Whilst there is some good depth at backrow, there isn't much depth, Gunn is good but he didn't really stand out at a NRC level, Smith can't play every game so Gunn will really need to pick up his game.

As for blindside and number 8, well I think Timu has a big future but it's a tragedy he missed out on the NRC to re-learn his rugby union skill set, and whilst Korzcyke has the right physical frame I've only seen glimpses of him using it to his potential.

I actually think lock is the Reds strongest position, with Simmons and Douglas as a Wallabies pairing, Neville a proven Super Rugby performer and Tui and Rodda putting in very impressive NRC performances, it's going to be hard to choose who misses out in 2017.. I can't wait to see more of Tui at lock, he is a future Wallaby IMO.

Perhaps the Reds could loan Izack Rodda to the Rebels for a couple of months.

Tui will move on next season (he has to) and IMO so will Neville. Don't think he signed on at the Reds to ride the pine behind douglas. Ironically the team where he had the best chance as a starting player this year was the Rebels.

Why does Tui have to move on?
Neville probably will since he is off contract and only getting older, but Tui is only 20 and under contract until 2018

haha thats perfect H2C!

Quades little instagram stories just make me happy, seeing Moore, Houston, Douglas all in Red...all tingly about how many of my favourite players are going to be around the next couple seasons, and how we will have a proper balanced pack with experienced heads and up & coming guys mixed in but not getting thrown to the wolves.

Got 2 of australias best lineout men in higs and simmons
Got big bruising ball runners in Timu and Houston
Got a breakdown genius in Smith
Got an classic big man in Douglas
Super experienced front row leaders in Slipper & Moore
Plus weapon up and comers who couldnt ask for better mentors in Lui & Thor

Just hope genia comes back for 2018 and Gill comes back to replace smith in 2019. Hopefully they hide another queenslander playing overseas like a To'omua or Tomane in their suitcase. We could use a good 12 and wing.

Yeh sorry, was just kinda getting at, though we are pretty stacked with quality 2nd row and backrow depth, it actually makes sense considering the timing of contracts and the development of the ' 2nd tier' players.

Hopefully that means none of our up and comers feel the pressure to leave in order to get quality game time.

Schatz stayed at the Reds right until the end of his contract, meaning he either didn't want or couldn't pick up a Jap or Euro contract. Can't imagine he wouldn't be able to get one at say, a Pro D2 team next season, considering he's a capped wallaby etc.

Toolis is out at the Rebels for the season, they could do worse then to pick Schatz up as a medical replacement as he is a good lineout man, something they are lacking.

Schatz could be a good Luke Jones style lock, he's already got the skills assets bar scrummaging (though that is a big one).

If you're less ambitious (and most professional teams would be) he's always looked like a traditional 6 to me, despite playing mostly 8, which is a mould of player the Rebels lack. They have a lot of very good "misc' loose forwards.

Wouldn't be a bad pick-up, for the right price tag.

I heard that Shatz signed overseas after the Reds didn't want him, but the contract was dependent upon some injury recovery (which he suffered at the end of last season).

I don't know if he passed that test.

The bloke gave wonderful service to the Reds over the years so I wish him the best in 2017, wherever he ends up

Reg,

That totally conflicts with what I recently heard.

But I will take you at your word (as you have all the inside goss at the Reds) that Paraka is still at the Reds, training hard and be ready to be an important member of the Reds 2017 squad It's about time he had a breakout season (but still has Slipper and Sef ahead of him)

Go Reds

Absolutely. Great service during often trying times. All the best Schatz.

agree with everything except for Genia, I think Frisby will show his class with a good forward moving team and QC (Quade Cooper) outside him. Prior to Genia leaving I actually wanted Frisby to get a shot at starting as he had impressed.

Reg,

That totally conflicts with what I recently heard.

Mate I don't have anymore of an inside line than many on here these days.

You may be right. He was originally named in the squad ( http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/reds-reunion-2017-squad-announced/)

But he isn't listed in the squad now (http://www.redsrugby.com.au/Reds/RedsSquad.aspx)

I know there was some concern as to his application (on the training paddock and away from the field) so perhaps that's caught up with him. Leaves a little short at prop now. Kite and Vanzati now battling for the all important 5th prop spot.

Your last para about application and off field shit is exactly what I heard.

No benefit to anyone expanding on that further.

Fortunately the Reds have 4 good props already (assuming Thor continues with development) so the 5th won't get too many opportunities (without injuries)

Not sure if this is at all relevant but I saw Schatz (as in viewed him with my eyes, not spoke with him) in Brisbane just a few days ago.

If he was signed overseas would he already be with that team? Or maybe still doing rehab in Brissy.

I'm with you. Though I felt Frisby wasn't working to his potential at the end of last season, not being spoken about as a potential WB any where near as much as he was. Let's see how he shapes up but there is no reason to think he cant go far if he applies himself.

I'm concerned at the backup for QC (Quade Cooper) this season.

Hopefully he stays injury free - although I am more concerned with how he adapts his tackling style to the new high tackle laws..
