Canes (h), Cheetahs (h), Blues (a), Brumbies (h), Chiefs (a), Force (h), Stormers (h), Saders (a), Reds (a).

Reds, Cheetahs, Force and Blues are must wins. We don't deserve to play playoffs otherwise.

We then need at least 2 wins, likely 3 if one of them is the Stormers from the remaining 5.

To me, that means we want a 3-0 record between byes for insurance, 2-1 is ok, but 1-2 or 0-3 leaves us playing catch up for the rest of the Season, against a tough set of teams.

Bye This week

Canes, Cheetahs, Blues

Bye

Brumbies, Chiefs, Force

International Break

Stormers, Saders , Reds

I don't think we can afford to drop another home game if we are going to be any chance of finals. Agree about needing a win over the Blues on the road, and really think one of the Chiefs and Saders games is going to be a must.

lets not get too far ahead of ourselves. in reality we have beaten a pretty mediocre Tahs team (I'm happy about that) and got shown up against a classy Highlanders and lost to an average Bulls team on the road. Hopefully we will continue to win against teams at home and away, canes a big game, if they win this then they are genuine finals contenders. on current form we are unlikely to beat either the Chiefs or Crusaders, but in a two horse race ! Brumbies and Reds are no gimme either. But so far so good, as all have said 4 & 2 at this stage is as good as any other australian team

Everyone keeps saying "yeah, but we have only beaten crap teams". Doesn't that just mean we are better than a lot of teams?

that may well be true, but the sample size is too small to tell. agreed you can only beat what you play, however, if we had beaten teams that were winning against other opposition then the argument is stronger. but, we have beaten the Force (o wins), the Reds (o wins), the Tahs (beaten Reds twice) Sunwolves (o wins) and lost to the Bulls (3/1/1). after the next three games there will be a more realistic appraisal.

At the moment it looks like it means what it means, we're a mid table team. Beaten the bad teams we've come up against, but been smoked by the good ones.

4-2 gives a great platform to launch from, but without serious improvement across the park the finals are a long way off.

Out of interest, how many wins do you guys think we'll need to make finals?
Because of the new finals system it's hard to say. Last year the Brumbies finished in 6th spot with 9 wins and 11 bonus points.

If you look at the ladder as it stands, we're in the last wild card position but the 'Canes have a game in hand. They'll knock us out with a win next week, courtesy of 2 more bonus points and better points difference.

We will need to win at least one more game than either the 'Canes or the Brums or start racking up bonus points. So even with six more wins we could still miss out.

Decent chance there will be one Aussie and four Kiwi sides in the finals.

yes realistically i can only see one australian side in the finals, the conference winner, the only hope is that the NZ sides cannibalise one another, or the Blues come good at the end knocking off their compatriots to narrowly fall short of a finals berth.

My feeling is that we'll need 11 wins either way to get through to the playoffs. That would either see us pip the Brumbies for Top spot, or take sufficient points off the Kiwi sides to pinch a wildcard spot, given we're still to play all of them but the Chiefs.

Reassessment is needed after the bye, but a positive win loss record of any sort will be a good season IMO.

agreed. They are not fit enough to last a whole game - this happens every year and as the season progresses they get less fit

? I was having a tongue in cheek shot at DB, not making any criticism of Hooper. To me, Michael is the closest to the perpetual energy bunny and I wouldn't be criticising his fitness levels.

apologies, I had the wrong quote - I was referring to the Rebels tired second half
Michael Hooper was the Tahs star last week

Does anyone here know some of the blokes playing in the Rebels U20s?

Our fullback was electric. Fairly small bloke, but was a clear standout in a well-beaten team.

Would love to get a replay of that match. Might sniff on YouTube for it.

Think a lot of the guys playing Rebel U20's were ex Storm Juniors. After the Storm moved their junior program to the Central Coast, a lot of the guys stuck around in Melbourne and gravitated to Union. Good signs for us.
