I was watching the Cheetahs v Highlanders game at the weekend, before the Rebels came along I liked how both teams played rugby and generally liked seeing them do well. I reckon I would probably support the Highlanders if the Rebels went, my interest in Australian rugby has never really widened from the Rebels.
I can't bring myself to support the Wallabies (or any Australian sporting team) due to the amount of pain they all inflicted on me growing up.

Hopefully we don't get the chop, I would really like to see the Rebels stick around, as you can definitely see the skeleton of an exciting and promising rugby team forming. We just need to get the right game plan and coaches to suit the talent we have got. Unfortunately at the moment I don't think we have that quite right, but here's hoping we are around next year with a better coach and a better gameplan.

I was thinking the other day about how much I miss the Damien Hill coached Rebels. Sure we lost a lot of games, but at least they were entertaining. Instead of now where we lose even more games and they are boring affairs.
Damian Hill went more due to JOC (James O'Connor) and Beale than his results, though he did get 5 wins in 2013, up from the previous year.

it was reported at the start of this debacle that cox wanted 4.75 to go away. However it dragged on, cost him in damages and he has since said he won't sell if the team gets folded. However, with the massive financial guarantees of the WA government, including compensation for the Victorian govt. withdrawal of funds dedicated to hosting a Bledisloe, in addition to the consortium of millionaire rugby guys who want to help the force on top of the several million raised by the own the force campaign to buy back what they sold to the aru...sadly it seems that the rebels have moved to the top of the shitkick list.

- Never once has it been confirmed he had a price. The only thing on record is that he will not sell if it meant the franchise would get wound up.

- Financial guarantees from the WA government (fantastic). Fair enough, but the Vic government is offering the same. Plus then there's the reported rugby centre of excellence. And this might seem like a shit kick to Perth, but the attraction of a Lions/Bledisloe test in Perth is not even in the same league as Melbourne, it's kinda like the American equivilent of hosting a major sporting event in Chicago to San Diego (Perth is a beautiful place btw and i am looking forward to heading there for the test later this year).

- Consortium of millionaire rugby guys wanting to put money into the Force (brilliant), but doesn't the Rebels already have a rich millionaire wanting to pump money into the game????????????

- Own the Force (once again brilliant idea) to buy back the IP, the Rebels already own their IP

Piss any of the governments off and good luck wanting support going forward for a World Cup, etc. Infact one of World Rugby's stipulations for hosting a WC is to have a stadium within 1 hour of 75% of your population. That's going to be pretty hard to get when what is projected to be your largest city won't support/play ball with you.

Always thought Hill was a little hard done by, between the awful (in retrospect only) recruitment for 2011, plus the Beale/O'Connor/Cipriani shit on top of it being his first time as a Pro Coach.

I'm not saying I wanted to keep him on or anything, just a lot of issues were comparatively not in his control, when you compare him to others.

Well, maybe it was lack of results, but I also think the feeling was he had no control over the team. I still blame JOC (James O'Connor) and Beale.
From my understanding his death knell was the South African debacle when after losing to the Sharks by a very big margin he allowed the team to go out on the piss and what ended up was Beale getting into a punch up with Delve and Vuna .
He certainly was a very good attacking coach IMO. The Rebels played some really attractive Rugby in those early years and scored some awesome try's . Unfortunately they couldn't stop the opposition from scoring more of them

I was happy for Hilly his last game was that spectacular comeback game against the Highlanders.

Oh how I would love to see some attack like that,

Imagine being the boys who were given the freedom to attack like that, now having to watch as the ball is kicked away every time you have it. It's bad enough in the stands, let alone going give me the ball on the field.

If Cox has a price, it's got to be closer to the 10 million mark. The ARU have caused the damage and admitted to sell a dud. Whether they like it or not they doubled the price with a few small comments and have backed themselves into a massive corner.

Can anyone confirm if Collingwood was seriously interested in running the Melbourne NRC side a few years ago?

Don't let real facts get in the way of an emphatically made point though. ;)

I can confirm it was complete horseshit.

In 20years when we are projected to become the largest state, it will look even silly

Way off topic R3, but Melbourne has been reported quite regularly over the past 40 years as being on the brink of overtaking Sydney as the country's largest city. That forecast has often been based simply on a projected higher % growth rate. But to actually eat into the current excess size of Sydney over Melbourne requires the annual actual growth to outstrip Sydney's. Are you aware if the growth in Melbourne/Victoria is in raw figures greater than Sydney/NSW, or only the % growth? If so, how long has it been happening, and for how long is it forecast to continue?

In pure number the population growth of Melbourne in 2015/16 was 123,100 compared to Sydney 105.600 according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. So actual and percentage growth are greater than Sydneys.

Significantly larger raw number of people growth. In the 2006 census, the Sydney Urban Centre was about 270,000 higher in population than Melbourne. In the 2011 Census, the gap had closed to 201,000. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia_by_population)

Similar numbers in 2016 with Melbourne growing by 95,600 residents and Sydney 84,200 (http://www.smh.com.au/federal-polit...s-as-locals-leave-sydney-20160324-gnqfd2.html)

A more recent article claims about 500 people per week are upgrading their residential status and moving from Sydney to Melbourne. All potential Rebels fans :)

ARU owns the Melbourne Rebels I.P. I know its a roar article but the Australian articles are paywalled. And http://owntheforce.com.au is to buy back the license aswell as the I.P. rights.

This gives me some optimism. The fact the Vic government are involved in negotiations, rather than just photo ops, gives me some confidence.

alks continued behind the scenes on Tuesday, with parties including Rebels owner Andrew Cox, the Australian Rugby Union, the Victorian Government and Rugby Union Players Association (RUPA) all involved on some level
