What a great game of rugby. Starting off as a disinterested observer I starting yelling for the Rebels some time after oranges. What inspired this adventurism and commitment? Booting Cippers? KB (Kurtley Beale) at 10? There are a few "first choice" Rebels out injured who've played respectably this year, JOC (James O'Connor), Saffy and Lipman to name a few.

If the Rebels can play like that for the rest of the season, look out!

Great game. Great to see Morty back. He may have lost some edge but I still have a soft spot for the bloke.

All I can guess in support of the touch judge was that the Bulls player who last touched it was already out. If the Bulls player was out of play and Vuna was the last person in play to touch it, it would be a Bulls lineout.

If the Bulls player was in the field of play then the touchie got it completely wrong.
He was in the field of play, bad error by the touchie.

Entertaining game though, and a great effort by the Rebels. I liked Beale at 10.

Beales long range passing is getting better. His left to right is still notably weaker though.. surely an off season of practice with a tire hanging from a tree isnt too much to ask...

It was a great game for the spectator. The only thing that really got to me though was how lazy Vuna was without the ball.
There was a moment in the first half when the ball was put over the top by the bulls. Kingi rushed back to collect it but Vuna just slowly jogged back allowing Ndungane and I think Engelbrecht to swamp Kingi rather than sprint back to lend support. That sort of thing can cost you games.

Defense? Pfft! Who needs the shit?

Something wrong with the Bulls defense around the ruck.

Anyway. First game on tour, 5 points. Now it gets hard for the Crimson mob.

Haha yeah that was pretty easy for the Bulls wasn't it? They must have been taking it easy defending tonight because they knew they'd take it by 6 whole points.

Yes. If you compare playing to the Rebels against the Bulls schedule for the next three weeks it was relatively easy.

The difference in the coming weeks for the Bulls will be three teams who are able to shut out close games and who won't leak tries like the Rebels did.

In general I am amazed that people called last night's game a good one. I suppose seeing the Rebels score tries is a novelty so in Melbourne that is considered "good rugby". There hasn't been much to cheer about so a bonus point loss is probably something to buy a round over.

The lack of quality and composure in defense from both teams was at times laughable.

But I guess if you have to combat league and AFL you define quality rugby as being directly related to how many tries are scored as opposed to the quality of the basic disciplines of the game.

But for the quality of some of the tries the game was pretty rubbish. For the most part both teams were made look good by the opposing defenses. I could go on and on but if anyone though that both teams kicking out of hand was good then I give up. Ball protection at the ruck was piss poor.

On that performance bot teams would have been slaughtered against the top three or four sides on the log.

Anyway I expect more from my team and if that is considered good rugby then neither of these teams will win another game this year because if they defend like that they won't.

That was up there with Highlanders vs Crusaders as the game of the season so far. Credit to the Rabbles for backing themselves. I kept screaming TAKE THE POINTS, but they ended up scoring most of the time anyway, so made me look stupid.

At the game with my good lady wife and have not enjoyed a contest so much for quite some time. Just a cracking game and the boys were understandably down afterwards.

One thing; while the final lineout was a bit of a ref mistake, it would be a foolish person indeed who says that cost the Rebs victory. I saw at least three lineouts from 5 meters out of the Pinks tryline that the Rebs coughed up.

Great game and a great advertisement for the code in Melbourne.

PS: Goodnight Luke Jones!

While I have to agree with Blue about the D from both sides, all I can say is Go Rebels You Good Things.

For me a good game is about flowing rugby and a hard fought game, be it low or high scoring, and provided it meets the Sam Ikin test of not being a kickpointsfest.

What I enjoyed most is seeing the whole team pull together. Our forwards are starting to gel, save lineouts (nod to Bulls there tho) and the backs buzzed around Beale. Phipps must have flipped some kind of internal switch, was rapt with his game.

Lastly hope Jones isn't suspended too long as he wasn't the only tackler, but I have to say the fall was a text book example of what we don't want to see in rugby.

