Simply put, its not a community interaction activity, just a pre-season training camp venue.

Yep that’s what the press release said. Also says their main country rugby community stuff will be round 3.

As to taking an NRC game to Ballarat, what is your problem? It’s barely longer to get there from AAMI Park than it is to Frankston, and for people in the west it is closer. Imagine the Victorian Rugby Union using its NRC team to promote rugby in Victoria. Outrageous!

Ballarat is pretty accessible from the parts of Melbourne the talented rugby juniors come from nowadays (North-West).

The Rebels are also basing themselves out of a school that makes finals basically every year and has great sporting facilities.

The event probably pays for itself thanks to government funding, compared to a trail game in Melbourne where you're basically signing money away (other than whoever runs the Quins BBQ, because that's likely where they'll have it).

Anyone who things this trial game isn't a great idea is an idiot.

By the by, st pats have only come up to the first division rugby a couple of years ago from SECOND division , and the top rugby school in vic is st Kevin's and has been for fifteen years - but go Pats from BRat

I'm aware of that, I'm also aware since being picked up for 1st Div St Pats have finished in finals every year except 2017 when they finished one spot out of them.

A lot of this was due to scholarships, but St Kevin's 15 years of success are in the same boat. I also never questioned St Kevins' position at the top, so that whole rant was a little strange.

I didn't think it was a rant , sorry if it came off that way - I think you are putting too much stock in St Pats being a premier rugby school when in fact they are not , and they haven't "made the finals every year except 2017" because they have only just moved into first division and before that they were not in first division finals .

Fair point about it being pre-season and likely school holidays, but the agreement is also with Victorian Country Rugby Union, not just St Pats and includes taking a NRC game to Ballarat and running coaching clinics in Ballarat throughout the year.

For the reasons you highlighted about this being a strong sport driven school, it sounds like a positive step. I know if an AFL team we’re doing the same at one of the traditional rugby schools in QLD/NSW there would be raised eyebrows in the rugby ranks.

I really don’t see this agreement being a negative one, and perhaps it is an article for the sake of an article, but that’s not really a bad thing.

I cant disagree that the agreement is not a negative one, but the question for me remains is what does it do for the Rebels?

As far as I can tell the imperative of the Rebels is to get sponsorship and bums on seats to lessen the drain on the RA funding it requires. I cant see how this does that.

I just cant see how preaching to the converted (the few that are there) two hours up the road is helpful? As for any NRC games thats post season and about the Rising primarily (unless as we suspect just the Rebels using the Rising name).

Sorry, doesn't the NRC get played after the end of the Rebels season? This would help get sponsorship and bums on seat in the "past" how?
I think Rugby, and in this case the Rebels need to decide if they are a commercial venture looking for support for a team, or a group of missionaries on a crusade to spread the "rugby" gospel to those in distant parts.

I have no idea what you are trying to say here.

As to your point about commercial venture/rugby missionaries, why are they mutually exclusive. Getting paid to play somewhere or even having your expenses covered, within your home territory seems to tick both boxes. This isn’t like the brumbies playing trials in Melbourne - Ballarat is VRU territory.

You also to seem to misunderstand the logistics about travel around Melbourne and it’s near regional cities. If you live in the outer west, Ballarat is closer time wise than Frankston or Ashwood and a significantly easier drive.

Sure it should be the imperative, but they aren’t mutually exclusive... that’s my point and why everyone was taken back by your initial comment.. needing a sponsor shouldn’t stop an organisation going about their business in other departments.

Yes, much in the same way that Canberra is closer time wise than Paddington or Mosman for rugby fans in Sydney's west.

Just out of curiosity - what are the Rebels doing to promote themselves and the game in Melbourne, say anywhere between East Melbourne and Ballarat?

A lot of prominent billboards, fan engagement day on Southbank. Don’t read hard copy print media or watch live fta tv so not sure about those. Social media is active. Been doing a bit on SEN as well (sports radio).

Very good question. At the Rebels meet and greet, my question to Baden Stephenson was almost exactly that. I don’t know why the Rebels are simply content to preach to the converted; namely, those who basically either have a membership or who are inside the rugby community.

Where are the ads on Vic/Melb TV? Where are the ads in the papers? Why aren’t we encouraging the AFL folk to come check us out when their AFL team isn’t playing in Melbourne? Just get a handful of AFL people with a bit of curiosity to come over and momentum has begun.

Why, in short, are we not jumping up and down and yelling from the fucking rooftops?

The answer was rather vague, although the new Marketing Manager seems a very passionate and focused lady.

Having said that, Cox pulled almost all money from marketing during his tenure; the VRU and current Rebels management seem to be gearing it all up again. Let’s see.

Are you trying to say "no, you are wrong"?

Western Sydney means a lot of things, but I stretched it to the most south-south-south-western limit: Campbletown. Right or wrong a quick google gives 2hr 25min to Canberra and 50mins to Paddington.

They've been up for 3-4 years now.

To account for Sydney traffic you'll probably want to use the walking option on google maps...........

But to be fair......... I have actually driven Canberra to west Sydney quicker than what it's taken to travel from central/north Sydney to the west.

Before anyone says something about needing a major sponsor, I agree this is something we desperately need, but there are people who’s job that is. The Rebels engaging in other activities doesn’t stop the search for a sponsor. I would hope they can do several things at once.

It’s like when the social media team post various things after the team has had a big loss and the comments are all like “maybe you should concentrate on winning instead of posting photos” like the person who posts on Facebook also runs training drills.

Anyway.

Big thumbs up to the Rebels here. Very little do we see of active building of grassroots connections and pathways. Crack on Rebels.

The Rebels were excellent at grass routes for the year or two before they became a private organisation.

The fact is, if they turn all the people who are rugby union people but support the Storm as their premier professional team, they'd probably have enough fans.

I struggle to believe that.. it must have being absolutely horrendous traffic..
I drive South Sydney - Richmond regularly
