Lots of questions today. What’s the story behind Alex Horan heading off to Japan? Did QRU not have a place for him? How does he compare to Campbell at fullback?

Is the salary cap $5.5M for the squad (30+) including development players?

Yes, I believe the $5.5mil cap is still in affect this year same as last. Where it all goes out the door is with the RA/Wallaby top ups etc.

For next year however I'm not sure anything has been communicated. Might depend on getting a certain broadcast deal sorted first :)

Not sure exactly but think he was basically WTS for the reds. Heading to the sunwolves means he'll get game time and time as a full-time pro. Depending on how he goes might come back into the reds squad next year.

Guys - you need to avoid posting discussions which include the results of other games in non-match threads for 24 hours at least to give people a chance to watch them on replay without finding the score.

Also remember that even for developing players (mainly our U20 guys that have signed long term deals) that they benefit from RA money from a 'war chest' designed to hold onto young talent. So Reds seriously benefited from that in addition to top players whose salary is also shared with RA 'top up' money.

Only 2 years - 2021 & 22. Assume he'll get extended to the WC and beyond if he does well.

Reds aren't picking up the whole package.
That’s more than Quade was on. Let’s hope he finds that white line more often than not. I hope the Reds still have some money left for a few of these young guns moving forward.

Been watching him for a few years now and I see something in him that I don’t see in a lot of rugby players. Picone is his manager so I hope that Cordingley is right on top of that one.

7 of the match day 23 are signed through to 2023, the only players in the match day 23 not signed beyond 2020 are:
-JP Smith
-Hockings
-Paisami
-CFS
-Ed Craig
-J Nasser
-S. Malolua

I'd say they've done a good job locking up the young guns thus far..
Still need dollars to secure all of these players too.

thats if they want to secure all those players.

Ed Craig is only there for injury cover, CFS could be replaced by Vunivalu, Maloula is capped for Samoa so shouldn't t be in the squad anyway IMO. Jury is still out on Nasser.

Paisami, Hocking and JP Smith are the 3 which need to be kept, with JP Smith the most important out of the 3.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Reds second half performances are worrying, and the 'young guns' are starting to feel the heat big time. With the prospect of a likely loss against the Crusaders next week, how long before the blowtorch is applied to Brad Thorn's reign? I'd suspect he's on shaky ground.

Totally agree. Other than the obvious 3, we still need to replace the outgoing. If we want to win games those replacements will come at a much higher price tag. There’s a fine line between depth in a team, salary caps and retention of players who want to start every week.
Rotation / resting players is smart coaching, but this needs to be executed with precision. At this point our prop and halves depth doesn’t allow for a seamless rotation. The coaches are bringing a substandard bench on at critical points of the game, and evidently it all goes down hill.
I only watched snippets of last nights game and waiting for the replay, but reading the match thread I am filthy at some poor decisions.
