Grealy signed with the Force and Vunivalu appears on the outer. Despite my post above there have been regular reports Petaia won’t at the Reds next year. That would leave us only Daugunu, Campbell and Ryan as specialist back three players. Anderson gives us depth with Super Rugby experience. Might prove only to be a place holder but seems a good signing in terms of squad depth.

Based on today’s club game, don’t think the Reds will be signing Mason Gordon either.

That's a raw deal, Tim Ryan deservedly received plenty of accolades this year but Grealy was a very safe and consistent presence on the other wing.

Bit of a log jam out wide now - can see why the kid would move on. If Petaia doesn't leave I think he's pretty clearly not in the 23.

Well, if we look at stats alone, you can clearly see how skewed it is.

He's effectively played half a game of rugby across those 29 matches. On the wing.

How many tries are you expecting him to have scored?

I am not fully disagreeing with the overall point you're trying to make, just the metric you're using.

Mac has not kicked on like we would have hoped, but he's still young in his career. But, in any event, what backs in the Reds (outside of Hunter and Flook) have consistently played at the next level?

Junkyard Dog may suffer the dreaded second year like we constantly see as well.

half a game per match. He should have 5+ tries easily.

Grealy couldn't have done more to earn a spot. Coaches might eat with their eyes at times and not the guy who really seemed like a glue guy for them. He was always there in cover and chasing everything moving. Attitude setter IMO and I thought he was too undersized and not really offering much at the top level prior to this season.

Ryan won't get the same space he did next year and he'll be targeted in D to see what he has and gas him. I can see the opportunity to rotate outside backs and develop them but in the forwards you want the same guys week in week out. Only injury should cause changes here. When it gets tight in finals you want guys who know exactly who's next to them. You want into the side, earn it. Depth should be developed through competition not rotation.

In 2016 Marcel Brache scored his first try for Western Force after 32 games, he played the majority on the wing (some at 13).

In any case, Grealey is a good young player who's contributed well to the Reds without the reward of tries. Hopefully he'll play at 15 for the Force, which is his natural position.

I thought Grealy was developing nicely and kicked along this year. To the point where he would be looking for a pay rise at the same time as Daugunu and Anderson being on the table with Daugunu re-establishing himself as a test player, and Tim Ryan also playing the house down.

I imagine that the Reds would’ve loved to have kept him but not at a price that Grealy was happy to stay. If it is true he is heading to the Force (pretty sure Sully posted it and he doesn’t seem one for unfounded gossip) then I wish him the very best and hope he kills it.

With regards to Tim Ryan and comments around his defence - I think he’ll inevitably get bumped off occasionally but, from what little I’ve seen he has very got defensive technique and decision making.

While scoring tries is very important for a winger, I wonder whether the team scores more while he is on the field compared to letting in points. It is a team game and if he is in a position to take the last pass to score he is equally in a position to put the defence in two minds on who to cover potentially leading to the player inside scoring.

Vunivalu has 80 points from 39 games according to Wikipedia.

I assume those who are don't think Grealy deserves a spot due to lack of tries will be wanting Vunivalu on one wing?
