Does anyone else think KH did enough to justify wearing 10 next week? JOC (James O'Connor) or Turner are more than comfortable covering fullback and I'd be inclined to give it a go. I thought he looked quite comfortable tonight
Yeah, and Duncan looked sharper when he came on as well. starting K and running Duncan off the bench could work until Quade gets back. they'll both get better with each game. I thought Pickle looked really good when he got on. Hope he is signed up for the next few years.

Thought Frisby tried hard but made a fair few mistakes off the bench. His dart down the blindside and straight into touch was just silly, and he gave away a few penalties unnecessarily as well.

Genia looks in much better form right now, looks closest to the Genia of 2011 than any other year so far.

Frisby played like Frisby does. Some very good things and then some extraordinarily stupid unnecessary things. Didn't look as composed as we would have hoped for a bloke that has been around a few years now. Still, he's a Super Rugby quality scrum half now so that's good for us to have experienced, capable back up for Genia.

As far as playing 10 last night...really I think K just proved his pedigree as an experienced, calm and highly talented footballer. He may end up being a useful stop gap measure, but I would still prefer to see JOC (James O'Connor), who has played 10 a whole lot more be our fill in of choice until Quade returns (backed up by Duncan, who looked better for the run last night). But if K stays at 10, JOC (James O'Connor) at 15 then I'd be fine with that too. With Kuridrani and JJT looking much more composed in their play and Turner to return our back 3 has just enough depth for one of them to slide up front for a bit.

Pigs were good generally last night. Shame about Fa'agase.

Faeo has played for Tonga A at least hasn't he? Wouldn't be eligible to play for QLD>
Are there any international development spots still available on the Reds roster? I'm not sure that A representation is enough to disqualify a player playing for another nation that he would otherwise be qualified to represent.

Kite should be the next in line, then Faeo going by the NRC. With Kite in Canberra, and Faeo maybe unavailable, THP is looking rather worrying as I doubt Talakai could make 80 minutes. First choice, third choice, fourth choice, fifth choice all gone. Shades of 2007, where Eddie Jones told a rookie prop coming off the bench to take a dive so the Reds could get uncontested scrums.

I have re-watched some of the game, and I have a few concerns still going into the first game of the season.

First, the positives: scrum was solid mostly for the starting pack, apart from the great shove for the penalty try, we pinched a heap of their lineouts, our attack from broken play was few dangerous, our forwards ground out metres through the pick and drive, and our rolling maul was very strong.

The negatives:
- on attack, we stood way too deep. Hunt was the main cuplrit, but other forwards and backs were also too deep, meaning that we often ended up 5m behind the advantage line.
- too much kicking, Hunt especially, maybe because of the depth we played at we lost ground too much, but generally we kicked away too much ball. This was mainly off phase play off static ball, off front foot ball and set poeces we tended to be flatter. Surprising as we had a pair of non-kicking wingers.
- manning up on defence, we were caught short a lot. For instance, Crusaders had half their team on a short side for a couple phases before getting it that way, and the Reds never even re-acted.

I thought hunt looked great, but he really didn't show enough to make me think that he is best used at 5/8. awesome defense, tough in contact, good boot. He did a good job in a position he hasn't yet mastered. I'd put him at fullback. Play JOC (James O'Connor) at 5/8; we have some good alternatives for wing

How do you Reds guys feel about the off season recruits and their injury histories?

I look at the off season recruiting the Reds have done and can't remember as good a recruiting in a year by another established team in the S14/15 era.

But the concern has to be both JOC (James O'Connor) and Hunt, the two biggest names (to Aussies, Thompson is the no1 get in my book) have had significant injury layoffs in their career.

JOC (James O'Connor) has averaged about 50% availability for his super franchises and Hunt managed 44 AFL games in 4 years (102 games).

I really think the Reds resurgence this year is hinging on who they can keep on the field. It seems like a high risk/reward strategy.

In Hunts defence he was not really suited to the requirements of AFL.

If Slipper decided he was going to become a marathon runner then I would expect him to get lots of injuries due to the work load.

This was very obvious, I doubt most 5/8 will have the skills of QC (Quade Cooper) to play a flat line but it was ridiculous how deep we were.

I would assume the Reds have at least one person in the stands who can see the game from above? Why was this positioning not fixed?

Is a deep back line an indication that the backs feel rushed for time to make a decision?

No point having a 10 positioning himself flat,if he doesn't have that style of play.
If you play flat, you are either a champ or a chump.
If you play a bit deeper, its a lot safer.
It doesn't surprise me in the least, that Hunt played that position in a conservative fashion, given he hasn't played 10 for quite a few years now.
I'm not even that confident he has that long flat ball, that you need when you play flat.

To fill the Quade gap until he is fit I would prefer JOC (James O'Connor). We have good wing cover to compensate and I would like to see Hunt bed down at 15 for the season. JOC (James O'Connor) can play the flat game well enough for us to execute an attacking style and build into a long season. This will make it more coherent when Quade returns.

People might be viewing Hunt as the miracle man but let's just bed him down into a regular position and let him contribute from there.

The backline will be interesting, do you pick Duncan on the bench so he gets some time on the field?

The make up of our bench will be quite interesting

My guess as it stands now and is likely to change. Assumptions are the following players are out injured:

Quade Cooper, Rob Simmons, Greg Holmes, Sef Faagase, Ed Quirk.

15 JJ Tualagi
14 James O'Connor
13 Samu Kerevi
12 Anthony Fainga'a
11 Chris Kuridrani
10 Karmichael Hunt
9 Will Genia
8 Jake Schatz
7 Liam Gill
6 Curtis Browning
5 James Horwill
4 Ed O'Donaghue
3 Sam Talakai
2 Saia Fainga'a
1 James Slipper

16 James Hanson
17 Ben Daley
18 ????? Some Tight Head Prop from somewhere. Phil Kite???
19 Marco Kotze
20 Adam Thomson
21 Nick Frisby
22 Ben Tapuia ???
23 Chris Feauia-Sautia

Not sure how Taps is placed. I guess Duncan could come in for him if Taps is out, but I'd also seriously consider Campbell Magnay.

No McDuling Reg?

I doubt they'd go with both Magnay and CFS on the bench, they are too similar a player in outside centres / wings. Plus, I don't think Magnay is quite ready yet. Give him another year or two.

I would expect they'd go with Taps/Ant/Paia'aua where either Taps or Ant starts with CFS / Kuridrani / JJT, depending on which 2 of those three starts.

It will be a close call between Browning and Thomson as well.

Isn't Simmons just being rested to give that shoulder time? I thought he's okay to play.

Agree on Magnay, he's a talent. Only going to get better the more he plays at the highest level.
