The BJRU held their Grand Finals for u13 to u17 at Churchie yesterday.
I have heard there was some controversy in the u14 Div 1 game (Brothers v Sunnybank). Now not sure of full or exact details, but the chinese whispers I heard were:-
1. Brothers had just taken the lead towards the end of the game
2. Brothers received a penalty and it seemed all they had to do was kick it out and that was the end of the match.
3. They kicked it out and the ref blew full time whistle and the Brothers' boys celebrated.
4. The AR comes on and has a word to the ref.
5. A Brothers' player is given a Red Card for swearing.
6. Sunnybank are then awarded a penalty (so game seems not to have finished as first thought) in the attacking 22.
7. Sunnybank take a quick tap and score a try (may be some controversy there as well as a neutral person close to the scene said the ball placement was well short of the line) to take the lead, game and premiership.
8. Other spectating refs came on to the field straight away to surround (and protect) the game ref from any rubbish - but I heard that there only name calling and no pushing or shoving.
9. The Brothers' players distraught and the Sunnybank players over the moon.
10. Talk that the Ref and AR were aligned (ie either members, players or past players or received Ref/AR accreditation) with Sunnybank.
The only fact I am certain of is that Sunnybank won and that the game was won in the last second of the match. Can anyone else who was there or with a very reliable source shed any more light?
Unfortunately, in previous years I have witnessed refs aligned with Sunnybank officiate Grand Finals in the BJRU comp when Sunnybank teams are involved. I am not saying that there is any bias. It is just the perception that carries so much weight. If point 10 is correct, then those appointing or ratifying the appointments must do a better job to ensure that the Ref's/AR's integrity cannot be questioned. ie appoint neutral refs not aligned in any way to either club playing in the GF.
