Queensland Reds 2025

Completely. I'm really hopeful for Nonggorr.

Along with De Lutiis I've got my eye on George Blake who at least has some exposure to pro rugby. He'll likely be 4th in line this year, but IO can't imagine that all three in front of him will continue to 2026.

I think it's important to continue the development pathways at the same time that some form of consolidation is required with the ex-Rebel in-take.

I think Trevor King is another to keep an eye on.
Blake seems to be seen as a backup prop\hooker hybrid the past couple of seasons.

Re: Nonggorr possibly moving to LHP.

It wasn’t that long ago that Sio & Slipper shared the Brumbies gig and it seemed to me they were pretty happy with the arrangement. I know Sio eventually left but I always got the impression that had more to do with him dropping out of the Wallabies squad and so losing some market value. Maybe those inside the Brumbies camp have a bit more insight.

I feel like props are a bit happier to share time than most of the others. Ideally you want quality on the bench to be able to make the swap between 40 & 50 minutes in.

I’m hoping the weight of expectation on this team doesn’t bog them down, because on paper there are so many positives.

- current Wallabies captain in the side alongside an established leadership team
- McReight arguably the most influential individual forward in Australian rugby at the moment
- Tim Ryan next evolution should hopefully be a try scoring machine with some more polish
- Larger squad with more depth and some key players in that depth chart
- Kiss is likely auditioning for a Wallabies coaching gig

I wonder if a slightly smaller touring squad would be viable and then have the country game?

If Nonggorr comes along like we hope will one have to switch to LHP so they both get big minutes?
Not sure you have to be too worried about it. Sharing minutes can be a huge benefit to sides. Have fresh elite Props changes games. Look at the Boks.

To go along with injury and the flexibility it gives the squad rest wise I think you let players be the best version of themselves over making them fit somewhere else in the idea of more talent on the field.

The larger squad is going to pay out I think. Those small margin games can be swung by the ability of a side to bring in a genuine starter when someone goes down over a the lesser player.

Love watching Ryan and keen to see how teams target him now. He is a known quantity and likely to be tested. Speed is an undeniable though and always hard to contain.

Standard coaching line up there with "taking it one week at a time" "Only worried about us" "really good pre season"

The tour matches are great for this though. Reds will have a chance to keep figuring some things out through the start of the year. Purely going off 2024 form you can see possibility of the Reds being 6-0 land going to Waikato. Do have the Saders and Highlanders in NZ before that which is tough but doable.

I'll say 5-1 leading into 4 tough ones in a row.

We leave any pre-season championship chat to NSW thanks

The Reds are continuing with the Pasifika warmup gear this season. Looks good, an improvement on last season's imo. Looks a bit like a Chiefs jersey though

I would prefer HMP too, I would also like to see Werchon get significant game time.

My hottest take of the season is we won't see much Werchon and he will move overseas when his current Reds deal is up.

Lots of ability but doesn't seem to have a great headspace under pressure and the feedback from both his clubs is very similar.

There is a fair bit of Nick Frisby about him on and off the field.

That's a shame he looks real good.

Don't think it's a hot take tbh - make or break season for him.

Frisby couldn’t pass mate. Bit of a difference between the 2

He's a relatively young guy, last year especially the QPR final would have done him a world of good for why hot headiness is costly.

Horwill was similar until roughly the same age and then he mellowed out.

Stupid thing was he reacted to getting a cheapie and got a card. Cartwright was being a complete flog in the GF.

Not a great deal of experience at 10 for the Reds with both Lynagh and HMP…yes Lynagh has been capped by the Wallabies but injury prone and HMP may indeed be good in the future but I’m yet to see that so far. I hope they both play well and prove me wrong. Losing both JOC (James O'Connor) and Creighton is a loss of experience in a crucial position.

There were plenty who thought JOC (James O'Connor)'s experience was insufficient and that his strength was 12. Personally I'd prefer he was still here, but I doubt we will look back in 12 months and be thinking "well, what would have been if JOC (James O'Connor) had been backing up 10".

Creighton (Wiki) is listed with 34 Red caps to Lynagh's 22 - noting Lynagh is pretty much all focussed at 10, whereas Creighton is flyhalf, centre, wing, FB. Did he have any more experience than Tom at flyhalf? Also Lynagh's introduction into pro-rugby has been one of the most considered and progressive I have seen recently.

Reds have young 10s to be sure, and like I suspect all Aus Super clubs the depth of experience and ability is possibly "under development". All the same I am happy with how we are sitting as we line up the 2025 season.
