Year 11 at 12 as well. Was very good. Kept Nadolo honest at Nudgee when he played 12. Didn''t play 7 until Aus Schoolboys

Don’t believe that’s the case. He was a 7 who filled in at 12 one season for school when they lost a key centre through injury (the fact he did all of Quade’s tackling helped too).

"The world's most successful franchise is actively poaching Australia's finest schoolboy talent...."

Followed in great detail by an explanation of the fact that the kid's a kiwi & was never going to do anything other than go to a NZ team. Oh well, if things don't work out for Sam at RUGBY.com.au I reckon he'd fit right in at the NZ Hurld, certainly give GPaul & CRattue a run for their money.

Didn't play that many seasons and that 1 season werent they premiers? Churchie 1st XV has a history of not knowing where to put buff guys. I knew a kid who played 2, 7, 9 and 12 for the churchie 1st XV...in the same season. Another played 7, 12 and wing. That was only 2 years after david left.

Wonderful story. David played 7 there except the year in the firsts he was asked to play 12.

I think the whole article is to rebuff the narrative the RA is asleep at the wheel and letting our star schoolboys be poached from elsewhere.

I agree with you that the starting hook is completely over-egging the pudding.

I think it's better than putting out an emotionless press release explaining why he wasn't signed or saying nothing and letting people think what they want over the news stories that a Queensland schoolboy has signed with the Crusaders.

Nah that was year 12 (2005). He was injured year 11.

He played 12, because they had another very good seven.

In 2004, the 12 was a bloke called Herman Porter.

....... anyway.

Rebuffing one narrative by creating a false new one is lazy journalism at best.

"Despite approaches from QRU & RA, kiwi-born schoolboy star Campbell Parata has elected to return to his country of birth where he will join the Crusaders, the World's most successful rugby franchise."

You could then cite Pete Samu as evidence that the kid's isn't necessarily lost to Australia for all time & if you wanted to point out that the Crusaders have a history of turning talented young rugby players into very very good mature rugby players. It's not that hard, really, but I guess it's not as easy as blaming the Kiwis

The Samu case is completely different to this one.

Think the title of that article refers to it as a situation of poaching but if anybody took the time to read the article the meat and potatoes of the story is the kiwi kid made up his mind and wanted to return home.

No idea how Pete Samu fits into this scenario

I suppose the reality is that Thorn (with all his coaching experience) has anointed Hamish as our 10 irrespective of the possibility of a better one in the wings.
At least Thorn is consistent. Consistently wrong.
He will never be a high quality HC until he matures in his thought processes in the difficult managing a professional group of players on as well as off the field

It is 2018 but I think you underestimate how much damage that would do to his employer if it happened for the third time.

I also think it doesn't really matter if you can fire him on the spot. The damage is done.

I don't think any other Australian side will be making him an offer.
I would agree the chances of an offer for hunt low given 2 strikes and his age. If he has an amazing nrc maybe some would take a punt to pick him up on the cheap with tight contract but yes chances are slim and no franchise going to pay him big dollars. Europe more likely destination for hunt.

1. That's the issue though, really: lots of people won't get past the headline & first para.

2. It would obviously have to be by a different route to Samu, but nothing about this precludes his return to Australia: kid might wake up one cold & foggy Christchurch morning & think "fuck it, I'd rather be getting some sun on the GC".

He's not eligible for Oz once he goes home though right?
5 year once he gets on the plane back to the gc is a very long road!

^^^^^^^ in many ways yes but in some ways not so much & certainly no more misleading than "Kiwis are poaching our kids!"

WoB, you are correct, though I don't think such a big issue. Compare this kid and his background, against Tupou and it's just not an issue of Kiwis doing wrong by Aus.

Problems from NZ on Aus in rugby happen elsewhere.

Got some good oil today re TSS 10;

Third year first XV at TSS. Starting Ozzy schools 10 last year. No interest from any Australian sides. Crusaders signed him before the start of the season. Was keen to stay in Aus. Asked not to be considered for any rep reams. ARU cried foul after he was signed.

Take that to the bank.
