon voyage.

I think they have a fair bit of bargaining power. They hold his contract for the next few years.

Take a look at another competition where unhappy stars and trades are more frequent such as the NBA. If a player is unhappy with the organisation, they hold them out of play until they can find what they believe is an adequate trade (or just stop them from playing until their contract expires and lose them for nothing). Granted that approach isn’t really in the DNA of Australian sports but it seems appropriate here. Rodda doesn’t want to play for the Reds? Fine, give us something for him or he won’t play professional rugby for three years and lose value.

How can they do this without paying his wages?

Hey Phil, think your missing the point, They now don't hold his contract for the next 3 years as ARU and QRU have broken it by Compulsory making them take a 60% paycut or no pay at all, Think the Israel affair broke the ARU think what this will do, Let them go if they want to, will be the cheapest open long term,

Our contracting system doesn't work like it does in American sports. The Reds don't have the ability to trade his contract.

On top of this as Rugger Mate points out, he may be able to be released from his contract entirely due to the COVID-19 situation.
