Hearing a couple of locks and a utility back have been stood down over pay disputes.

that's significant news. Our locks are all big names. Rodda and LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) have had some contracting issues in the past. All very curious

Yeah would prefer not to say who at the moment and see if the mainstream press pick it up or whether there is ability /preference to keep this in house until resolved.

Interesting to note who represents the biggest name on this list and who I think represents one of the others too. Don't think it is a co-incidence.

QRU Media Release: Queensland Rugby Union Stands-Down Izack Rodda, Isaac Lucas and Harry Hockings

The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) has stood down Izack Rodda, Isaac Lucas and Harry Hockings, following discussions with the three players and their agent.

The QRU made the decision following notification through the players’ RUPA accredited agent that three of his clients were unwilling to accept a reduction in pay and their nomination for the federal government’s JobKeeper subsidy, notwithstanding RA and RUPA‘s recently negotiated player-payment reduction agreement.

The decision has been made with the support of Rugby Australia.

QRU CEO David Hanham said: “Many industries in Australia are facing the same circumstances as sport in this country and the majority of our people have agreed to reduced hours under the federal JobKeeper legislation, which is assisting businesses such as ours through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We understand this situation is difficult for everyone and individual decisions need to be made to protect the long-term viability of Rugby in Queensland.

“As we have outlined before, these conditions are necessary at present and allow the QRU to create a financial bridge to the other side of this pandemic.

“Unfortunately, we have had to take the decision to stand-down three of our players. Given the recent negotiated player-payment reduction agreement, this was not a situation the QRU had expected to face.

“As we build towards the likely resumption of community and elite Rugby, the QRU remains focused and on-track to deliver on its three goals during the COVID-19 period – to ensure the health and safety of our people, to protect the financial viability of the QRU and to ensure the safety and viability of our clubs.”

Rugby Australia Director of Rugby, Scott Johnson said: “This is an unfortunate situation given we have an agreement in place for the interim period while the game navigates the COVID-19 situation.

“We want the players to remain in Australia and honour their contracts with the Reds and Rugby Australia. We are aware they are looking at their legal position, but we hope this can be resolved with the players as soon as possible and we will keep an open dialogue with them.”

Seriously, the number of people in all walks of life who do not understand the financial landscape has changed so dramatically for at least the short to medium term astonishes me.

Does their agent not understand that his players have not and will not be generating the content and revenues that his players were enjoying a share of. If the revenue pie shrinks so does the same % of the piece of the pie. And the old chestnut that they can go elsewhere such as UK, Europe or Japan still has a substantial question mark over it for next season.

I think the players should also be consulting a little wider than their agent right at this time.

Geeez, their manager has really backed them into a no-win corner here. The leagues overseas aren't operating and for Lucas and Harry, why would any club pay a premium for them? They've now lost all bargaining power by not having a club so they J-League and European clubs will only offer you peanuts.

@Getwithme

Ultimately the buck does stop with the players. It's like a Principal in any commercial negotiation hiding behind and blaming their A Hole lawyer while they claim blameless status. Bullshit. They know what they are doing ( or maybe they don't ) but in any case they are rolling the dice at a time where it is pretty questionable to take that path (to say the least)

Bad decisions by these 3 gentlemen.

They better really back their talent. I don’t think there will be a lot of overseas money on offer.
Certainly an odd time to try to play (or have someone behind the scenes playing) silly buggers with contracting.

This is made exponentially worse by the fact that Rodda is considered a leader in the dressing room. Their agent has alot to answer for and i can only imagine the rage Thorn is in at Ballymore right now.

Tinfoil hat time - lots of us surprised that Rodda didn't get the captains call up. Could the influence of his manager played a role? Sounds like he (Picone) is jumping at the opportunity to get these guys out of long term deals and onto some greener pastures with fatter pockets, but that doesn't really exist at the moment.
