BIL seemed to be offside, but their defence was just so quick off the mark and stifled any chance of Rebels attacking. Burgess takes two steps before passing which does not help the backs much. Really dissapointed that they brought him in. It would have been better to blood the Ranga and allow him to develop. Still a fun night out

My analysis of the game:

The Rebels lost themselves this game. When you can't win an attacking lineout you're going to have a very hard time winning a game, or even scoring. The other thing that killed them was their poor kicking. The number of kicks they had go out on the full, not to mention the attacking options (why would you ever put up a bomb from a quick tap 30m out?!?!?!), really left me scratching my head. This game only served to reinforce my opinion that talks of Burgess playing for the Wallabies are extremely misplaced.

Positives for the Rebels: Inman was impressive in attack and defence. Delve looked great as usual. Saffy has a lot of mongrel but needs to be used less in an attacking role as he is just too small to be hitting it up in tight. Sidey is one of the best backs in Australia over the ball.

Lions didn't look outstanding but basically did enough to win. Their lineout was a country mile better than it was in Canberra. Their defence was suffocating as always and left the Rebels panicking. SOB needs to be the test 7. Faletau just never stopped taking hit ups. Tuilagi looked fairly lame apart from one good run/offload.

Now a question: I'm not usually one to try to pick on biased reffing, and there was certainly nothing outrageously bad, but it seems to me that the Lions got the benefit of the doubt in most things last night. For example, in both the first scrum of the game and the scrum that led to Connor's try, Hibbard popped up out of the scrum and yet the Rebels were penalised (or in the second case the scrum was allowed to continue moving forward). The other time I noticed it was in the rucks; the Rebels were pinged a number of times for the tackler not releasing, but the Lions got a number of penalties for the ball-carrier not releasing despite the Rebels player never having a chance to place the ball (due to never being released by the tackler).

I was really hoping Burgess had left his 2-step telegraphic pass in France, but sadly that is not the case.

Young Stirzaker though - wow. Some of his long range passes from the breakdown were spectacular. Hitting the receiver at chest height at super-sonic speed.

Yeah Burgess still takes his step and has the odd dodgy passes, but the guy is wonderful in cover and getting his pigs going forward as well as anyone

He and Stirzaker will complement each other

I also though that it was substandard. Crooked lineout throws should not be seen at that level. Small things which are allowed which should not be. Still not sure why Reid was sent off at the penalty try as he was hanging on the side. The culprit was someone in the middle of the ruck. Not my favorite ref.

Good game to be at last night, despite the result. The highlight for me was the headbutt administered by Cayden Neville on some poor BIL outside back around the 35min mark. Put a smile on my face and made a few BIL fans near me wince.

Didn't he sack the ball carrier, coming from the side?

Yea this got me confused too. I thought he came from last feet, remained bound and tried to get the ball. Maybe a cheeky penalty, but didn't think it was a penalty try. Looked like the Maul had stopped well before Jordy's pilfer.

Also thought the ref should have awarded a 'moral' try to Pat, but oh well.

Bring on the second test!

I think the penalty try was justified, because the Rebels did seem to have collapsed it. My whinge is when you cant nail the culprit, dont card someone who had nothing to do with the offence.

The replay I saw had Jordy trying to sack the maul when a Rebels player had alread bound and initiated correct contact, then entering the maul at the periphery, vaguely at the last feet, then edging around the side to sack a bound ball carrier. I don't think it warranted a yellow card, given the context of the match, but it was a cynical offense in my eyes.

For all of Woodward's edgy brilliance, he makes some really poor errors kicking out of hand. Too many times he's tried for too much on a kick and put us on the back foot. I guess you don't want to cruel his creativity but it has cost us too many times.

Burgess clearly demonstrated he has gained no extra skills during his stint in France.

That's something I forgot to mention. The Lions got away with a number of crooked throws. Maybe the Rebels should have picked up on this and started leaning a bit to their side.

As for the penalty try and yellow card; I completely agree with the ref. Ref already had advantage to the Lions for collapsing, then Reid attached himself to the side, 'worked' his way illegally around and tackled a bound ball-carrier while the maul was still moving (at considerable pace). Pretty clear cut imo. Reid's impact after coming back on the field was to knock it on at the base of a ruck (luckily the Rebels had advantage) and then knock it on cold out wide; a forgettable night for him.

Other point to note; boy can Farrell kick.

(Cassius88) isn't usually one to try to pick on biassed reffing, and there was certainly nothing outrageously bad, but it seems to me that the Lions got the benefit of the doubt in most things last night.

Add to those observations the penalty leading up to the lineout before the penalty try, "number 14 offside" at the ruck. He wasn't. No wonder a frustrated Rebel kicked the ball away (he shouldn't've, but.....), that was an appalling decision. As a former ref I find Pollock a bastard to watch, he's terribly inconsistent and pulls penalties out of his arse.

Was Jackson.

Wait a minute.. Jackson... Pollock... It's a bloody art conspiracy!

They did have a foot or two in front of the last feet a LOT. But the Rebels should have been smashing the pick n drive all night because the Lions tight five was swanning a lot.

Didn't see the game, just caught the highlights. Will watch it later once it's available to download. Apparently Lachlan Mitchell has been cited for a tackle on Zebo.

I remember that - would be a fairly soft citation as it's looked OK on replay. He lifted him, but didn't look like he dumped him on his shoulders/head. Zebo didn't look mad either...

Speaking of replays I couldn't help but laugh when, after Woodward's failed penalty attempt (from a relatively easy position) the cameras immediately panned to KB (Kurtley Beale) and JOC (James O'Connor) (who were sitting in the crowd). Cheeky dig anyone?

That looks bad. Mitchell is is real trouble here.

That could be 4+ weeks.

Or the judiciary could let him off. They are a bit like the French team; you just don't know what mood they will be in.
