Bit harsh after 1 year, we won 7/15 so was actually our best year.

Cox took ownership of the Rebels on the back of the best season they had enjoyed to date, with 7 wins (from memory) and being the first Aussie team to defeat a NZ side in NZ (Rebels v Crusaders) and he talked big about how he was going to make the Rebels one of the top twenty five clubs in the world, but I have to be honest, he has down jack till now - no major sponsors, no advertising, game attendance down and woeful half time entertainment. He has not walked the talk. Now at the 11th hour he calls for supporters - we've been here all along, his job was to build the club and in two years, (ok 21 months) what has he done?

Correlation does not imply causation.

I doubt he made the Rebels worse, just not better. It's a tough gig.

we peaked too early you think?
I dont think he has peaked, last year aus teams won 3 out of 25 against nz sides. So a 0-3 start to the season is no surpris. Could still go quite well through from now till june.

Exactly, people are pretending we didn't predict going 0-3 to start.

It's more the margins of the losses.

I have found the major sponsor thing interesting. Whilst I'm sure Imperium would prefer to have one, it is really only a function of pricing. Stick Fuso on the front of the jersey and no one sees a problem. It's one of those things we'll never know, but what do we bring through our platinum sponsors compared to say Force's which include a front of jersey deal. It's really about how much you bring through the door in total.

Stoff i agree. if 4,5,6 middle ranking sponsors chip in sufficient $ then a single naming rights sponsor isnt strictly necessary.

Very, very interesting article in the Australian today

Has actually got my hopes up a little bit more.

In short the Victorian gov't has proposed a Rugby Excellence Centre which would be run with one of the major Universities, providing scholarships to people from around Australia and the world to be apart of the program. They are also in advanced talks over Bledisloe test matches in the next 10 years and talking about various other rugby related projects, all equals big $ for the ARU. All have been told will be scrapped if the ARU gets rid of the Rebels. Nice to see that the gov't is starting to get involved.

Did Coxy just have words with them "hey, just say you're gonna build a Rugby Excellence Centre if you leave the Rebels alone" "but we aren't going to build one" "yes, but the ARU don't know that".

Who knows, we all know politicians can talk, but on saying that i'd rather them in our corner atm than not having them at all. It just adds a little bit more weight to the cause.

the rugby centre at MU has been mooted for a while. the Universities are all very keen to get the march on their rivals with the new olympic sport "7's". a globally recognised centre will offer both academic and sporting opportunities, just as American Unis do with swimming and athletics, basketball etc.
