Reds 2019

What we need is a third tier to develop all this untapped potential so we don't have to sign yesterday's heros- oh, wait

McIntyre won two NRC titles in a row at 10 and it didn't seem to develop him for Super Rugby much at all

Edit - though I see he had 20 games for Agen in the Top 14 last year so hopefully he can build a nice pro rugby career

So Miller has changed roles to Chairman in the last few months, i thought previously as President he was not involved in the decisions, but are you saying he has had a hand on the tiller in this Reds debacle for a much longer time?
I thought his appointment was a good thing, a smart guy with a rugby and business brain who has been successful in both. Bringing in fancy new ideas and looking outside the carpark, overseas in fact, for a new CEO!!
I am now very concerned if his tenure is going to be business as usual.

I am very rarely dismissive of rugby players, but I just never saw what this kid offered, even at U20s.

Stewart is a long way from being a good 10 at Super level.

Will he make it, I don't know.

Great defender but his game management needs to improve bigtime. Given a few years he make get that aspect. Another wait I'n afraid.

I just heard about the 10 from TSS, signed by the Crusaders. Seriously, that says something about the Reds (and Tahs, Brums and Rebels and RA). Presumably this kid must be good and we let him slip through the cracks.

A lot of young players are opting to go to NZ to develop regardless of what's on offer in Australia. Fair enough, to.

Currently (and he is definitely getting better each time he plays) his game management isn't there yet (hes only 20, so no surprise) and passing skills are unrefined, 2 things that are absolutely crucial for a super level 10.

If he needs to refine his passing skills as a flyhalf at 22/23 - then it's already too late.

Campbell Parata is a New Zealander isn't he?

It certainly makes it harder to compete when the player is interested in going to NZ. Whilst I'm all for signing supremely talented high school kids it's crazy to get in a bidding war for them, particularly if their first choice is to go elsewhere.

Passing is one thing you definitely can improve over time. It's repetition under pressure. Owen Farrell is a prime example of someone who is a considerably better passer now than he was when he first came on the scene. Had a propensity to drag the ball behind his runners especially in set piece scenarios, was quite rigid but is now a fantastic passer of the ball.

I think Stewart's passing is good, certainly has a long flat pass that is accurate. I think he has missed some guidance in development as a 10 - too much diving into rucks which means your 10 is out of position in the next play. His D is great, but that's not high on the list of key attributes I would look for in a 10. An advantage, but not enough to sell the role in the absence of the rest. Stewart needs to learn game management - who at the Reds is able to teach it?

Basically, for any 10 coming through the ranks there is a weakness at the Reds in training. Were that resolved I think Stewart could be really good. Without it any 10 coming through can only develop by osmosis, hence the need for an experienced hand who is unbridled by poor development skills at the Reds.

Matty T had an issue prior to leaving Aus of being knocked out fairly regularly, yet no mention of it when he joined the Rebels.

I have no problem with Barnes returning, but he should in no way displace Stewart from the 10. Barnes is there as a back up and a mentor. Stewart needs time and experience at 10, none of this shuffling around the backline. He showed some promising signs during his time at 10, let him continue to develop.
Yeah I’d just be concerned Barnes would be knocked out one or two games into the season and the Reds would be paying yet another player to sit on the sideline.

I think we need a 10, an a journeyman style one would be fine, because if Stewart goes down, or his development does not get to the point where he can be consistently effective, then we are stuffed.

Overall Australia is woefully thin on decent 10's that can step up.
If only there was a test-match quality 10 in Queensland......... One with a couple of hundred professional games under his belt, who has shown his ability to beat the best in the world.........

That's an interesting conversation given that we took the BBC 10 from reports, and I believe he is more highly touted? Have no idea in reality though. Wonder if we spoke to the TSS bloke?

Was a flanker till year 11 I think.

Slipper actually played alot of 10 at TSS growing up believe it or not.

Po obviously played 12 in year 12, despite being a 7.

Rugby.com.au has just put out a story which has a lot more detail.

Long story short, RA nor the Reds were never likely to be able to sign him.

Year 11 at 12 as well. Was very good. Kept Nadolo honest at Nudgee when he played 12. Didn''t play 7 until Aus Schoolboys
