I wonder if there's anythought to bringing Stannard home?

Sure we've got Lucas, but not much else. And I really think we need to consider worse case scenario and we lose Quade. Lucas at the moment is probably the only option to do that, so a legitimate back up scrummy is key. Lucas may end up being fullback anyway, who knows?

Noddy, I am of the opinion that Lucas is the second best half in Aus. While I was happy he signed on for another 2 years it surprised me. I would love to know what was promised as it seems as if he will not get a shot at proving himself bar injury to Will. He is a very complete footballer in attack and defence and only needs 5 more kilos. As I have said previously his efforts for the Aces down here were quite inspirational, especially defence. From what I have heard the Reds wanted him rather than Kingi as their back-up 9. I watched his young brother play us down here a couple of weeks ago and he has the same lack of fear and a great pass, but I think he will need at least another year of development. The reds may have to go to their extended squad

It's a lot less then 25'000 to break even, however it's not a set figure, with the larger crowds come greater expenses(staff, security etc)...

As for Lucas, I think you will in fact find that Link plays him a lot at 15 in 2011, reds lack on a alternate playmaker to quade was highlighted in the later half of the season when quade was targetted sucessfully

Hanson, Anae and Slipper have been signed for 2011..
Guess that spells the end for Weekes and Edwards

yeah, they're going young aren't they? No sign of the Shepherdson signature previously suggested?

The QR Reds have added a complete front row to the Queensland squad for next year’s 15 team Super Rugby competition.

Head coach Ewen McKenzie announced the signing of 2009 Australian Under 20 Player of the Year James Slipper, who made an impressive debut for the Reds at prop this year; 21-year old Reds hooker and Queensland University Premier Rugby captain James Hanson and QAS Reds Academy prop/hooker Albert Anae.

“These guys are emerging players in their positions and two of them (Slipper and Hanson) have already played their first games for the Reds this year,” McKenzie said.

“Slipper is still only 20 but he came off the bench for two games at tighthead prop and started for us at loosehead against the Highlanders in the last round and played very well. ‘Chibba’ (Hanson) didn’t get the same opportunities but he was there in the mix at the end and worked hard during the year as a member of the squad. Albert is also only 20 but he shows a lot of promise at both prop and hooker, so that’s another useful option for us.”

McKenzie said the three were already playing influential roles for their Premier club sides, the Gold Coast Breakers (Slipper), University (Hanson) and Sunnybank (Anae).

“These three all make a difference when they play for their clubs, which is what you want to see from younger Reds players; dominant performances against guys who have usually been around a lot longer than they have.”

Slipper said he was “over the moon” to be elevated to the senior squad and would now re-set his goals for 2011 after getting a taste of Super Rugby in 2010, including focusing on developing his ability to play on both sides of the front row if required.

“My goal now is to get as many games as I can in 2011, whether in the starting side or off the bench. I just want to be in the team,” Slipper said.

“I definitely also want to be a player who can play both sides (loosehead and tighthead prop).”

Slipper acknowledged the help he’d been given by former Breakers coach and renowned scrum doctor Alec Evans and said he was looking forward to working closely with him at the Reds, where Evans is a consultant coach.

Hanson, who captains University in the Premier competition, sees parallels between the Reds and his club side, who have won six of their first seven games in 2010 after a number of disappointing seasons.

“We’re both young sides who have struggled a bit in recent years but we’re now starting to show what we can do. It’s been great this year leading the boys around (in Premier),” he said.

Hanson said his goal now was to put in a “massive pre-season”, working hard and learning from forwards specialists McKenzie and Evans to give himself every chance of being selected for games in 2011.

“It’s very exciting to secure your future for the next two years with a young team on the rise like the Reds. Getting a taste of Super Rugby this year has made me even more hungry and determined to get into the team and play more games.”

With just two specialist hookers in the squad following the retirement of Sean Hardman, Anae could easily find himself picking up game time in 2011, but for now he’s happy to just be joining the senior squad.

“It’s an awesome feeling. My goal has always been to play for Queensland and wear the red jersey. Hopefully I’ll be lucky enough to get some time on the field next year but all I can do is work hard and see what happens.”

The 2008 Queensland Colt of the Year, Anae toured Ireland and France at the end of 2008 with a Reds development squad, where he was first thrust into the hooking role because of injuries. He is one of the strongest players in the Academy and Reds squads, lifting 175kg for one repetition in the Reds’ “King of the Gym” contest earlier this year. Anae returned to Ireland last year as a prop in the Australian Under 20 Junior World Cup side.

Asked whether he has a preference for hooker or prop, Anae said: “I don’t really mind. I’m still learning in both positions so we’ll see how it goes. I’m getting a lot of help from my club and from guys like (former Reds hooker) Olei Avei and (Reds prop) Greg Holmes which has been great for me.”

They are young, but sheesh they are of pretty good pedigree, I have my doubts about Anae, but they other two look promising..

I just hope they can keep PAE as well

lets work this out:

FULLBACK:

WING: Digby Ione, Luke Morahan, Dominic Shipperley, Kimani Sitauti, Rodney Davies

CENTRE:Will Chambers, Anthony Fainga'a

FLYHALF:

SCRUMHALF:Will Genia, Ben Lucas

BACKROW:Leroy Houston, Lei Tomiki, Scott Higginbotham, Liam Gill, Ed Quirk, Jake Schatz

LOCK:Van Humphries, James Horwill, Robert Simmons, Radike Samo

PROP:Ben Daley, Greg Holmes, James Slipper

HOOKER: Saia Fainga'a, Albert Anae, James Hanson

Obviously some flexibility there with some players. I think have 5 spots left.

