REDS PROP JAMES SLIPPER TO APPEAR BEFORE SANZAR JUDICIAL HEARING

Reds prop James Slipper will appear in front of a SANZAR Judicial Hearing in Cape Town on Monday 4 April after being yellow-carded for a dangerous tip tackle on Lions hooker Bandisa Maku during a Super Rugby fixture in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Slipper has been cited for an alleged breach of Foul Play Law 10.4 (j) that relates to lifting an opponent off the ground and dropping or driving him into the ground whilst his feet are still in the air. The incident occured in the sixth minute of the match.

The hearing will take place in the Western Province Rugby Union Boardroom at 10h00 on Monday and will be chaired by SANZAR Judicial Officer, Advocate Rob Stelzner.

Havent read all comments but did anyone else think that the lions player jumped into slippers tackle which made it worse - he was already off the ground a touch when slipper started the tackle.

Fainga'a did a similar thing when he jumped into a Lions player and there was a hint of a spear tackle, but it was play on.

At the time I thought it was more just the high/low tackle combination that did it. I can't say that jumping ever crossed my mind. Mind, I only watched it on the live telecast last night, so I can't say with certainty.

I think Digby (I think it was Digby) may have had a bit of an impact on the tackle too. Regardless, I suspect Slipper MAY have been 'rested' for the next match anyway.

The player was neither dropped or speared into the ground. He was placed lovingly back down.

I think that might be overstating things. He was certainly dropped, he was not speared. Its a borderline yellow imo, and certainly not a reportable infringement.

So does this mean the South African citing officer (is it still Freek Burger) has decided that it was worthy of a red card? If so, why did he get a yellow?

I think it was worthy of a yellow. But I also think its a bit rich for the saffa commentators to wax lyrical about it when every other weekend we see a saffa player attacking the head at the breakdown which in my eyes is just as bad, if not worse, an offence.

Digby definitely had a part in the tackle

He did, I won't call it a jump, he skipped into the tackle. his feet were about 6 inches above the ground when he hit James Slipper. I would say that this won't help him at the hearing. Would probably get a week I would say.

Shit Happens, if he gets a couple of weeks so be it. It was a nasty tackle.

BTW credit to the Lions player for just getting up and getting on with it. He wasn't hurt and did not try some bullshit acting performance like others would of.

I have to say, I can not see any real mitigating factors in that tackle - it was bad. Do I think Slipper thought "I'll lift this bloke and drop him on his shoulder / neck"? No. But lift him he did, and the landing was bad. I cannot see how it is "less worse" than Sidey's. I don't know why anyone lifts anyone else in a tackle these days - we see perfectly legitimate tackles where some one is half picked up and put on their arse being penalised as dangerous. There is no reward, just risk.

As bad as it will be for the Reds, he should go for the same as Sidey - 3 weeks. There's no place for speer tackles in the game. There's a real risk the recipient would never walk again.

The Reds season could very well be decided over the next three weeks. Stormers this weekend over there and then back home against the Bulls and the Waratahs. That's three bloody tough games!

Let's hope this weekend doesn't knock them around too much, and I hope McKenzie has the opportunity to fully utilise his bench. The homeground advantage wont be as pronounced against the Bulls next week, given the Reds will be fairly tired after an SA trip, and the knock on effect to the week after will be interesting to see.

We will have a much better idea of the Red's 2011 chances after April 23rd.

If they can get 7 or more points from the next 3 games, then it won't be too bad, but I suspect they are aiming for 8 or 9.

I agree Spectator but what makes next week against the Bulls interesting is that the Bulls may have the stuffing knocked out of them by the Crusaders. It could be the battle of the wounded. What I am sure all Reds supporters are encouraged about is that what is a squad with good depth on paper is really meeting that expectation in real life. It's great that we can rest our wounded and role out some fresh in form repalcements.

It will be what the Reds make of it but jees we are in a good position.
