Since discussing previous matches is apparently banned from the match thread, just going to leave this here to remind myself of better times and get my hopes up of a return to something more like this, and less like last weekend. What a difference a few years makes.....

Because it's easy to counter, just don't move the ball backwards.. if you're not going to contest the maul you've just given the opposition the perfect set-up.
It's better than conceding ground the way it's being done at the moment. Give the ref the heads up, don't engage and let the penalties come or simply tackle the ball carrier. Most mauls are highly dubious in their set up at the moment anyway. Teams need to counter with smarts rather than going through the same motion and getting smashed.

Force maul was excellent - often illegal but they got away with it, probably because their set up was so strong

Given it's popularity lately, I doubt the attacking side will get caught off guard again and get penalised for obstruction.

Scoey, when I was a younger man, my team was running dead last and the day we took on the top team, the coach turned the ladder upside down and told us to go out and beat them like the table toppers we were. We did win that day, however did not win again that year.

I hope Woody does not try the same trick.

Reds haven't been the same since he left, even under Ewen..

IMO this is an excellent point, particularly re the whole evolution of the Reds since July 2011.

An absolute key to the Reds' massive revival 2010-11 was the _complete and well-rounded_ coaching group Link assembled and motivated in that period. Amongst others, T Taylor, Alec Evans and 'Chook' Fowler (though eccentric) were crucial support coach contributors in that golden period. This technical and managerial deepening of the time was one of Link's best achievements for the QRU.

Once this core team began to break up, as it did in 2012, the Reds consistency, game plan ingenuity, flexibility of execution and general attacking and defensive coherence were never the same again (to this day anyway).

Then the whole Australian S15 Conference began to improve from 2012 onwards, and what was thus needed was not home-grown hubris but an even further enhancement and deepening of the Reds complete coaching capability. This didn't occur.

Who walked under a ladder or broke a mirror???

We had such great luck for a couple of seasons, the ball bounced the right way into our hands, QC (Quade Cooper)'s line ball passes were allowed and not called forward, opponents spilled the ball straight to us rather than a knock on and scrum.

Love that video, and I have been inspired. Tomorrow I think I will watch the Reds win S15, I still have it on Foxtel!

I have the 2011 final on DVD. When I'm having a crappy day or the black dog is following me around my wife will sit me down and chuck it on. It never fails. I don't always save It for a pick me up though. It's good for any occasion really! :)

Realistically, it's hard to imagine how we could be as bad as we were against the Brumbies again this weekend.
I mean we could still stink, but I think we will see some improvement against the Force. ;)

True, but none of the bench seemed to even want to look in his direction. You'd think some of them would have had a sarcastic comment or two like, "Nice one James".

the angriest man in the team has just completed his angriest night on the field getting sent off as his beloved team is flogged by a record score and you expect one of his team mates to be smart arses to him?

I think the reply he is looking for is "yes, its obvious there is discontent within the team because the team wouldn't look at Horwill, all the players hate each other, Horwill hates RG, Cooper hates Hunt, the Reds are shit"...

The issue of who plays fullback and who plays fly-half isn't the biggest question this week, its how the Reds are going to improve the forwards performance from last week... If the forwards can't improve then it doesn't matter about who plays fly-half or inside centre.. Quade Cooper and Tim Horan couldn't win behind the packs performance from last week.

Thomson comes in for Browning/Shatz?
McDuling is reportedly fit again, so he should come in to replace Kotze.

Some positive from last week were 7 debutants for the Reds, Magnay went well given his age and development, Kerevi still looks to be in form and should be a weapon once on the front foot with decent ball.

I think you guys lacked urgency in the defensive line and people don't really rate him but Ant coming back in could be your biggest god send. I dunno where you play him.. for mine 12 and Kerevi outside him.

Which people... Because I rate A.Fainga highly... He has long been the defensive lynchpin of the Reds back line and if fit will start...

What about even Jim McKay? I've been rather unimpressed with Steve Meehan and wouldn't mind McKay back for the backs.

BTW, Wilkins is now running the defence as an assistant coach. Yet somehow it seems all the same as last year with no aggression. I wonder if Graham is doing to Wilkins what Link did to Graham: let them run the defence, but the system is from the head coach,
