i never expected them to be world beaters, the opening three games had me very pleasantly surprised. what i had hoped for over the last 5 games is some general improvement and elimination of the repetitive mistakes, i've not seen any of that, which is my biggest concern. i think the Rebels probably are one of the top two sides in Australia, which unfortunately isn't saying much at all. i think all the Australian super side will struggle from now to beat an OS team this year and i include the Sunwolves in that.
and that is the biggest disappointment of all, that we are no longer internationally competitive at the elite level

I know Mafi only signed a year extension, but has it been confirmed where he is going after 2018?

I'd imagine he would head to the Sunwolves. WE could have only signed him for 2018, and I think the JRFU are trying to bring all their OS talent back home, in time for RWC 2019. Michael Leitch is one example t hat comes to mind.

There is meant to be a positive announcement soon regarding the ongoing sustainability of the Rebels, but Wessels wouldn’t make that announcement.

No, he wouldn’t. Would be a govt announcement, considering it’s an election year. Haven’t seen any press to indicate that an announcement is forthcoming.
