The former model used in NSW was to separate the professional team from the NSWRU. The idea being that the employees of the two were largely unrelated and had different KPIs etc. The Waratahs paid a licencing fee to NSWRU of about $1m a year. The setup was done partly so that there was a future possibility of injecting private equity into the Waratahs etc. It didn't happen and they reverted back to it just all being under the NSWRU umbrella (although I believe the Waratahs still trade as a separate entity wholly owned by NSWRU).

On the whole I think a lot of what needs to happen is that a lot of the back office staff for each union/pro team should be centralised because it creates better efficiencies. They are all too small to be able to effectively handle all the back office functions with the necessary levels of expertise without being overstaffed and too expensive.

It wouldn't be about taking away the QRU's responsibility for running the game in Queensland. It would be about trying to free up more of the QRU's budget to be spent on rugby rather than administration.

Lachlan McCaffrey coming out in support of the Reds trio today in an interview. Below is an excerpt where I believe he totally misses the mark with his argument;

“I understand the whole loyalty thing in sport, but in any other industry or job — say you’re a banker and you get put on the JobKeeper or you get a 65-70 per cent pay cut, and a different bank offers you a job where they’re paying 100 per cent of your income and you can buy a house or get ahead in life — no-one in society would judge that person,” McCaffrey said on the Big Sports Breakfast.

First, the way sports contracts are structured and lock players into long term deals is fairly unique to that industry (and yes before any of you internet nitpickers jump in, obviously some industries have different clauses and contract etc. but I'm speaking broadly). The point about going to an employer who offers you full salary totally ignores the fact that these blokes committed to their current contracts for an extended period and isn't a realistic comparison, except Hockings, he can go.

Secondly, that glorious job at full pay, currently doesn't exist. Yes there is the likelihood that Rodda would get offered big dollars to play overseas and there is hope for Lucas and Hockings to do the same. But unless they're planning on starting their own competition and swimming to Japan/France/USA, they won't be going anywhere right now and I doubt a contract has been tabled.

Really liked Rob Penney's take on the "Picone Three" earlier today. Shows a broader approach than just the tahs.

"Let’s just hope Brad and the group can (reach) some sort of solid resolution.

"I saw some really wise words written by Scott Johnson in the last 24 hours. They’re very important to Australian rugby and let’s hope they can resolve the issues they’ve got.

"We certainly wouldn’t want any of those boys leaving the country and not being available to represent their country at some point."

"If they want to go, then they go. If they want to stay and be part of something which hopefully is going to be really good going forward and rebuild the game here in Australia and leave a legacy that's really proud - or they can be really proud of - then we obviously want them to stay and be a part of it and that's awesome."

Completely agree. Really like the attitude in cricket. Was speaking to an employee of Qld Cricket once and she was very clear in saying she doesn’t work for Qld Cricket, she works for cricket in Qld.

I’d like to think all rugby bodies could be so aligned.

Do we think this situation is as simple as Rodda missing captaincy, Blythe seemingly ahead of Hockings, and Isaac not locking down 10 or 15?

I hope it isn't that simple.

Is it just me, or do you think that if someone gets so upset about not being picked as captain that they want to pack their bat and ball then they're demonstrating that they are maybe not captaincy material? Surely he can't have that sense of entitlement?

I think securing a big contract in these uncertain times for rugby in this country would be a big contributer. As I said before, they won't be the last
