I only watched 3 minutes because I'm rushing out hte door, but I didn't see it once. Can you give specific examples?
1:09 Jake takes his first step laterally and never fixates a drifting defender letting them swamp Ant where there would have been a lot of space otherwise because 12 was scared of Kerevi getting the ball and drifted too hard, leading to him sitting down when he tries to come back in on Ant and barely gets arms on him in time. Defensive error and magic from the centers creates something while Jake did them absolutely no favors here. His hips just never face the defensive line and he completely removes himself from the play by doing this. It's even fine for him to go more lateral as he's making the pass if he just takes two fucking steps forwards first. He's playing so far behind the line that there would have been almost no risk of him actually taking a hit and being tied up for the next phase even if he had squared up and been any kind of threat to the defense.
He's also passing off his inside leg here which is a pretty fundamental error (esp. off of a set play) for a guy playing Super Rugby. It leads to a weak pass and an even more exaggerated rotation of the trunk towards his intended receiver.
Good results does not mean everyone played well. (Even though in the clip before this he actually squares up before going out the back - lo' and behold we get an overlap and score a try, crazy..)
2:04 pretty much the same thing - catches the ball, immediately steps laterally off his back foot and then turns his hips out to the backline before passing. Also once again the defense provides real opportunity but this time we don't get as lucky and not much is made of the opportunity. I honestly don't know how Folau bit on that when Jake's hips were facing directly at the player he passed the ball to long before he made the pass. Jake is drifting so hard though that he actually runs in front of Samu and basically makes him a non-factor in the play, which the Tahs read well as they force the drift across onto the receiver, leading to him getting completely swamped by three guys instead of what should be been a half or possibly full break. If Jake had taken an angle
forward and across instead of across and across before dishing, this becomes an entirely different movement and possibly one where Folau gift wraps us a try.
He doesn't need to do some Quade shit and make miracle passes within kissing distance of a defender to make me happy.. but playing so laterally at first receiver is not conducive to fluid and successful attacking rugby at any level. When he does these lateral runs before dishing without fixing he's taking both time and space away from his teammates. If he's going to play that laterally he needs to just release the ball far, far earlier than he has.
Dead Ball Area did a great analysis of QC (Quade Cooper) playing for the Reds against the Lions/Rebels in 2015 and there's a few examples in here of him doing the same types of movements I pointed out above, except executing the movements far better at 10:
You can see pretty much everything I talked about happening at least once in that video. Coming up and committing defenders in the line on crash balls, going forward before going lateral, moving the ball quickly if you are going to just go lateral without going forward, going lateral quickly on wrap plays, etc.
Those are the first pair I remember seeing and there's other instances throughout the rest of the video of him doing the same thing. I don't want to write a 5,000 word post right now and I need to make food before the match is on so I'm going to end here for now.
