If he plays 15 as we mostly expect, I hope the Brumbies are a bit more attentive to him than they were to Adan Toua (?) last year. Probably he was the difference between a win and a loss in that game, but really he wasn't seen again practically all year.

I am interested as to whether you have a reason you think he won't start at 15, or did you just want to state again that you think the Reds will struggle.

I'm interested as to how he's still posting here at all, but that's not my job.

I'd still love to see Hunt at 12 but JOC (James O'Connor) at 14 almost locks Karmichael into 15 with the squad we have, given his attributes. His big boot will be enormously helpful for us with him at 15.

We have a second ball-player at 12 in Tapuai and we really were hurting for a rounded, quality 15 last year.

Agree with all of this.

Plus I think from a Wallabies perspective (I might getting a bit ahead of myself) we could benefit from developing another world class fullback, one with a strong kicking game. We are a bit exposed if Folau goes down (touch wood)

Pity. His comments were so well thought out and insightful.
I thought they were. Anyway, pretty keen for 2015 to get underway! Trials starting in the next few weeks!

I figure Genia is gone. I hope Cooper will stay, but it is probably unlikely - or if he does it may be to play sevens and try for the Olympics which will be a genuine option for a few of these guys - albeit probably not a comparatively lucrative one.

I can't see the movement of players slowing down - although there will always be more the year after the World Cup. However, from where I sit, the solution to this has to be to strengthen our base of players. If you take League as a comparison, when one well established top tier player leaves, there is already 2 - 3 likely replacements coming through to the national level. I've got no doubt we do have the talent if we broaden our base, get better at talent identification and improve in player development. Essentially we appear to be in a 'money ball' situation where we need to get more while spending less. The quality of our recruiting, coaching and development frameworks will be crucial.

PS Maybe you should have chosen a less obvious name the second time round. The Phantom seems appropriate.

I'm not really sure how Australia handles the Olympics but I'd wager a guess at fairly seriously. Third party sponsorships for the first year of any form of rugby in the Olympics since the 1920s could be pretty significant.

Especially if the Loig crowd join in to support their nation over their sport of choice, which I think many will. Especially so when you consider how 7s isn't all that much different in a lot of ways from the touch footy that is so closely aligned with Rugby League at the youth levels.

I don't really know either way - but I am guessing that the money these guys could earn in Europe and Japan will still significantly outweigh what will be offered to the majority of guys in the sevens program. Happy to be wrong though.

I do think though that a number of guys - and Cooper may well fall into this category - will be willing to forego some income for a chance to play in the Olympics.

If memory serves, the Las Vegas 7s last year slightly outperformed the All Blacks game in Chicago in TV viewership numbers.

If 7s can appeal that widely to a nation that per capita does not play much form of footy at all.. how well could it do in Australia when it's the only option for both codes of footy fans to watch at the Olympics?

Not digging past the first page of results this late at night but the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony drew 2.41 million viewers at the first go, around 6-7am in the morning and then 1.81 million when played later.

It's likely to be reversed in 2016 though, as Rio's time zones are very unfriendly to Eastern Australia. Could be a bit of a damper on things.

It also depends a lot on what we get shown. Generally the coverage focuses very heavily on showing every bloody swimming race they possibly can as Australia traditionally performs well there. As a result, our top swimmers are the ones that get the most endorsements out of it, particularly around the time of the Olympics.

You're right that the viewing times at least live are going to be horrendous in Australia. The only events that will take place live in prime time will be things held early in the morning (which is I guess things like rowing, swimming heats, marathon etc.).

I'll have to make sure I don't give away any spoilers.

Hopefully there are some brave souls who stay up, usually those are the drunker of the match day threads when they do occur that late.

Is there really no IP ban option for Xenforo? Or is brumbies20 just Pfitzy or Moses having a laugh :p

There's an IP, but by default I think it just bans the user name - you will have to ask the mods. It's not hard to change IPs, anyway.

This could well be another issue in the FTA v Foxtel battle. If FTA get the Olympics (which is to be expected) they will likely only concentrate the coverage on one channel, while if it went to Fox, you can bet they'd have three or four dedicated channels covering just about every sport you could wish to see.

Olympic broadcast rights for 2016/2020 have already been sold, Channel 7 have the rights.. It hasn't been released yet but it's likely the rights for certain events will be on-sold to Foxtel..

Channel 7 have been showing the Australian Open tennis live on two channels for the first time ever.

Hopefully they continue that for the Olympics. More options are always good particularly when the FTA networks spend half of their Olympics coverage interviewing people and talking in the studio.