One will be hopefully be Hynes (fullback) and one will hopefully be Cooper (flyhalf). The three remaining? I still want a THP. We need an experienced one, as we can't relay on Holmes being there. Although it was interesting to read that Link reckons Daley could be a THP?

Two others? Has to be a back up fullback and then an inside back (10/12) right? From within, possibly Aiden Toua and Benny Tapuai or Jono Lance I guess. I'd really like Tapuai to stay, but then again he'd be good for the Rebels.

Of the available players from other states there is not much. Dane Haylett-Petty or Cameron Shepherd perhaps? From the troubadours list perhaps Scott Daruda? Steve Kefu? Chris Siale? From club footy perhaps Ant Sauer, Dallan and Damon Murphy? Matt Brandon?

Out of all of those lads, the best options would be the in-house ones, Tapuai, Toua and Lance.
Other than that the Murphy brothers would be adequate. Shipperley can play fullback as well as center and is a fairly big lad. DHP is the worst player running around, we don't need him.

If we need a flyhalf I think Matt Brandon is the best in the country not on any books. Alot better than Tim Walsh.

Do we think it was a Growden stuff up, or do we actually think that Link is considering Daley as a tighthead? he is quite small for a loose head as it is. Slipper would seem more logical, however I guess Daley may be more technical?

Third hooking option concerns me.

To be honest fullback doesnt overly concern me.. .Aside from Hynes, we also have Lucas, L. Morahan and Davies who could all play 15, however if we are going to sign a fullback then in the Academy you do have Simon Morahan, Mitchell Felsman or Aidan Toua.

Areas of concern are obviously the 10/12 position, Tapuai would be the natural fit here, however like you said Noddy, it would make sense for him to head to the Rebels. I guess that leaves Johno Lance, he seems to have fallen out of favour a bit but he would make the most sense considering he has been in the academy for so long.

I've heard down the grape vine that Hynes is definitely staying, which is good. I've also heard that Quade is likely to stay.

yeah, that's been in the media. With regards Cooper though, it may be out of his control however.

Cooper will be fine, and he won't be going anywhere.

In regards to Jono Lance, I don't think he has fallen out of favour I just think he was put in the academy at a very young age. He is only 19 turning 20 this year.

"heard" ages ago that Quade actually signed but for reasons only known by persons unknown was not made public as yet - interesting
same with young slipper - just as interesting with Weeks heading south.
don't know how long Albert A and hanson have been signed but great news these young blokes stay at Ballymore for the upcoming resurgance - actually has already started.

What I like about the Reds this year off the field is their signings are those of a smart coach/administration. Take last year for example, end of season they sign 3 outside backs from the academy and 1 forward, what's the point of signing "scorers" if they never get the ball. This year, more forwards then backs signed, finally addressing Qld's biggest issue of the last 3 years.

Southern Districts (Sydney club rugby) are quoting Sheperdson as a Red for 2011. I can't vouch for the accuracy.

Seven wins from seven matches
BY BRAD FORREST

SOUTHERN Districts usurped Manly's impressive Shute Shield record when they trampled over the experienced Eastern Suburbs side 36-15 at Woollahra Oval on Saturday and made it seven wins from seven matches this season.

The win topped Manly's effort of six straight recorded last season.

Super 15 players, the giant former Australian representative forward Radike Samo and centre Josh Tatupu (two tries) starred for the Rebels.

Despite driving rain during periods of the second half, Souths cast aside an indifferent first half to put their opposition to the sword.

They extended their 10-7 lead with two tries in as many minutes to tall Scottish-born centre Gareth Morton, after first Samo broke two tackles and then Tatupu brilliantly set Morton up again.

Although Easts managed to hit back, that was the end for the home side.

Souths No. 8 Ita Vaea broke tackles to send Tatupu over, before, as full time second rower Sitaleki Timani crashed through and that man Tatupu ran off his shoulder for the pass to score his second. Half Nathan Sievert was on target again with six goals.

Man of the match Samo said of the second-half effort: "We got back to playing the way we can. It is always hard to beat Easts, so it was a good effort by our boys.''

The next stage for Souths is to fit in some of their Super 14 stars, now that the South African sides play out the final. They will wait to see if NSW Waratahs centre Rob Horne and second-rower Kane Douglas are included in the Australian squad for upcoming games. The others in line are props Dan Palmer, Nic Henderson (Force) and Guy Shepherdson (signed by Queensland Reds), along with Brackin Henry (Australian sevens), although it will be hard to see them all fitted into this winning side.

Souths return home this Saturday and host Warringah.

What about Jack Kennedy too? Is he signed for next year (even though he wasn't impressive this year).

Does anyone think Quade will actuallty go to jail over the laptops? I had my front door crow-barred open that same day and a couple of laptops and a few other knicked. I actually wish Quade had hit my joint - I'd have my laptops back and probably a signed match jersey by now...

But seriously, what he did is the stuff of a good behaviour bond, if it gets that far. Not serious jail time.

Wasn't there some sketchy insinuation of a spiked drink or something?
