Has Brad Thorn shown enough in one year with the U20s to deserve a promotion to full time Super Rugby assistant?

Just hold fears of another legend player taking a long time to find there feet in the coaches box ala Larkham. I doubt Thorn is going anywhere in the long term so think the Reds need more experience to back up Stiles. Perhaps Foley?

Well he already spent time with them..and with the likes of G.Smith (future coach) and Moore and Stiles putting the bulk of his time with forwards not sure a fulltime assistant coach for the forwards would be warrented (especially for the cash strapped reds).

I think they should go for Wisemantal - but would he swap backs coach at montpellier (dream town coz its pretty and you have tomane and nadolo about to rock up) for the Reds (struggle street)

Read somewhere...maybe this thread haha that Gilmore could at least have a heavier involvement (like Thorn)

Head Coach (forwards) - Nick Stiles
Assistant Head Coach (Backs) - Wisemantal
Assistant Coach (forwards) - Brad Thorn
Assistant Coach (backs) - jason gilmore

would that be feasible? not ideal and quite green but so many of the players developed under Gilmore (u20) and now have Thorn as their mentor. Would make sense to increase their involvement to continue the young players development, hand in hand complementing the wisdom shared by experienced players like quade, moore, smith.

Imagine the team huddles, you're Tupou, about to run on in the 3 jersey...one side you got Wallaby Captain Stephen Moore, on your other side you having rugby legend George Smith, you have wallaby stalwart slipper looking serious, and japan stalwart/kamikaze Hendrik Tui looking angry, fellow PI wrecking ball Houston there too, standing tall and confident are the first choice wallaby pairing of Simmons and Douglas........Then...staring straight in your eyes, giving you the biggest 'dont be a softcock' speech of your life .. is the man..Brad Thorn.

This thread isn't the place for amateur erotica.

If it is Stiles, then congratulations to him. He is more deserving than O'Connor, with at least a track record of NRC success with most of the playing group.

However under Stiles, I worry about the continued over emphasis on set-piece and lack of desire to use the ball in the gameplan. This is proven to be a losing formula, and if persisted with, will surely yield disastrous results. I hope Stiles had absolutely nothing to do with the attack & general structure this year.

Forwards are not a problem. The existing senior guys plus the new signings mean we have a very good pack.

The worry continues to be the backs. It will be less of a worry if Cooper returns. Essentially they (with the exception of Kerevi) have been just poor and certainly not up to Super standard. MOC has lost the top job because of that fact.

The important aspect that Stiles (after he is announced today) needs to address is "culture" and "man management" of players. He needs to engage with them and I think he has the players backing, moving forward.

A couple of early wins and the culture grows quickly.

Good luck to the bloke.

I have to disagree on that assessment that the forwards are not a problem. Often during generally play after a few phases they are at sea, struggling between breakdowns, overcommitting to rucks, weak ball carriers at first reciever, making decisions to throw poor passes, dropping pill etc. It just seems to fall apart so easily.

Within the pack there are great players, Gill, Tui etc. but as a unit they are disjointed. Neville at first reciever standing flat footed and getting smashed was a pet hate of mine this season.

It's not just the performance of the backs but the persisting with poor performance when other options were available that I don't understand. Guys like McIntyre and CFS weren't performing while players like Duncan P and Laloifi sat on the bench and came on with 8 minutes to go.

When they were forced to play Duncan P through injury - surprise, surprise, he did a great job, even out of his natural 12 position.

If it had to be a carpark choice, I think this is the best option for the Reds and for both coaches. Stiles definitely deserves the nod over MOC, and MOC hopefully now gets the Force gig which will be a chance to show what he can really do when he has full control. Nobody will expect too much from the Force immediately so any progress will be positive.

Agree Waterboyrugby. Scrums & lineouts have been relatively strong, but there is plenty of room for improvement in the other aspects of forward play.

You're post above is on the mark - at super rugby the set peice is not the be all and end all. Having a well rounded attack with both intent to use the ball and to kick effectively to create pressure is just as crucial, if not more so.

Oh yeah - plus being able to defend.

My question mark over Stiles is whether he will make the necessary changes to the strategy/game plan.

I live in hope.

It is pretty clear that at any level of rugby now, the best teams are offloading a great deal and breaks are made through support play and keeping the ball alive by offloading.

This is an area where the Reds and in particular the forwards need to improve substantially.

This is certainly the area where the New Zealand teams and the All Blacks are miles ahead of everyone else.

I think if Cooper is back those forwards will need quite a bit of improvement, a decent set piece is the start, but a lot more dynamism, accuracy and work rate will be required to provide the consistent quick ball Cooper needs.

I think Cheika measures it as getting off your arse and back in play

You've got to be able to hold onto the ball going into contact before you can offload it! The amount of knock on's the Reds had in 2016 doesn't really lend itself to offloads when it's no longer in your mitts!

Can you afford not to have proven assistants? Saving a few dollars could end being the difference between a successful season and another poor one. The difference between a successful and poor season if the back end of this year is any judge is around an extra 10,000 bums on seats at home games plus increased sponsorships. So I think spending an extra couple of hundred thousand to get the assistant/s you really want is a small cost to turn things around.

Completely different but same. When I was a young fella and I made the step up from moto-x and bought my first road bike, I got some sage advice from a wise old biker. He basically told me that when it comes to helmets you afford the best you can get. I reckon the same would hold true here.

IMO, the suggested Gilmore move is premature. He should prove himself as say HC of the national U20s first.

http://www.redsrugby.com.au/News/Ne...ted-St-George-Queensland-Reds-head-coach.aspx

QRU’s Executive General Manager – Reds, Daniel Herbert said: “The panel and Board considered a number of strong candidates and ultimately determined Nick to have the right attributes to take this group forward.

He is a passionate Queenslander who understands the DNA of Queensland Rugby. He is an experienced coach who has proven to be technically astute and has a strong record of developing players both young and old. Nick is a good leader, who has turned the Reds set pieces into one of the more statistically dominant in Super Rugby.

“He has the strong support of the playing group, many of whom he has identified and developed.

“He has the backing of the Queensland Rugby Union and the Australian Rugby Union, including Wallabies coach Michael Cheika, who has committed to working closely with Nick to ensure his ongoing development and success as a head coach.”

What the fucking hell does understanding the DNA of QLD rugby have to do with being a good coach? At a time we need to move away from the perception of jobs for mates this is the first thing the GM has to say.
And also - Statistically one of the more dominant set pieces? That fills me with confidence.

Watch out Aussie conference, the spin machine is in overdrive, success is imminent.

Good luck Nick.