I agree with others about the defence to a point. The Rebels have had an issue in their squad that is slowly coming to light. They have not been a cohesive squad and IMO the cutting of Cipriani was the first step to fixing that culture if what we have read is true. Defence is so much about attitude once the techniques are learnt and structures followed. There are still a few changes to be made and improvements but the Rebels have huge potential IMO. The Bulls should be more significantly worried about their performance in defence, they are a very settled squad, why did they trot out that performance? Jet Lag?

That being said there was some wonderful Rugby on display last night and I agree with the earlier comment regarding the Tahs play. If the Tahs did execute like the Rebels did in attack consistantly instead of on one or two occassions every three or four games they would be unstoppable given their defensive structures. The Rebels attack was brilliant in some instances with players running onto passes and dynamic support play. I enjoyed that game immensely. Thanks Rebels and Bulls.

We are a very long way off being settled.

Blue, how long have those players been in the Bulls system, including the CC and juniors. COntrast with the Rebels which are 18 months old and have a new coach and systems this year from last. There is a massive contrast between the two sides, can you tell me you were surprised by the Rebels relatively weak defence? Were you surprised by the Bulls performance in that area? That is the point I am making, we expected the result and the points to the Bulls, what most of us didn't expect was the Rebels to run them so close scoring so many tries in such a manner.

No. My point is that in general terms the Bulls is not a settled squad. The Rebels is surely is not the baseline.

I was not really surprised by the Bulls defensive issues. The problem is that we are building a squad and a new system and with that a new defensive system (which by the way is quite different to the way we defended in the past).

That was the 2nd best game of the season for the Rebels and one of the worst from the Bulls because they had their worst defensive effort of the year.

Because of defensive issues it wasn't a great game, but it was an exciting game, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

As an Aussie I especially enjoyed the improvement in the Rebels attack. It was so because the ball often was passed close to the tackle line, which meant that when a receiver of a pass had aimed himself near a gap he made metres when he caught the pill. Sometimes I think it's best to pass not to a player but to a gap on your side of the tackle line and hope your mate is there to catch it. It worked for Bernie. Just kidding, but you know what I mean.

Was good to see young lock Neville start in his first Super game and run down one of the Bulls backs early on. That's pretty agile for 202cms and 120kgs. This is only his 4th year of rugby; so he has missed a few things in his rugby education such as taking restarts and running low like Sharpie, but it was a good start.

He'd give some of the backowers a run for their money over 40 metres.

Beale played well at flyhalf. I think he will do as a stop gap for the Wallabies because he will have a bit more class outside him and won't try to run so much. There's only so many circles you can run around before defenders get the idea that you are a one man band. If he is to stay in the position at the Rebels he needs a runner shooting up next to him on most occasions to get the most out of him there, and ideally another offering himself on the other side. Then he can fix opponents to be in places they don't want to be.

Last night he was just the guy to do the flat passing that I talked about above. He's good at it: not as good as Quade but very good, especially off his right hand. It meant that there was danger for defenders as soon as the support got the ball. Before Beale, the Rebels, like the Tahs, were doing moves too far away from the enemy. Like pulling faces before a fight, it didn't signify much.

Another thing that KB (Kurtley Beale) has to learn from QC (Quade Cooper) is to pass the ball chest on to defenders which makes him harder to read. He also has to loop more as he did incessantly at school when he surprised defenders, even the 10th time in a game.

I thought that the Rebels ruck attack was very good and that it surprised the Bulls a bit.

The Bulls were impressive in their kicking game: they made the ping pong, attacking ping pong, with Basson and others contending for a lot of their kicks. Their restart kicks were nearly all contestable whereas those of the Rebels, were 5-10 metres too long, just like their ping pong kicks. Also the Bulls' mauls were mostly very good compared to the Rebels amateur hour efforts.

I though that Stander had a terrific match as did scrummie Hougaard, particularly when the Rebels had the ball. Steyn was like old Naas: just playing from the back pocket like a sniper though he gave a bit of cheek on the run last night as well. On the other hand I didn't notice Spies until the interview at the end of the game; not really.

But geez - the Bulls would not have been happy with their defence. I'd hate to be protected by those fellows in the laager.
