Shame to see Horwill out but I also think this enforced absense will help the side but not for the same reasons and the "cakeboy". Surely it must be time to give Liam Gill a crack against the Brumbies and to also play specialists in the other loose forward positions? Hopefully when Horwill returns, it will be as a lock.

I could be completely wrong but I think the Reds forwards will pick their game up with Horwill out injured. Might be a misconception of mine but in past seasons I believe they tended to play better when Horwill was out. I get the feeling that some of the other forwards are willing to sit back and let Horwill carry more of the load when he's on the field. Nothing to back this up. Just a hunch.
That's rubbish Cakeboy - but welcome aboard anyway.

I'd be interested as to why you think the hunch is rubbish Lee.

I don't think cakeboy was suggesting that they do it on purpose, but as a subconscious thing. Take an analogy from another of my favourite sports. If you were opening the batting and Sachin Tendulkar was next in, you would probably be less upset (from a team point of view and again, subconsciously) in getting out knowing that Sachin was coming in next. There would be a tendency to think "oh well, Tendulkar will get heaps..."
There is also the "do it for big Kev" type mentality as a possibility that might get them to muscle up.

Not saying I necessarily agree with cakeboy, but as a theory, there is merit that with your forward leader out, you may very well step up or to continue the analogy, value your wicket that little bit more.

Horwill does the hard work, but also has an x-factor that none of the other Reds locks (and few TH locks in the world) have, such as making the odd turnover or just being in the right place at the right time. Horwill seems to be a natural footballer who just does instinctive things. He is head and shoulder the best lock in the team, probably even the best forward in the team, and will be missed. Sure, the other locks can lift in his absence, but it won't be the same as him being there.

Completely agree. Although he has not been playing lock - which is a whole 'nother debate! :)

The theory though, is that maybe the others will play better than they have over the last 2 weeks in trying to cover for his absence - which it goes without saying is a big loss (his absence that is).

Thanks Tank for explaining my point more cleary then what I did. I was not bagging Horwill. I would have him in my team any day of the week and definitely would prefer it if he was not injured. I just think the other forwards may give that little bit extra as they know they need to step up to fill the huge hole he leaves. As I said it was just a hunch I got last year and I think (though my memory is definitely hazy) the year before.

Thanks for the welcome Lee. Very nerve racking posting for the first time. I've popped the cherry now so should be easier to post something if I ever have anything enlightening to say.

I think it had more to do with my reading of it; and anyway my saying it was rubbish was made in a friendly way. I have written a considerable amount of rubbish myself.

And you don't have to wait until you have something enlightening to say. There is no need to be different from the rest of us.

Reds A side for the curtain raiser v the Brumby Runners:

The QAS Reds 2nd XV is (from fullback): Aidan Toua, Kimami Sitauti, Ben Tapuai (c), Simon Morahan, Dom Shipperley, Matt Brandon, Ian Prior, Jarrad Butler, Lei Tomiki, Ben Coridas, Tim Buchanan, David McDuling, Guy Shepherdson (vc), Albert Anae, Kevin Davis. Reserves: Andrew Coady, Shon Siemonek, Sam Denny, Mitchell Wade, Blake Enever, Mat Lucas, Joel Faulkner

First appearance for Joel Faulkner (OZ Schools 2009), another Tiger (yay) and Mitchell Wade (OZ A schools 2007 and Uni). If anyone is at the game would love to see a report. If McDuling puts in another big effort he will have to be close to promotion.

Anyone know the Runners line up?

Wade played a few 'A' games last year an went ok. Guess the backrow depth has kept him out thus far.

Reds lose Hynes for a month

The 28-year-old suffered a recurrence of the issue that ruled him out of the majority of Australia's Test season in 2010 in last weekend's heavy loss to the Waratahs in Sydney.

He has now been pencilled in for arthroscopic surgery next week, preceding rehabilitation period. The Reds have not placed a timeframe on his return.

The Queenslanders have also lost skipper James Horwill for this weekend's clash with the Brumbies in Canberra, although the second-rower is only expected to be sidelined for two weeks after suffering an ankle knock.

Is anyone going to the function at the Normanby tonight? Does the $49 get you a steak dinner plus all the beer/wine you can put away for 2.5hrs?

If so, that is a pretty good deal!

Well Reds now heading into the bye with 2 wins from 3. Points are on the board so not really concerned they weren't the flashiest of wins this early into the season. Now basically have a month to fix the flaws in their play & gameplan before the competition really heats up.

This next month is crucial. Really need to win all of their next 3 matches against the Rebels and Cheetahs at Suncorp, followed by the Lions away. I know the Cheetahs match was scheduled on a Saturday afternoon to give them a bit of additional time to get to South Africa and get ready for game 1 over there. Hopefully that strategy pays dividends as I don't think we've won 4 matches on the trot for some time. It is possible that the Reds will be flying high on around 26 points after Rd 7 and hopefully have the fans and themselves excited & full of confidence.

But then the tough stuff starts in Rd 8 against the Stomers away, followed by the Bulls and Tahs at home, then the Hurricanes away. Reckon the Tahs match will decide the Aussie Conference and Reds have a tougher run into it playing the Stormers and Bulls, as opposed to the Tahs playing the Force & Blues. Hurricanes probably not the easiest side to run into after those 3 either.

Will be very interesting to see how it all plays out - hopefully win at least 50% through that mid-section and start the run home still in or near the finals positions.

Go the Reds!

Good summary Tangawizi.

Too be honest the Reds are going along nicely and the bye has come at the right time. Big woop, we lost to a stong Waratahs side in Sydney, a lot of teams will this year. Beating the Brumbies in Canberra for the first time is a huge step forward for this team. Who cares if we are winning ugly at the moment, we have the rest of the season to work on other aspects of our game. My only concern at the moment is injuries to Horwill and Hynes - if they can re-join the team before mid-season it is going to help the Reds greatly as we start to take on the bigger teams.

You would think the Reds can win their next 3 and collect some bonus points too - I think the Lions away will be the hardest as they can score tries (but luckily for the Reds they also let in a lot of tries, but then again, so do we). I'm not too concerned about taking on the Stormers and Bulls before we tackle the Tahs at home. This will be a very good warm up and get the troops battle hardened for the big interstate match. I can't believe we are taking on the Bulls again at home after returning home from South Africa - a win is on the cards if we go by history!

Still a lot to look forward to this season.

GO THE REDS!

I'm sure a Tahs supporter will be along in 5 minutes to point out the irony in the comment 'who cares if we are winning ugly at the moment'.
