Queensland Reds 2025

It's probably just because I've become accustomed to the freely streamed (or incl. in my Stan membership) trial games in the past, but $15 feels... steep.

This tour has certainly given me a new appreciation for how most trial games are handled over this side of the world.
You are right that it is pretty ridiculous but a small correction on Stan, we do not get the games included. We do have to pay for an extra sport package which, unless you like tennis, is essentially $15 a month just for Rugby. That means we are paying about $4 a game for our own teams but much less if you enjoy watching other teams in addition to that.

Sorry, I meant included in the Stan Sport membership - this is of course technically paying for the trials, but I view it as a sunk cost given I'm paying for it anyway.

Worth noting too that recently many of the trials - particularly internationals (Tonga, Japan) have been freely streamed on Youtube/Facebook

Personally, I think Stan have done a tremendous job with the Rugby. I don't watch any of the other sports that they do but the extra $15 per month is worth every penny.

If you compare it to the toxic Fox sports commentary of the previous ten years that they had the rights its night and day.

My only wish is that they had the Japan league as there are so many Aussies and Kiwis plying their trade up there.

I have seen the future, and it's every sports team in the world running their own streaming channel and trying to fleece $15 from me for every game

Like the game pass in NFL, and isn't their something similar in English football? I'd be happy to chase a Reds game pass if it was handled half way effectively.

Reds game pass*.

*Only valid for games at Suncorp.

You'll need a Tahs gamepass for Tahs v Reds in Sydney, and a "Reds premium" game pass for finals.

is essentially $15 a month just for Rugby.
Plus every Wallabies game, Autumn Series, Rugby Championship, 6 Nations, the Premiership, 7's, NZ NPC, Shute Shield, QPR, Currie Cup, the U20's.

There is so much rugby content for you to watch.

Not to mention they have the entire UEFA competitions; Champions League, Europa and Conference.

You could literally have four screens concurrently running 24x7 and you wouldn't be able to finish everything that aired in one week.

Plus the tennis and a heap of motor racing. Stan (and Stan Sport) probably gets the most watch time of all my subscriptions

All true. I do think it is a good product for Rugby lovers but just wanted to clarify the cost at the basic one game a week level that many fans would consume.

Does anyone know where to get prior season Reds merch (game day, supporter or training) at a cheaper price than the Reds store? I miss the days of the ISC popup shops outside Ballymore where you get essentially get an entire year worth of rugby training gear for $100 and get change back.

It's farking $150 for the new Reds jersey, $80 for the babies kit?? $150 if you want the matching Pasifika training shirt and shorts. Insanity.

$150 for the baby blue or canary yellow new training jerseys - what...

I know we are back to Canterbury but I'm guessing it's all just designed in NZ and made overseas now.

Yeah as @Wilson says, the best way is to watch out for sales on Canterbury's website (maybe even in store?) - usually of last season's gear.

Pretty sure I picked up the 2018 maroon jersey in early '19 for like $40, which worked out great seeing they switch back to maroon full time that year

Thanks mate - I will keep an eye on this stuff. Must have to get in early to grab some good sizes. I don't think I'll fit into an XS anytime in the next decade and the 3XLs might be a tad large!

Yeah, your best bet is generally just after the season finishes. I think the reality with a lot of this stuff is that they've gotten a lot better at understanding demand and just-in-time production, so there just isn't as much leftover merch to go on sale.

Wouldn't, it'd be back to illegal steaming or replays on YouTube....

Sorry I'm not quite following. At any rate illegal streaming and Youtube replays isn't really "half way effective".

On the whole I've been happy with Stan, just missing these European trials.

I think you'd be surprised how many homes these days are operating some type of paid black market streaming service via an Amazon fire stick or similar. Most weekend markets these days have at least one stall which is selling a pre-setup device, there are a few more steps involved then depending which service you want to run but it's not hard.

If you are willing to pay about $100 a year, you'll be able to get a service that has every live sport across the world ready to stream on demand - essentially KAYO, Stan Sports, NBA League Pass etc. all rolled into one. Depending on the provider some even have the pay per view events like UFC included.

Ironically, in my circles it is actually the older generations who have decided to use them. Not for cost reasons, but because they were sick of navigating across 10 different services and wanted a Foxtel like experience again.

including smaller services like Stan Sport too?
