Gill was very good but argument can be made for McMahon. Gill probably in front as he did much of the work with only a tight 4 support. Thompson was right off the pace tonight as well.

How does a nation which produces more top line rugby players per capita than anyone else, produce so few top line referees?

Scrum penalties a lottery, Genia thinks he can push the opposing half out of the way at every scrum (never penalised), breakdown all over the shop, doesn't want to give a penalty for a collapsed maul 5m out so he calls it a ruck and gives Rebels feed (should have been Rebels penalty or Reds scrum) and I think he was the only person at the ground who thought the Reid try should have been disallowed for a forward pass - even the TMO was trying to tell him.

I thought the Rebels deserved the win, an absorbing game to watch, but even as a neutral I was frustrated - if I supported either of the teams I could well have thrown something at the TV.

Reds fans, I know exactly how you feel, I remember only too well not so many years ago that watching the Waratahs was exactly like you're seeing this season.

Current ref management are obsessed with producing referees which are former players. NZ did it with Glen Jackson and Irish with Alain Rolland. ARU spending too much time copying rather than developing. Only decent and consistent ref at the top is Angus Gardner and he is getting better. Hoffman: former player. O'Brien: former player. Seems to be a trend at top end. NZ currently fast tracking former player Jamie Nutbrown and former Red Nick Berry being fast tracked in Qld.
Just coz you played at the top doesn't mean you can ref it. But don't tell the Aru ref bosses that

Thomson has unfortunately been progressively giving less impact. As this has been happening he looks less and less satisfied with general performances each week.

JOC (James O'Connor) was completely overshadowed by Naivalu who must have been close to MOTM. On a few occasions he )JOC (James O'Connor)) was left stranded on the end of the line looking at multiple players coming at him, but he also missed quite a few one on one tackles and usually it was Naivalu getting the better of him.

KHunt was less than poor in his short time on the ground. He may get better, but any talk of him being a Wallaby at this stage is pure fantasy.

Gill and McMahon were both strong throughout, with Gill taking the honours for his turnovers.

Stirzaker was again below what is required at Super level. some are complaining here about Genia manhandling him at the scrum, but all half backs do that and it is up to the opposite No 9 to stop the pest getting at the No 8 picking up the ball at the back. Both Higgers and Colby were caught by Will tonight and forced into errors.

Being a former player has little to nothing to do with performance as a ref, but I don't think any ref wasn't a player at some stage. It isn't a new thing.

Same as coaches, every single coach I can think of except Alan Jones was a player as well.

All that matters is knowledge of the laws, fitness and most importantly an ability to impartially apply the knowledge of the Laws. That may be why so many top line referees have been ex-cops (and ex-school teachers).

On a serious note: perversely, the only recently recruited player by RG that looks even vaguely like 'value for money' is L Turner. His low angle long kicks for touch have been invaluable, and he at least looks like he assesses his next play quite carefully and executes many well.

By any standard Thompson, JOC (James O'Connor) and Hunt thus far look at best like glossy marketing statements way in excess of the revealed underlying product quality.

You obviously are not watching the same Thompson as I am. He was a bit ordinary tonight, but I think the Reds have had good service from him in the previous games. Other than that, I agree.

Kamichael came on with 12 minutes to go with 14 men on the pitch.

Give the man atleast ONE-FULL game in his position before the ludicrous comments come out.

While his touches tonight were poor, what would he have honestly needed to do to get a warm reception from the poppy-cutters? A length of the field Mortlock intercept? From full-back no less?

Yes, he is on alot of money. Get over it.

You'd expect a person getting paid three quarters of a million dollars to be able to accurately pass a ball though...... There's no beating around the bush that players get paid to play and deliver.

There's no beating around the bush that small sample space's lead to pseudorandom outcomes.

Really?? Look at the posts before, from my POV as a Wallabies supporter I thought PAE was hard done by and Slipper was hinging and rolling his shoulder in (elbow pointed to ground after binding).

I agree, I thought Slipper was done over a few times. He should have been pinged for collapsing a few times. Elbow pointing downwards and then folding.

Rebels still looked pedestrian and predictable. It looks like they have all the enterprise coached out of them and they play to a plan. Zzzzz

The discussion was about value for money. Not about whether he deserves a better chance to do his job. If you think the Reds have gotten their money's worth from him so far this year, you probably thought RG was right last week when he said they could make the semis.

There is nothing "ludicrous" about saying they haven't gotten their money's worth from him - even he'd tell you that.

I though the reffing at scrum time was a bit of a crap-shoot. But that's what it's become nowadays.

There was one scrum where the Rebels were all pushing square and moving forward and the Reds appeared to wheel away and somehow he found a penalty against PAE. It was wierd stuff - even by the lottery that are scrum penalties at the best of times.

Reffing is just like playing, you need to gain experience at the lower levels before progressing. Slipper played him for a mug last night.
